RF...I am sure all true football supporters in the Caribbean will be backing Jamaica to reach Brazil,Jamaica might have even done better against NZ had it not been that kind of travel distance, but I suppose you take matches like that without any argument.Well done.

Aye RF, whats the latest, long time I aint give u some talk.
Good result by jamaica, so you think tappa is the man eh?
I feel Jamaica will make it to the Hex, although with jamaica, like T&T and west indies, inconsistency is the consistent thing it seems, u never know which ja will show up.
The key is Guatemala, everybody will beat up poor Antigua, and USA will dominate everyone else.
Some men here like they get excited and bawling Ja will top the hex already. LOL.
Its gonna be tough, USA and Mexico seem to be pulling away even further, Costa Rica still bitter they lost out last time and coming strong for sure, I think they have the most impressive preparation over the last year, Honduras will attempt to repeat, shithong Panama always seem to find a way to surprise teams, and u never know what to expect from El Salvador and Guetamala.
Predicting that 3rd team from the region to qualify is a brave endeavour.

So wha u think about Portia and PNP back in business?
U think Usain will triple gold again?
What cause that dramatic reduction in Ja crime last year? Almost unbelievable..
U think Gayle will suit up for west indies ever again?

If I'm to go on record and predict the top three finishers in the Hex I'll definately have to go with USA, MEx, Costa Rica in that order.
Honduras, Jamaica, Panama, Canada to fight for the scraps. I do not expect much from Antigua, Guyana, Cuba, cant see them getting to the Hex

There are talks of a number of players in England joining the Jamaica squad, guys like fuller, jermaine beckford etc, if these guys can come
in and click, then I'd give Jamaica the edge over hon, pan, can over two legs, but thats a huge IF.

As far as Tappa is concerned, he brings something to the table that no other coach can bring to this team: he is well respected by the players, and can relate with
them better than any other coach can. In other words the guys are always motivated to do well for him. Personally i feel he is a little short on tactical awareness at the CONCACAF / international level
but he will improve the longer he remains at the helm. He will be the man in charge right through, so he will either fai or suceed at taking us to the promise land along with his Brazilian assistants.

Tappa is not a very camera happy type of guy, so i wouldnt be surprised if he delegated this responsibility to Montesso.
Having said that, i also wouldnt be surprised if it is a JFF mandate that Montesso handled the PR side of things as far as the coaching staff is concerned, as, sadly, corporate Jamaica are more likely to get involved with Montesso being Brazilian. Tapps is the head coach, Montesso his assistant...but you get the  feeling that Montesso is a more influential member of the coaching staff than is title may suggest.

MBU buoyed by St Fleur's arrival

BY PAUL A REID Observer Writer

TUCKER, St James — An air of optimism surrounded the Montego Bay United's training session at their home base on Thursday afternoon as Bahamian national player and former Sporting Central Academy's striker Lesley St Fleur made his first appearance for the Red Stripe Premier League outfit since signing in the January transfer.

St Fleur was one of several new signings for the team that is lying seventh in the standings despite losing just once since the first round but only arrived in the island on Wednesday afternoon.

[Hide Description] ST FLEUR... roughed up in practice match against Granville
[Restore Description]
1/1

The Bahamian started along side another newcomer, Horace James, at the forward positions for MBU in a practice game against Western Confederation outfit Granville United less than 24 hours after arriving in the island and several times the midfielders attempted to force the ball to him.

Obviously, not everyone was as impressed, however, as St Fleur had to be substituted in the first half after he was kicked in the back of the knee by a defender, minutes after he was forearmed across the nose and knocked to the ground in an off-the-ball incident by the same defender.

St Fleur, who scored three times for Sporting Central earlier in the season before leaving abruptly for a trial stint in the US, says he has been at home in the Bahamas since then and has managed to keep fit.

Obviously not satisfied with his accomplishments at SCA, he told Sporting World in an exclusive interview on Thursday that he was looking forward to "putting in my efforts here and hopefully I can get better results than I did while at Sporting Central".

This would be good news for MBU coach Nedier Dos Santos who worked with the Haitian-born St Fleur in his stint as the Bahamian national coach, as he has repeatedly said they needed more 'finishers' at MBU.

Despite their one defeat in 18 games, MBU have won just four times in that period and have given up early goals and forced to chase the game to earn a draw.

Interestingly, MBU have scored the most goals in the league so far with 34 and have given up 26 — the sixth best defensive record — but were in 10th position after the first round.

St Fleur said he was also "looking forward" to his reunion with the Brazilian coach who had led the Bahamas to the only win over Jamaica when they won 1-0 in a CONCACAF Olympic semi-finals qualifying series in Haiti in October 2007 where St Fleur scored the only goal.

In addition to Dos Santos, St Fleur will have two other familiar faces at the Montego Bay club as he will team up with national defenders, wing-back Troy Smith, and central defender Keneil Moodie, both of whom played for Jamaica against the Bahamas in Port Au Prince.

Arsenal youngster for Reggae Boyz friendly

Friday, March 16, 2012

Print this page Email A Friend!

ARSENAL B team forward Nigel Neita, along with three other overseas-based players, has been confirmed for Jamaica's friendly international against Costa Rica at the National Stadium next Wednesday.

Head coach Theodore ' Whitmore confirmed the young striker's availability after training at the match venue yesterday.

And although he declined to comment on his expectations of the player, he said the 18-year-old striker will definitely give the programme a big boost heading into next week's friendly match.

"We've invited four overseas players and have confirmed three already in Jermaine Taylor, Jevaughn Watson and Donovan Ricketts, but (Ricketts) he will be out with an injury.

"Nigel Neita has been confirmed and is expected to arrive in the island this Sunday, along with the others, and his presence will be a big boost for us," he said.

Whitmore reiterated the need to finalise a squad for the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers and says tough matches such as these can determine which players get in.

"As much as possible, we want to widen the pool of players... because our main objective is June 8 and beyond, so we want to get as much as we can out of these games," he said.

However, although finalising the squad is one of Whitmore's focus, he noted that there are also some technical areas that need improvement.

"This is just a continuation of the Cuba and New Zealand games... How we play, our organisation, our shape and ball possession are some things we are lacking, and we want to work on these things going forward into the Qualifiers," he added.

Costa Rica hold shorthanded Jamaica to draw
BY IAN BURNETT Sport Editor burnetti@jamaicaobserver.com
Thursday, March 22, 2012

Jamaica's Reggae Boyz lost captain Jermaine Taylor in the first half but they never lost spirit as they battled courageously to a goalless scoreline against Costa Rica inside the National Stadium last night.
The result snapped a three-game winning streak by the Jamaicans, who were coming off 1-0 and 2-0 triumphs over Caribbean neighbours Cuba here on February 22 an 24, as well as a 3-2 victory over New Zealand in Auckland on February 29

Win what hex, yuh smokin hay or what??!!

jamaica would be lucky to even make the hex this time around, and yes they are one of my favorites to make the hex, and hoping they do, bc there's no english speaking caribbean team in true contention for the hex, but remember, guatemala and ATB eh no push overs.

they must compete well in order to make the hex, remember JA has been choking in qualifications this past decade, lets just keep our fingers crossed that they do make it.

You cannot disregard the results that Jamaica have been getting in the recent past and more recently,I still feel when they are fully mobilised with their overseas players they will beat anybody.I am concerned about how Caribbean teams are perceived and will be willing Jamaica to buss everybody rass so the rest of the world will sit up and tek more notice.I know if it was us (TT) getting those results we wudda be on a high saying things like,"we can top de Hex",I still Trini 100% but me haffi back de Boyz.

Boyz made it difficult for us, says Ticos coach
BY ANDREW HANCEL Observer writer
Friday, March 23, 2012

COSTA Rican head coach Jorge Luis Pinto was clearly left frustrated by an ultra-defensive ploy by Jamaica in their international friendly in Kingston Wednesday night.
Los Ticos played with a numerical advantage for 53 minutes after the Reggae Boyz captain and central defender Jermaine Taylor was ejected by Canadian referee David Gantar for a second caution.
Jamaica’s Rohan Reid (left) and Costa Rica’s Jose Miguel Cubero challenge for a high ball during their international friendly at the National Stadium on Wednesday night. The game ended 0-0. (Photo: Garfield Robinson)
 1/1
But despite the edge in numbers and ball possession the Central Americans, who has had decent results against football powerhouses like Spain, Argentina and Brazil, were unable to break down a defiant Jamaican defence.
"It's being a complicated game, we are not satisfied that we were one man more and didn't take advantage...," said the Columbian Pinto through an interpreter.
"But in the end the results are positive because we are seeing a very good outcome of players in preparation of our world cup qualifiers coming up," he noted.
Both sides were unable to field full strength line-ups due to the fact that Wednesday wasn't an official FIFA date for friendly games.
Jamaica did create a few goal-scoring opportunities, but arguably the best chance of the match fell to Jairo Arrieta around the hour mark.
Arrieta had a deflected free-kick falling fortuitously for him but the Deportivo Saprissa striker blazed over the top from six yards.
So disappointed by the Arrieta's failure to put away such an excellent chance, Pinto immediately pulled the plug, replacing him with midfielder Nestor Monge.
"We know (for Jamaica) that there are some players that were missing. But overall, we think it's a very good team with some players who do make a big difference," Pinto said.
"Unfortunately, out of two clear opportunities that we had one of them should've been a goal. But thanks to the way how Jamaica developed throughout the game it made it more difficult for us."
Having said that, however, Pinto believes it was an opportunity missed by his more inexperienced players, who are battling for places in the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers starting June.
"We are very satisfied with the development of the game. We haven't been able to put some pressure on the opposing team," he said. "It's crucial for any team to have a very good 90 minutes of total pressure on the opposing team throughout the game.
"We were able to do that throughout some parts of the game but we still had some impatience because we didn't come with enough attacking men on our bench, so that complicated things a little bit. In the end the result is positive."

Montesso defends team strategy, selection
BY ANDREW HANCEL Observer writer
Friday, March 23, 2012

JAMAICA'S starting 11 against Costa Rica in Wednesday's international friendly at the National Stadium, in some people's minds, was far from an impressive unit.
The middle comprised two holding midfielders in Damian Williams and Rohan Reid in a standard 4-4-2 formation. Jermaine Hue, the lone creative midfielder in the team, was left on the bench for the entire 90 minutes, in a team boasting only two overseas-based players.

Man you are one delusional fella. You are saying that Jamaica cant get the better of Antigua and Guatemala home and away for a spot in the Hex? What has antigua done recently for you to feel they are "no pushovers?" didnt T&T just whack them 4-0 at home? they are probably the weakest team left in the copmetition... I didnt mention the USA because they will win the group, the competition is really for the remaininng spot.  Not sure what Guatemala is up to these days, but the fact that I've heard nothing from their quarters recently suggests to me that their football is not on the up at the moment...if there is one team in central america that I feel we can beat twice (home and away) it would have to be guatemala. I hope they dont prove me wrong :)

The thing that is going to look bad on caribbean teams is the heavy licking teams like Antigua, Guyana and to a lesser extent Cuba will take in central America, and in particular mexico. Jamaica could get blow out too, but i beleieve we have kept the scores respectable in our away games over the years.

Full-Strength Reggae Boyz To Face Panama

THE Reggae Boyz have secured another timely friendly international to help in their preparation for the World Cup Qualifying campaign opener against Guatemala here at the National Stadium in June 8.
Captain Horace Burrell, president of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), on Wednesday announced that the Panama Football Federation, with whom the JFF had already negotiated and agreed on a friendly international on May 27 here at the National Stadium, has offered to host the Reggae Boyz in Panama for a return fixture on June 1 with a kick-off time yet to be confirmed.

In addressing the media at a press conference to launch Jamaica Money Market Brokers' renewed support for the JMMB/JFF/UTech Coaching School at the JFF headquarters yesterday, Captain Burrell said that national head coach Theodore Whitmore would have all of Jamaica's top players, including those based overseas, at his disposal for those games.
The JFF boss said that the top players would be in a training camp, which will be called to prepare the Boyz for the important World Cup Qualifying fixture against Guatemala, and away to Antigua and Barbuda four days later.
The game here on May 27 is set for a 6:00 pm kickoff, with admission prices being: Grandstand Category One - $2,500; Grandstand Category Two - $2,000; and Bleachers - $800.
It is expected that players such as Marlon King, Omar Cummings, Ryan Johnson, Dane Richards, Luton Shelton, Chris Humphrey, whom it is believed has now acquired his travel documents, as well as Darren Pratley, Marvin Elliott, Jason Morrison, Rodolph Austin, Omar Daley, Keammar Daley, Je-Vaughn Watson, Claude Davis, Demar Phillips, Damion Stewart, Nathan Smith, Donovan Ricketts and Dwayne Miller could be in camp from as early as middle to late May.
Names such as Jermaine Beckford of Leicester City, Jobi McAnnuf, the Reading captain, who has played for Jamaica as a teenager in 2002, and Junior Hoilett of Blackburn, who can also represent Canada, are also said to be in the mix.

Panama will open their World Cup Qualifying campaign away to Honduras on June 8, then host Cuba four days later.
The Panama tie follows on the heels of two friendlies against Cuba, one against New Zealand for the month February, and last month's showdown against Costa Rica.

Stewart signsthree-year dealwith Aalesunds
André Lowe, Senior Staff Reporter

The Gleaner understands that Reggae Boyz striker Tramaine Stewart has secured a three-year deal with Norwegian outfit Aalesunds FC, after impressing on trial there.

Additionally, Tivoli Gardens striker, Navion Boyd, and Village's Dino Williams, who are also part of Jamaica's senior football team, are reportedly close to moves overseas, with both expected to sign for the United Soccer League (USL) outfit Charleston Battery sometime next week.

Stewart, who has been in hot form for his local Premier League club, Portmore United, was recommended to the Norwegian First Division campaigners by his national teammate Demar Phillips, who is now a key player for the club following his transfer from Stoke City in 2009.

Another Reggae Boy, Jason Morrison, is also contracted to Aalesunds.

The 24-year-old Stewart, who scored a goal against New Zealand in a recent friendly international, recently scored a hat-trick in a practice game for Aalesunds and is said to be a big hit among the outfit's technical staff.

Romel Wallen, Williams' agent, confirmed that a move is imminent for his client, and further explained that while there was interest from clubs in Europe, he chose the USL so that he will be able to remain with Village for their relegation battle.

"Dino had interests from two clubs in Sweden and Finland, respectively, but the player decided that he wasn't quite ready to leap to Europe at the moment and he really wanted to remain in Jamaica and help Village battle relegation, being their most important player," said Wallen, who is attached to the Pro-Goals Sports Management agency.

Tremendous benefits

Wallen is, however, looking forward to seeing his client join the USL ranks and believes that he stands to benefit tremendously from the experience that he will gain.

"As a result, he will be going to Charleston Battery to gain some exposure in the USL, a more professional league that will certainly help him in his development and ultimate leap to Europe," Wallen noted.

"Charleston for years has been a good stepping stone for Jamaican players, as coach Michael Anhaeuser is highly fond of Jamaican talent and helping them to develosp for the next level," he added.

In other news, national goalkeeper Duwayne Kerr, now contracted to Norwegian club Strommen, has been attracting significant interest in that part of the world.

He was recently approached by former Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who now manages defending champions Molde.

Solskjaer reportedly submitted two bids for the former Portmore United custodian. However, the bid was rejected by Strommen, who deemed the proposed fees inadequate.

Andrae Campbell off for trials in Norway

BY LIVINGSTON SCOTT Observer staff reporter

Thursday, April 12, 2012

FORMER national Under-20 and Waterhouse left fullback, Andrae Campbell, was scheduled to leave the island on Wednesday for a two-week trial stint with Norwegian First Division outfit, Nottoden FK.

The 22-year-old former Portmore United player headed a shortlist of players identified by head coach of player development at Nottoden FK, former Reggae Boy Altimont Butler, during a one-week scouting mission in the island in February.

CAMPBELL … this is my second chance and I intend to make the best of this opportunity, so I will go there and try to secure a contract

1/1

Butler, a former Portuguese and French League player, said he believes Campbell has all the attributes to succeed in Europe.

“He’s a very simple player with good technique and he has the right attitude... we watched him in the Waterhouse-Boys’ Town game and I thought he was impressive,” Butler told the Jamaica Observer via telephone from Norway.

“But left-footed players are rare and most clubs are on the hunt to find good left-sided players... and this will also be a great opportunity and a chance for him to play for a club in Europe,” he added.

According to Butler, Campbell will reside with him during the trial and will train with the first team, and he is confident that once the player comes in and work hard with the right attitude, he can make the breakthrough.

He also disclosed that other locals may follow Campbell in the near future as he is keeping his eyes on a number of possibilities.

“I like Joel Senior of Harbour View, he is a player who shows good work rate... and also Xavian Virgo (Boys’ Town) showed much potential... so hopefully by the latest June-July, we can get those two players on a trial here,” Butler noted.

Meanwhile, Campbell, who will be venturing on his second trial stint to the Scandinavian country, is confident of landing a deal this time around.

“This is my second chance and I intend to make the best of this opportunity, so I will go there and try to secure a contract... because we local players have to think this way, so we can help ourselves and make our family better,” he reasoned.

The young defender says he expects a very difficult two weeks, but insisted that with “hard work anything is possible”.

“I just have to remain disciplined, committed and be hungry for it... and once you have all those ingredients, then the sky’s the limit,” said Campbell.

Among the Jamaicans who have had stints at Nottoden FK are Harbour View’s Fabian ‘Koji’ Taylor and Boys’ Town’s Oneil ‘Bigga’ Thompson.

14 overseas-based Boyz for Guyana game

HEAD coach Theodore 'Tappa' Whitmore has summoned 14 overseas-based players for a friendly international against Guyana slated for the Montego Bay Sports Complex on May 18.
Among them are the Waftord pair of Nyron Nosworthy and Adrian Mariappa, whose availability is subject to their Jamaican immigration and citizenship documentation verification.
Others invited are Chris Humphrey (Motherwell Scotland), Omar Daley (Motherwell Scotland), Ricardo Fuller (Stoke City England), Damion Stewart (Notts County England), Nathan Smith (Chesterfield England) Claude Davis (Crawley Town England), Keammar Daley (Preston North End England), Marlon King (Birmingham England) Lance Laing (Fort LauderdaleStrikers USA), Darren Mattocks (Vancouver (Whitecaps USA), O'Brian Woodbine (VPS Finland), Luton Shelton (Karabukspor (Turkey).
Of the 14 players, there are seven defenders, three midfielders and four forwards.
It's the first time in a spell that so many England-based players have been named in a Reggae Boyz squad -- due mainly to the players' availability as the UK football season winds down.
Also, Whitmore is using the opportunity to have a fresh look at the established members, plus close-ups of the new recruits as he homes in on his final squad for CONCACAF Brazil 2014 World Cup qualifiers due to kick off inside the National Stadium on June 8.
"Having looked at our overseas-based and local-based players, we are now finalising plans," the former Jamaica international was quoted as saying in a release from the JFF.
"As we face a long qualifying period ahead, it has been necessary to look broadly, home and away and to be very open in our objective of putting the best available team on the pitch for every game," the release added.
The Guyana game comes exactly three weeks before Jamaica open their World Cup qualifying campaign against Guatemala at the CONCACAF semi-final stage.
Jamaica, ranked 47th by FIFA and the Caribbean's No 1 team, also have Antigua and Barbados and the USA in their group of the home-and-away play-off series.
Whitmore has indicated that fans will begin to see the shape of his squad emerging with the Guyana match-up and two quickfire games against Panama on May 27 in Kingston and a return in Panama City five days later.
Most, if not all, of the current overseas invitees, along with the best local talent should figure in the remaining friendlies -- a sort of final audition for players seriously seeking to secure spots in Whitmore's 'Mission to Rio' squad.
Following an undesirable set of results last year, the Boyz bounced back with encouraging performances and results this year in four friendly matches.
In February, they defeated Cuba (1-0 and 3-0) in two games in Kingston and Montego Bay, before journeying to New Zealand to chisel out a 3-2 over the Oceana giants.
In a lone game in March on a downsized FIFA calendar for friendly internationals, 10-man Jamaica and Costa Rica played to a 0-0 draw inside 'The Office'.
Though he may say that the final results in these practice games are not by themselves crucial, Whitmore would no doubt want to maintain his winning run to take a positive momentum into the World Cup qualifiers.
JFF boss Captain Horace Burrell said he negotiated the Guyana game because it could give players and the technical staff a feel of Antigua and Barbuda, who are grouped with the Boyz in the CONCACAF eliminations.
Guyana, who have seen a recent surge in their game, are expected to be at full strength for the 8:00 pm kick-off in the scenic north-west of the island, which has recently staged a flurry of international matches.
Guyana eliminated former regional powerhouse Trinidad and Tobago to advance to the CONCACAF semi-finals.

Jamaica cap wait over for Motherwell's Chris Humphrey

Motherwell winger Chris Humphrey is set for his international debut after being cleared to play for Jamaica.

The Well pace man has had 11 months in limbo since the Reggae Boyz first moved to include him in their squad last year.

Now Humphrey has been named to face Guyana on May 18, after arrangements to obtain a Jamaican passport were finalised.

The 24-year-old, who has one year remaining on his contract at Fir Park, had to wait for his cap chance after his involvement last spring hit red tape.

Humphrey is also eligible to play for England and Scotland and had been watched by Craig Levein before opting to turn out for the Reggae Boyz.

The midfielder, who came to Motherwell on a free transfer from Shrewsbury in 2009, is now in contention to make take his international bow at the Catherine Hall Stadium in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Humphrey is joined in the Jamaica squad by Fir Park team-mate Omar Daley.

Newness Won't Impact Reggae Boyz

Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) General Secretary, Horace Reid, does not believe that several new call-ups to the national squad - despite the start of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers being less than a month away - will negatively impact the Reggae Boyz as they look to assemble a squad capable of securing a spot at the 2014 World Cup Finals in Brazil.

Six new players were presented, along with the rest of the 24-man squad, for Friday's friendly international against Guyana at the Montego Bay Sports Complex, at a press conference at the JFF headquarters yesterday.

They are Portmore United duo Rosario Harriott and Ewan Grandison, Arnett goalkeeper Damion Hyatt, Harbour View striker Jermie Lynch and Watford (England) duo Nyron Nosworthy and Adrian Mariappa, two of 10 overseas-based players in the squad.

In addition to the debutants, several players were recalled, chief among them midfielders Omar Daley (Motherwell), Sean Fraser (Alianza) and defender Lance Laing (Fort Lauderdale Strikers). Also returning to the squad for Friday's 8 p.m. encounter is Jamaica's leading all-time scorer Luton Shelton, who now plies his trade for Turkish side Karabükspor. Shelton has missed the last couple of games after suffering an injury early in the season.

Several changes

In total, there have been approximately 12 changes since the team last played to a 0-0 draw against Costa Rica in March, with several players - including Ricardo Fuller and Marlon King - yet to feature.

Concerns have been raised in some quarters that with the qualifiers set to begin against Guatemala on June 8, not having a definite squad could be detrimental to team chemistry.

However, from Reid's perspective, having a deep squad and several choices will be just as necessary. Also included in the squad are three players from local Premier League winners Portmore United.

"It's important that we continue to widen our pool, because the campaign is a long one and one has to always be prepared for all the different factors that can come into play," Reid told The Gleaner.

"I remember in the 1998 campaign, at a crucial stage we found ourselves with a goalkeeper crisis, and we had to use a debutant in the goal. So it is always important to widen that pool; everyone won't play at the same time.

"The search for talent is always ongoing, it keeps all the players on their toes, it keeps the squad fresh and it keeps everybody focused once there is competition in the squad," Reid pointed out.

In addition to Guatemala, the Reggae Boyz have been drawn in Group A alongside Antigua and Barbuda and regional powerhouses the United States.

Crowd vents frustration at Jamaica team
Poor play leads to 1-0 loss against Panama
http://jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20120528/sports/sports1.html
------------------

Leading up to yesterday evening's game against Panama inside the National Stadium, Reggae Boyz head coach, Theodore 'Tappa' Whitmore, stated that he considered the match a perfect test ahead of the team's opening CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying (WCQ) semi-final round match against Guatemala on June 8.
The Boyz failed the mock exam miserably, as a 17th-minute goal by Luis Renteria was enough to earn Los Canaleros (The Canal Men) a 1-0 victory.

This was the senior team's first defeat inside the National Stadium since 2007 and first in five outings since the start of the calendar year, as they are coming off four victories and a draw.

This result and, more worryingly, the team's performance left a lot to be desired for the local fans, who booed the team at half-time and again following the final whistle.

The nation is now left concerned as to how the team will fare when the real test of the World Cup qualifiers comes along with Jamaica pitted in Group A alongside Guatemala, Antigua and Barbuda and the United States.

The teams will renew their battle on June 1 in Panama City, as the 52nd-ranked Panama are also preparing for the next round of qualifiers where they will face Cuba, Canada and Honduras.

The Panamanian team, which was missing six of their regular starters, sounded an early warning in the second minute when Renteria got off a tame shot from the centre of the area, which went harmlessly wide.

Fifteen minutes later, Jamaica were made to pay for some non-existent marking, as Renteria got off an unchallenged header from a right-sided corner that was deli-vered by Amir Waithe, which left custodian Dwayne Miller rooted to the spot as it hit the back of the net to hand the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Jamaica attempted to muster a response in the 21st minute when Keammar Daley found himself unmarked in the area, but he volleyed well over the bar.

Fuller impresses

One of the few bright sparks for the team was Stoke City man Ricardo Fuller, who got in 90 minutes of play. He came closest for Jamaica in the first half when his curling effort from the right side of the area came back off the left upright.

Panama emerged for the second half with an obvious plan to maintain ball possession in midfield, something they were able to do with good effect.

Whitmore rang in the changes in the second half, with introduction of a number of offensive players, including Chris Humphery.

The Motherwell player, who was making his debut, had one moment of note in the 63rd minute when he executed a 35-yard drive which cannoned off the right post. Outside of that though, the 24-year-old's first touch looked unsure and he did not link up well with Xavian Virgo on the right.

Another second half substitute, Errol Stevens, exchanged passes with Marlon King on the top of the area before getting off a curling effort which the Panamanian keeper and captain, Jaime Penedo, moved to his right to save.

A goalmouth scramble in the 85th minute provided Jamaica with another goalscoring opportunity after a header by Claude Davis was parried by Penedo. The follow-up efforts by Fuller and Rohan Reid failed to hit the target.

Jamaica's assistant coach, Alfredo Montesso, revealed that the team was most disappointed with the result which he believed came down to a moment of lapse in concentration and poor chemistry.

"We didn't play a good game, but Miller did not make a single save and we missed some opportunities," Montesso expressed.

"We felt a little bit of lack of chemistry in the team today, but some of them are playing for the first time together. It was a lack of concentration on the corner kick that we paid the price for," he added.

Panama's coach, Julio Dely Valdes, was pleased with the result, especially given that so many of his key players were missing.

"Jamaica had some good chances, but in the first half we managed to score a goal and that was the goal that stood until the end of the game," Valdes recounted through an interpreter.

Burrell urges fans to be patient
http://jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20120528/sports/sports2.html

A paltry showing by the Reggae Boyz yesterday evening induced boos from the modest gathering inside the National Stadium as the team suffered a 1-0 defeat against Panama.

President of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), Captain Horace Burrell, is craving the patience of the local supporters ahead of the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying (WCQ) semi-final, which kick-offs on June 8 when the Boyz tackle Guatemala in the opening match of the group, which is completed by Antigua and Barbuda and the United States.

"I believe the crowd that was here today is very supportive of the Reggae Boyz and though I am a bit disappointed, you have to realise that the fans too were frustrated and obviously were overcome by emotions," Burrell shared with The Gleaner.

Asking for lenience

"You can't beat up the crowd for that, we would have to ask them to be a little bit more patient. It is early days, we haven't begun the campaign as yet and it is still a work in progress and work begins the eighth of June, so I am personally asking the public to give the players and the coaching staff a little bit more time and I am sure they will get it right," he added.

This was the team's first defeat at the National Stadium since 2007 and the first at any venue since this year, having registered four wins and a draw; 1-0 and 4-0 triumphs over Cuba in a two-game series, a 3-2 away win in New Zealand, a goalless draw with Costa Rica and the most recent a 1-0 win over Guyana.

"Naturally, I am very disappointed in that we lost the game and having listened to the comments, it is clear that the management felt the same way that they did not perform to their optimum and going forward, certainly, we will see a better effort," Burrell expressed.

However, he believes with a little bit of luck, the result could have been a bit different, as the team hit the post on two occasions through strikes from Ricardo Fuller and Chris Humphrey.

Home game

"Seeing the number of shots which hit on to the goalpost, the score could have been at least 3-1 with a little bit of luck," Burrell reasoned. "But having said that, playing at home, one has to be able to win the games.

"But I'm heartened by the fact that the coaches recognise that they did not do well today and they will need to improve. So I am prepared to continue to support the coaching staff, give them all the necessary support that they need to continue to try and do their best," he added.

Burrell shied away from commenting on the performance of the coaching staff to date, as he believes they need a bit more time.

"The coaches are aware of things they have to do in order to enhance their chances going forward and I am prepared to leave that to the coaches and not make any comments," he said.
