Kenwyne Jones has said that he would like to help Sunderland "restore some pride" in Saturday's derby against Newcastle United.
Jones returned to action last night, playing for 60 minutes in the reserves' 2-0 win over Wigan in Hetton.
By his own admission, the striker is short of being fully fit, but he is not ruling out an appearance in Saturday's Wear-Tyne derby.
"It feels nice to be back on the pitch and playing again," said Jones. "I was a little tentative in the beginning of the game but as it wore on I started moving better.
"I don't feel 100 per cent but I have some time to get there, it will take a few weeks, I've been working hard to get to this point.
"I've been out for a long time, this was 60 minutes of action, coming three weeks after I started training so it's still early. I was OK for that 60, we'll see what happens for Saturday, I can only take it one day at a time."
Jones' return last night attracted a capacity crowd to the Eppleton CW Ground in Hetton."It's very nice to have that kind of support, there's a family feeling going on at the club and it was nice to see people coming out to support me and the team," he said.
Sunderland have not beaten Newcastle at home for 28 years and Jones reckons it is time that changed.
He said: "The club has a good chance of winning the game. We want to get the three points against Newcastle and restore some pride."
Roy Keane, who watched last night's game, will wait until tomorrow before deciding whether to include Jones in his squad for the Newcastle game.
"We'll see how he is, I won't take any silly risks," said the Sunderland boss.
