CAL is official airline for Reggae Girlz

CARIBBEAN AIRLINES (CAL) is strengthening its partnerships in Jamaica, and is now the official airline of the Reggae Girlz; the official airline of Carnival in Jamaica 2019 and the presenting sponsor for Reggae SumFest for the next two years.

A Caribbean Airlines press release on Wednesday said the agreement marries two of the region’s top brands.

“As an authentic Caribbean air carrier that is proudly owned by the people of Jamaica and TT, this union represents a natural partnership of two of the region’s leading brands. Reggae SumFest is the largest concert festival in Jamaica, and Caribbean Airlines is the leading airline serving Jamaica and the Caribbean. We are proud to bring over 485,000 travellers to and from Jamaica annually,” CAL said.

“This collaboration with Reggae SumFest is a significant milestone for Caribbean Airlines deepening our partnerships within Jamaica and throughout the region. Caribbean Airlines is thrilled and feels privileged to be the official airline of the Reggae Girlz who created history by becoming the first Caribbean team to reach the FIFA Women’s World Cup. This accomplishment was no small feat!”

CAL said, similar to the Reggae Girlz, they faced challenges but worked tenaciously to turn things around to deliver this historic result. Through this and other partnerships, CAL promised to strengthen its relationships within Jamaica and the region.

Ricardo Gardner is now the head coach for Portmore United and won the 2019 Flow Concacaf Caribbean Club Championship (FCCCC) to earn a berth in the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League.

Surprised Dwight Yorke never really got into the coaching scene even if it was for a small team to start off with. I know he wants to coach a recognisable team in England, but sometimes you have to start small even if you were a good player.

England move to secure Mason Greenwood and Maitland-Niles futures as Jamaica eye international reinforcements

England manager Gareth Southgate will reportedly speak with four players born to Jamaican parents regarding their international futures, including Manchester United's Mason Greenwood and Arsenal's Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

There are 124 players across the top four divisions in England born in England to Jamaican parents or grandparents, and TVJ Sports claim Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips and Everton's Mason Holgate are also of interest to Southgate.

The Yorkshire Evening Post add that Phillips will meet with Southgate on Friday over a possible call-up to England's next squad in September.

Jamaican agent Devon Porter told TVJ Sports: "He was excited about representing Jamaica, even though he understands that Gareth Southgate has been monitoring him for a while now.

"He is passionate about his Jamaican heritage and he's very, very interested in representing Jamaica."

He added: "I am in the interim of contacting Mason Holgate from Everton through his agent. I've sent him an email and he will reply to me.

"He is on paternity leave and after he's off his leave he will have a discussion with Mason and then get back to me."

When asked by TVJ Sports about the fate of the four, Jamaica head coach Roy Simpson said it is a must that not all choose to represent England.

He said: "The decision is for every player to make, however, if we still do not get the services of any of those players we can't continue to remain Qatar-motivated and can't continue to carry the hopes of our Jamaican people."

Jamaica are expected to begin qualification for the 2022 World Cup next summer. One younger player who could represent the Reggae Boyz is United youngster Ethan Laird, who has played for England at Under-17, -18 and -19 level.

Porter said: "He is a very talented young player. These players would love to come back and play for Jamaica.

"This would bring loads of depth to the team, especially at the right-back position in case of injuries. We have players in the pool we can call on at any time."

Raheem Sterling, Luther Blissett and John Barnes are three who were born in Jamaica before emigrating to England.

Luton Shelton, one of Jamaica's most prolific goalscorers, is dead

Luton Shelton, one of Jamaica's most prolific goalscorers died on Friday at the Andrews Memorial Hospital in St Andrew. He was 35.

The talented footballer was pronounced dead after he developed complications and was unresponsive when he was rushed to the hospital.

Shelton since 2016 has been battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

ALS disease is an illness that causes the motor neurons inside your spinal cord to die. Over time, the muscles degenerate and you lose the ability to move, speak, swallow and, eventually, breathe.

Shelton was diagnosed with the cruel illness, 19 months after he got injured while representing Harbour View Football Club in a Red Stripe Premier League game against Tivoli Gardens at the National Stadium. That game, which took place on February 21, 2017, was the last football match for Shelton.

Only one man, Ted Harada of Los Angeles in California, in recorded medical history ever recovered from ALS.

Shelton made his international debut for Jamaica in 2004 and went on to earn 75 caps scoring a record 35 goals.

Shelton represented Wolmer’s Boys High School before moving on to Harbour View FC, where he scored 44 goals. He then went overseas and played for a number of clubs in Sweden (Heisingborg IF), England (Sheffield United), Norway (Valerang), Turkey (Karabukspor), and Russia (Volga Nizhny Novgorod).

Shelton is survived by his wife Bobbette and three children.

While not giving hints on his international future, Reggae Boy target Ivan Toney says that he is committed to give his best to whichever national team he decides to play for.

The 24-year-old Brentford striker is reportedly on the radar of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) as part of a list of English-born players who they are interested in bringing into the Reggae Boyz fold ahead of a critical year, which includes the 2021 Gold Cup tournament and the final round of World Cup qualifiers, starting in September. Everton's Mason Holgate, Bayer Leverkusen's Damari Gray, Southampton's Nathan Redmond, Newcastle United's Isaac Hayden and Ranger's Kemar Roofe, who just captured the Scottish title, are among the other names that the federation is looking to add to the team.

Jamaica reportedly have a list of 10 English players they want to call up to their national team ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with eight of those footballers already in the process of getting their Jamaican passports.

As announced by Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) president Michael Ricketts this week, the Caribbean island nation is interested in calling up a host of English players for international duty ahead of the World Cup next year.

The country is said to have hopes of qualifying for the tournament in Qatar in 2022, and are looking to strengthen by attempting to lure some English-born talents who have ties with Jamaica to the national team.

"I see Andre Gray, Demarai Gray, Isaac Hayden, Mason Holgate, Liam Moore, who already has his Jamaican passport, Nathan Redmond, Kemar Roofe and Ivan Toney. All of these, we are in the process of acquiring their Jamaican passports," Ricketts said, according to the Daily Mail.

"The process is becoming a little tedious because of the pandemic but the process is ongoing and we are hopeful we will get the passports for these gentlemen in reasonable time.

"We have been having discussions. I just spoke with the Permanent Secretary for Sport and he has agreed to try and help us to facilitate and to expedite the process."

The other two players Jamaica are looking to call up are West Ham United striker Michail Antonio and Norwich City right-back Max Aarons, although it is understood the latter still needs convincing.

It was claimed last week that Antonio is set to switch his international allegiance from England after being overlooked by Gareth Southgate in recent selections. The forward was called up for Three Lions duty in 2016 for three 2018 World Cup qualifiers, but did not make it off the bench in all three games.

Aarons, 21, has represented England at youth level but faces stiff competition in his position, with the likes of Kieran Trippier, Reece James, Kyle Walker and Trent Alexander-Arnold ahead of him in the Three Lions fold.

Of the other eight players on the JFF's radar, Redmond is the only player to have earned an international cap for England, an appearance that dates back to 2017, but the Southampton winger has the option of changing his allegiance as that match was a friendly fixture.

The player with the biggest profile in the Jamaican national side is Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey, who has been capped on eight occasions. Fulham's Michael Hector and Bobby Decordova-Reid also feature for the nation.

Salernitana have secured two new signings today, with reports they have deals for Poland international Mateusz Legowski and Jamaica talent Trivante Stewart.

Coach Paulo Sousa had complained openly in interviews over the last few days that he did not have the reinforcements he wanted for this season.

According to Sky Sport Italia, the club has picked up two internationals who will have their medical tests over the next 24 hours.

The first is 20-year-old midfielder Legowski, who spent time in the Valencia youth academy and is now playing for Pogon Szczecin.

He has one senior cap for Poland, coming off the bench against the Netherlands in the Nations League in September 2022.

They also have an agreement for Mount Pleasant centre-forward Stewart, a 23-year-old who has three senior caps for Jamaica.

In his Jamaica Premier League career, including the play-offs, he has scored 30 goals in 66 games.

Stewart is already in Salerno and will have his medical tomorrow.
