Joe Public cruise pass New England.
By: Flex Mohammed.

Six place T&T Pro League team Joe Public FC put up a brilliant display at the Gillette Stadium on Tuesday night to come away 4-0 winners over MLS Eastern second place team New England Revolution in the CONCACAF Championship Cup. Leading the series 2-1 and only needing a tie for the least to take them through to the next rounds. Joe Public came out firing on all cylinders from the kick off that would leave the host team shell-shocked. The Trinidad and Tobago side a 6:1 aggregate victory send it to Group C along with Mexico’s Atlante FC, CD Olimpia of Honduras and Impact de Montreal of Canada.

Guyanese striker Gregory Richardson was the most impressive player off the night netting a hat-trick for the Eastern Lions and Jamaican striker Reon Nelson also getting on the score sheet that would help finish off the New England side and create history in the process as no other T&T club has ever beaten an American side at home in such competition and, in such manner. The Revolution finished with 10 men after defender Jay Heaps drew a second yellow card in the 90th minute for a rash tackle from behind on Wolry Wolfe. Joe Public will now look to it's next opponent in its Group C schedule away September (17) against Canada's Montreal Impact.

Joe Public FC (4-4-2): - 1-Alejandro Figueroa (GK), 13-Jason Springer (10-Lyndon Andrews 85th), 23-Keyeno Thomas, 20-Christopher Harvey, 19-Carlyle Mitchell, 11-Wolry Wolfe, 8-Dale Saunders ©, 9-Arnold Dwarika, 17-Kerry Baptiste, 14-Reon Nelson (31-Jamal Gay 76th), 21-Gregory Richardson.

Joe Public advances to the CONCACAF Champions League group stage with a 6-1 aggregate victory

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Gregory Richardson scored three goals and helped set up another, as Trinidad’s Joe Public FC defeated the New England Revolution, 4-0, in the second leg of a CONCACAF Champions League preliminary-round series on Tuesday night at Gillette Stadium. With the result, Joe Public won the two-game series, 6-1 on aggregate, and advanced to the tournament’s group stage.

Joe Public will be part of Group C in the CONCACAF Champions League, joining Mexican side Atlante, Honduran club Olimpia, and the winner of the series between the Montreal Impact (Canada) and Real Esteli (Nicaragua), which Montreal led, 1-0, after the first leg. New England’s participation in the tournament was ended with the loss.

Richardson scored his first in the 17th minute to give Joe Public a 1-0 lead in the match and a 3-1 advantage on aggregate. Wolry Wolfe’s long pass from midfield split the Revolution backline and put Richardson one-on-one with Revs goalkeeper Matt Reis, and Richardson finished to the far post from the left side of the box.

New England’s best chance of the first half – and ultimately, the match – fell to Shalrie Joseph in the 36th minute, but his close-range shot from a tight angle flew across the face of goal and past the far post.

Richardson extended the visitors’ lead to 2-0 on the night and 4-1 on aggregate just before halftime, bursting past a defender and firing a shot into the roof of the net from a very tight angle.

Less than three minutes into the second half, the Eastern Lions scored again, this time with Richardson providing the pass for Roen Nelson’s goal. Richardson played a low pass to the top of the area for Nelson, who side-footed a shot from 18 yards inside the left post.

The scoring was completed in the 81st minute when Richardson scored his third goal of the game and his fourth of the two-game series. Richardson took a short pass from Silas Spann outside the box before driving a shot inside the far post.

New England will return to MLS regular-season action on Saturday, Sept. 6, when the club travels to Ohio for a crucial Eastern Conference showdown with the Columbus Crew at 7:30 p.m. at Crew Stadium.

Public statement

Success, according to some sociologists, has more to do with how one feels he is perceived by others rather than an inventory of his own achievements. By such a benchmark, it can be argued that Bmobile Joe Public chairman Jack Warner may feel more satisfaction in Tuesday's 4-0 CONCACAF Champions League win over United States Major League Soccer (MLS) team, New England Revolution, than Public's maiden Pro League title in 2006.

It must have been nice to outdo his local rivals, two years ago, but how much sweeter to humiliate MLS powerhouses like Revolution-they were MLS Cup finalists for the last three successive seasons-in their backyard. The Trinidad and Tobago football community and, in particular, the other nine Pro League outfits, should share his joy.

Thirteen years have passed since Joe Public opened their doors and declared their intention to become the Caribbean's premier team and a force in CONCACAF. In that time, Warner handed the daily management of the club to elder son, Daryan, before his second son and present boss, Darryl, took the reins.

The local public's reaction to news from their Macoya headquarters was mixed at best.

There were sniggers all around, in 1998, when the "Eastern Lions" were drawn against MLS outfit, DC United, in a CONCACAF fixture and ended on the wrong side of an embarrassing 8-0 rout in Washington.

"After the first two," then Public coach and present director Keith Look Loy told the Washington Post, "it's hard to remember (anything else)."

Warner, who promised victory beforehand, strode into the dressing room after the loss and threatened to immediately dismiss the entire squad, which included present players like Arnold Dwarika and Lyndon Andrews.

In retrospect, Trinidad and Tobago's domestic league-Public represented the Semi Professional Football league (SPFL) at the time-was still underdeveloped and unprepared for such a contest. Ten years prior, Defence Force won the CONCACAF tournament outright while the army/coast guard combination and Police continued to have strong showings into the early 1990s.

But the steady exodus of local talent to Europe and the spread of talent as young players began to snub Police and Defence Force for salaried jobs elsewhere in the SPFL meant that domestic football was in a state of flux.

Defence Force, Clico San Juan Jabloteh and W. Connection sounded a warning to the confederation's top leagues with first leg triumphs in this millennium before stumbling on foreign soil.

Public might have lost their chance too as a series of wasted opportunities led to a slender 2-1 first leg win at Macoya last Tuesday. Barbadian coach Keith Griffith, barely a month into his first stint in Trinidad, casually promised an away win.

The fact that Griffith was good as his word is only half the story. The expressive, proactive approach of the Public team in Boston was a sight to behold-despite the obvious limitations in observing the proceedings by television.

Public were fearless and set the pace from the kick-off. Griffith started with two conventional strikers and as many wingers with an ageing playmaker, Dwarika, to boot. Dwarika, who was superb in the first leg, again outshone Revolution's much vaunted Grenadian star Shalrie Joseph in the midfield and Public prospered as a result.

If Dutchman Ruud Gullit coined the phrase "sexy football" during his coaching stint at Chelsea, perhaps Griffith should get copyright for "happy football".

Of course, one drizzle does not make the rainy season. Public are sixth in the league at present and Griffith's two domestic outings so far ended with a triumph against a fading United Petrotrin and a loss to second from bottom Defence Force.

There is much to be done before he can consider himself the equal of Connection's Stuart Charles-Fevrier or Jabloteh's Terry Fenwick, while the work of Rangers' Anthony Streete, Economy North East Stars' Clint Marcelle, Petrotrin's Brian Williams and the Neal & Massy Caledonia AIA duo of Jamal Shabazz and Jerry Moe also raised eyebrows this year.

Griffith will not have the element of surprise either when Public face Mexican side Atlante, Honduran club Olimpia and Canada's Montreal Impact in the group stage.

But, for now, it is best to focus on the joy of the present. And to applaud the mercurial Guyanese striker Gregory "Jackie Chan" Richardson, whose hat-trick kicked Revolution into orbit, and the precise delivery of Kerry Baptiste, trickery of Dwarika, leadership of Dale Saunders, cheeky innovation of Silas Spann, spunk of Wolry Wolfe, Jamal Gay and Jason "Froggy" Springer and calm authority of Keyeno Thomas and Alejandro Figueroa. It was a resounding "Public" statement.

Richardson scores three, sends Joe Public to Group Stage with 4:0 win over Revolution

9/2/2008 - Gregory Richardson scored three goals, two in the first half, and Joe Public FC beat the New England Revolution 4:0 Tuesday night to become the first team to advance from the Preliminary Round of the CONCACAF Champions League ™.

Richardson scored in the 17th, 45th and 81st minutes – and set up another by Roen Nelson early in the second half, giving the Trinidad and Tobago side a 6:1 aggregate victory to send it to Group C along with Mexico’s Atlante FC, CD Olimpia of Honduras and either Real Esteli of Nicaragua or Canada’s Impact de Montreal.

Joe Public had the early advantage in possession, but Richardson’s first goal came after a giveaway by the Revolution backs. Richardson, who scored the first goal in the Eastern Lions' 2:1 home victory a week ago, ran onto a ball from Wolry Wolfe out of midfield and split defenders Amaeche Igwe and Gabriel Badilla before driving a right-footed shot over the left shoulder of goalkeeper Matt Reis.

The Revolution appeared to be gaining more control as the first half wore on, with Shalrie Joseph getting behind the Joe Public defense in the 36th and driving a ball across the goal box from near the byline.

Khano Smith also had a dangerous cross cleared in the 42nd before an individual effort by Richardson virtually ended New England’s hopes.

Richardson took a ball on the right and beat Badilla to the byline before blasting a shot that beat Reis to the near post from the edge of the 6-yard box.

The Revolution started with the early possession in the second half. But Richardson broke free down the right side in the 48th minute, cut the ball back and sent it to the top of the area where Nelson struck it on the run. Reis was able to dive low and get his right hand to slow the shot, but not stop it from trickling over the line.

Richardson added his finale from just outside the 18, driving a bouncing, left-footed shot unmarked into the far-side netting.

The Revolution were forced to use a makeshift lineup due to several injured regulars, including midfielder Steve Ralston and forward Taylor Twellman, who received five stitches from a collision with Los Angeles Galaxy goalkeeper Steve Cronin in Saturday’s 2:2 league draw.

Twellman was the last of four strikers to go down injured for New England, resulting in Smith being used as a forward along with 18-year-old Brandon Manzonelli, who made only his second start as a professional.

The Revolution finished with 10 men after defender Jay Heaps drew a second yellow card in the 90th minute for a rash tackle from behind.

Joe Public will begin its Group C schedule away 17 September against either Real Esteli or Impact de Montreal.

Trinidad’s Joe Public FC defeated the New England Revolution, 4-0

...I still having a hard time wrapping my mind around that scoreline.  What an impressive and definitive statement by Joe Public.  If only the national team could play with the confidence these fellas displayed last night.  Men were not intimidated by the environment, and were composed and determined on the ball.  There was not timid or tentative play and the quality (save for 'Dwareeka' and his errant passes) was really refreshing to behold... nice touches for the most part.

Richardson's firs and final goals in particular... stood out not only for the quality of the finishing, but also because of the quality of the passes that set them up.

Saw the game.  Joe Public was impressive. Their organization was superb.

What impressed me with this Richardson kid is that not only is he speedy and skillful and could score but the man could play as a bonafied out and out striker.  If allyuh see how the man taking control of the ball with his back to the goal for a "small man" in stature.  I was very very impressed.

If people watch the tape, it is a classic way to defend.  Look at the defensive and midfield lines.  Every time NE win the ball, JP was defending with 9 men, I was again very impressed.  That coach know what the heck he doing.  Kudos to JP.

Arimian to meh heart

On another note can we offer Gregory Richardson T&T citizenship?

Ah mean to say, he living in T&T & practically learning to play all his top level ball with us, so why not?
All the big football superpowers does do it!

Has Gregory Richardson played senior ball for Guyana yet or is he pass the FIFA age-limited to change countries?!

Most of all, is he interested in playing for T&T and as a consequence playing at the next World Cup in SA2010?!

I'm sure Jack can pull some strings even if Richardson pass the age!!  ;)

Cornell Glenn scored a first-half hat trick Wednesday as CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh of Trinidad shocked the Chicago Fire of the United States 5-2 in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinals.

Kerry Noray added two more goals for the Caribbean champions while Justin Mapp scored for the Fire. Jabloteh defender Ancil Elcock gave Chicago its first goal in the 40th minute with an own-goal.

The U.S. Open Cup champions will get a chance for revenge next Wednesday when it hosts Jabloteh in the second leg. The winner will face either Deportivo Saprissa of Costa Rica or Pachuca of Mexico in the semifinals.

The hosts dominated the first half at Hasely Crawford Stadium as Glenn scored his first goal in the eighth minute by beating a pair of Fire defenders inside the area and then sending a well-placed shot past goalkeeper Henry Ring.

Glenn added a second in the 12th from close range and made it 3-0 in the 37th when he unleashed a fierce drive that went in off the post.

Elcock gifted the Americans a goal late in the first half when a lack of communication saw him score on his own goal.

Chicago pressured in the second half, but it was Noray that got the goals for Jabloteh.

In the 52nd minute, the striker beat Ring after a nifty back pass from Glenn. The second goal came in the 74th minute as Noray collected a pass from midfielder Trent Noel and beat Ring with a blast.

Substitute Mapp scored what could be a crucial away goal in the 87th as the home team's defense momentarily fell asleep.

Chicago Fire oust SJ Jabloteh
FOOTBALL - Champions Cup

CHICAGO, Illinois (CMC) - Chicago Fire of the USA thumped Trinidad and Tobago's CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh out of the CONCACAF Champions Cup with a 4-0 victory in their second-leg match at Soldier Field on Wednesday night.

Chicago Fire wiped out a three-goal deficit and won the quarter-final tie 6-5 on aggregate through two goals by Botswana's Dipsy Selolwane, and other strikes by Jamaican Damani Ralph and Chris Armas.

"I'm very proud of our team. We had a quiet confidence that we could win this game," Chicago coach, Dave Sarachan, said after the game.

San Juan Jabloteh, the Caribbean Club Champions, had won the first-leg at home 5-2 last Wednesday, but faltered on the Americans' home ground to crash out of the tournament.
Ralph also had an assist and his Jamaican teammate Andy Williams also had an assist in the Fire's victory.

The Fire, focusing on attack, went ahead in the 42nd minute through the Jamaican combination of Ralph and Andy Williams.

Ralph, the 2003 US Major League Soccer (MLS) Rookie of the Year, received a pass on the right flank from Williams and worked past a pair of defenders to find enough space to get off a powerful shot from 20 yards out that nestled under the upper left corner.

It became 2-0 in the 51st minute when Armas held the ball at the top of the penalty area and sent a pass to Selolwane, who struck a blazing shot from 25 yards out that beat goalkeeper, Daurance Williams, and put the Fire down just one goal in the series.

That lead would evaporate 11 minutes later when Ralph darted up the middle of the field and played Selolwane behind the Jabloteh defence.

The Botswana international came through again, easily dribbling around Williams in the right side of the penalty area to put the Fire up 3-0 in the game and levelling the series at 5-5.

The game would open up on both sides for the last half hour as the Fire gathered their legs for one last final push and San Juan Jabloteh showed glimpses of the flair that earned them a convincing win seven days ago.

However, Chicago would once again take over the flow of the match and would gain the series winner in the last minute.

Again Selolwane was at the heart of the play, as his through ball sprang Armas free inside the penalty area for the series winner.

TEAMS:

CHICAGO FIRE - Henry Ring, Evan Whitfield, Jim Curtin, CJ Brown, Andy Williams (Kelly Gray 89th), Chris Armas, Justin Mapp, Logan Pause (Dipsy Selolwane 46th), DaMarcus Beasley, Nate Jaqua, Damani Ralph.

SAN JUAN JABLOTEH - Daurance Williams, Nigel Daniel, Ansil Elcock, Cyd Gray, Ian Gray, Kerry Baptiste (Ronald Primus 40th), Angus Eve (Joseph Peter 66th), Trent Noel, Cornell Glenn, Kerry Noray (Jernon Bailey 55th), Aurtis Whitley.

First things first, the game was advertised as having free gifts for patrons, well this was a first indeed for me, we got a free pack of nuts and a fruta! I was so happy. You could see the effort that goes into the Jabloteh games in organizing and PR. There were stations downstairs selling Jab merchandise, and people were very interested. We even got forms as we entered with the option to buy season tickets for Jab games in the new PFL season coming up, all for just $200 TT. That is remarkable! They also had a part on it where you could pay a $200 to join Jabloteh on a celebratory cruise on the Treasure Queen (pier 1, I think), for an all inclusive party lime. This is a really nice idea.

1) How does that compare to today's prices and what was on in the MLS last week in the first leg?
2) What happened in the second leg and later on in the competition?

Revs on wrong side of history
New England the first U.S. club ever ousted by Caribbean team

http://web.mlsnet.com/news/mls_news.jsp?ymd=20080902&content_id=185082&vkey=news_mls&fext=.jsp

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Revolution made history for all of the wrong reasons on Tuesday night after Joe Public FC dumped them out of the CONCACAF Champions League.

No Caribbean team had ever beat a U.S. team in a CONCACAF club championship matchup. No Caribbean team had ever scored more than three goals against an U.S. team.

After losing 4-0 to Trinidad & Tobago outfit Joe Public at home in the second leg of their series, eliminated 6-1 on aggregate, the Revs entered the record books in all of the wrong ways.

Revolution head coach Steve Nicol blamed his side's lack of strikers and continuing injuries for his team's CONCACAF Champions League demise.

"Being out of the cup, you say we'll concentrate on the league," Nicol said. "I don't know what else to tell you. The last three months, we've played every four days. That's a lot of traveling. That's why you get what you get tonight -- a team that has no juice. We might manage a training session in the next two weeks."

Despite the mitigating circumstances, Revs 'keeper Matt Reis wasn't pleased at how his team went out but said that the better team on the night won.

"You never want to get beat at home," Reis said. "Unfortunately, that happened tonight. The important thing now is to focus on MLS Cup."

Focusing on the game was difficult as Joe Public made things difficult with an early Gregory Richardson goal. Two more Richardson goals, including one before halftime, made the task impossible.

Reis gave credit to Joe Public's ability to keep compact and deny the Revolution space to create in the offensive third.

"They were very organized," Reis said. "We couldn't get behind them very well. Once we went behind for the first goal, it was an uphill battle from there. We made a lot of mental mistakes. That's what happens when you're playing the bottom guys on your roster, the guys who haven't played that much and gotten that many minutes."

Joe Public head coach Keith Griffith said his team tried to stay compact, use its speed to get in behind the Revs defense and minimize Shalrie Joseph's impact.

"What we should have done at Marvin Lee (Stadium), we did tonight," Griffith said, referring to the site of the first leg. "We were very professional and very organized."

The news isn't all bad for the Revs, who will now get to focus on league play for the rest of the season. That gives the team time to get healthy and jockey for playoff position.

Revs midfielder Khano Smith said his team has struggled with the demands placed on it by performing in multiple tournaments this season.

"Teams in Europe have squads of 22 world-class players," Smith said. "We don't."

Shorthanded MLS teams collapse

by Ridge Mahoney, Wednesday, Sep 3, 2008 7:00 AM ET

NEEDING GOALS AND WINS TO advance in the Concacaf Champions League, New England and Chivas USA - both shorthanded because of injuries and other causes - came up short. Way short.

New England, trailing only 2-1 from the first leg, took a 4-0 beating by Joe Public FC at Gillette Stadium. Chivas USA hosted Tauro FC at Home Depot Center down 2-0, and lost Jonathan Bornstein to a second caution in a 1-1 tie that eliminated it on aggregate.

Joe Public FC (Trinidad & Tobago) and Tauro FC (Panama) advance to the 16-team group phase that begins play in two weeks. The elimination of New England and Chivas USA leaves Houston and D.C. United as the MLS entrants in group play.

Mitigating circumstances abounded for the MLS failures, as head coaches Steve Nicol and Preki saved a few regulars for crucial league matches looming on the weekend, yet over two legs, two MLS teams -- including the runner-up in the last three MLS Cups and currently No. 2 team in the overall standings -- were outscored, 9-2, and failed to win any of the four matches.

Nicol had proclaimed that "One-nil puts us through" in reference to the away goal that it scored in Port of Spain, which would have decided the tie if the teams finished 2-2 on aggregate. Yet he left defender Michael Parkhurst on the bench, and with Chris Albright sidelined with a concussion and hip flexor strain suffered in league play, he paired Gabriel Badilla and Amaechi Igwe in central defense. With four attackers injured, Nicol deployed two midfielders up top: Bermudan Khano Smith and Brandon Manzonelli, an 18-year-old on the developmental squad.

Guyanan Gregory Richardson riddled the patchwork back line and a subpar Matt Reis, playing his second game since sitting out three because of an adductor strain, to score three of Joe Public's four goals and set up the other one.

The onslaught began in the 17th minute when Jamaican Wolry Wolfe slipped a through ball that Richardson took past Igwe and Badilla to drill inside the far post. The Joe Public striker effectively decided the series just before halftime when he took a throw-in through Badilla's weak challenge and smashed a shot that caught Reis leaning off his line and beat him high to the near post.

Boos and jeers rained down on the Revs at the end of the half. A few of the more perceptive fans departed, sensing more of the same. Right they were.

Three minutes after the second-half kickoff, Richardson evaded his tacklers and cut a ball that another Jamaican, Roen Nelson, re-directed low to Reis right. The keeper got an outstretched hand to it but could only deflect it inside the post. Joe Public rounded off the rout nine minutes from the end when Silan Spann created a chance for Richardson to nail number three.

The Revs play at Columbus Saturday in a matchup of the league's top two teams.

ERRORS DOOM CHIVAS USA. A penalty kick squandered by Sacha Kljestan and two cautions that jettisoned Bornstein marred an otherwise spirited effort that left Chivas USA eliminated, 3-1, on aggregate.

A few curious decisions by Canadian referee Mauricio Navarro didn't help the Chivas USA cause, as he elected not to send off keeper Willington Dominguez when he clipped the heels of Roberto Nurse on a breakaway. Instead, Navarro cautioned Dominguez, who then blocked Kljestan's weak spot kick to keep the game goalless in the 22nd minute.

Atiba Harris hit the crossbar in the 36th minute to ratchet up the frustration a few notches, and a few minutes later Bornstein received a caution for grabbing Luis Escobar three times as he dribbled up the sideline and then kicking him in the ankle as he fell. In the 42nd minute a looping Bornstein cross from the left flank dropped for Justin Braun to head square into the middle, where Nurse pivoted neatly to tuck a low shot just inside the post.

But six minutes after the restart, Bornstein got caught with his arm wrapped around Leonel Parris and when Parris rolled to the ground easily, Navarro didn't hesitate to pull out the yellow card and then the red. Just as had been the case when Esobar burst past him, Bornstein reached and grabbed instead of just running with his man. While unlucky to get a second caution for a relatively insignificant offense, the fact he'd been carrying one already should have been sufficient warning.

Sensing the confusion and desperation in its opponent, Tauro FC pushed forward and in the 63rd minute a through ball sent Luis Moreno clear to twice befuddle Chivas USA defender Jim Curtin and strike a shot that hit the inside of the post. The ball slowly rolled along and over the goal line just before Francisco Mendoza could jab it away.

Down two goals on aggregate plus the away goal, Chivas USA needed three to win the series. It failed, but not for lack of opportunities, as the Tauro players celebrated in lieu of defending.

Waves of Chivas USA attacks, fueled by substitutes Ante Razov, Alecko Eskandarian and Jorge Flores, peppered the Tauro goal, but Dominguez and his defenders fended off every attempt.

Chivas USA starts a three-game road swing Saturday in Toronto.
