Toni Schumacher fired as coach at half-time
Associated PressDecember 18, 1999Toni Schumacher, Germany's former goalkeeper, has become the first coach in German professional soccer to be fired at half-time of a game. Schumacher, who won the European title with the German national team in 1980 and played 76 international games, was sacked as his team, Fortuna Cologne, was losing its Second Division game against Waldhof Mannheim.
Fortuna president Jean Loering sacked Schumacher as soon as the team returned to the locker room after trailing 2-0 at half-time. The two have had a tense relationship for weeks. Schumacher immediately left the stadium and his assistant sat on the bench during the second half-time. It made no difference - Fortuna lost 5-1 and dropped to 16th place in Second Division standings, two above the bottom. Many other coaches criticized the unceremonious way Schumacher was sacked.
He had been coach at Fortuna since July 1998. Schumacher had spent lavishly on new players in hopes of leading Fortuna to the first Bundesliga division. But the team is instead in danger of relegation. Although he was considered one of the top goalkeepers in the world at the time, Schumacher was often remembered for a notorious tackle on French defender Patrick Battiston during a World Cup semifinal in Spain in 1982. Battiston was left with a broken jaw and Germany reached the final, losing to Italy. Schumacher's career effectively ended when he published a book alleging widespread doping in the Bundesliga.
