Which jamaican?

It doesn't matter which one, they can't come close to Yorke.  If Yorke eh win then it should be Latas, if not Latas then is Hardest.

LINDY DELAPENHA

WHEN Lindy Delapenha started playing professional football in the English First Division over 50 years ago, he was the first non-white player to do so.

A pioneer in his time, Lindy represented Portsmouth as a striker and won a league championship medal in 1949.

Portsmouth won back to back Division I titles in 1948 and 1949. But Lindy only played four matches in the first year and all of 24 in his second year with the club.

In 1949, two years after a scout spotted him playing for the British Army in Egypt, Lindy was regarded as one of the most lethal strikers in English football. He played at both the inside right and outside right positions.

After a successful stint with Portsmouth, Lindy was transferred to Middlesborough for 1500 pounds in 1950. He played with distinction for the Division I club from 1950 to 1955, scoring a record 22 goals in 1952. That record still stands.

Middlesborough was relegated to the second division in the mid-50s and Lindy stayed there until 1958 before moving on to Mansfield Town to play Division III football. He was transferred for 6000 pounds.

Getting on in age at the beginning of the 60s, Lindy wrapped up his professional career in 1963 with non-league side Burton Albion, helping the club to win the Southern League Cup in 1963 by scoring the winning goal in the final.

After returning to Jamaica in early 1965, Lindy not only played Sugar Estate cricket, but represented Boys' Town at football, taking the club from Division III to Division I, before moving to Liguanea/Mona. Shortly after he became director of Sports at JBC (raidio and TV) and was instrumental in brimging English Division I football and horseracing, among other things, to television in the late 60s.

An old boy of Wolmers' and Munro where he represented the latter at football, cricket, track and field, hockey, boxing and gymnastics, Lindy went on to represent Jamaica in golf for many years in the Heorman Cup.

For his outstanding contribution to football, Lindy Delaphena was inducted to the Jamaica Sports Hall of Fame last year.

so exactly what is the defining criteria used to select the winner?

The fact that Lindy was the first non-white to play top flight football in England is a big achievement in itself.

Oh.  So dat is wha de award was for?  Fuss non white to play top flight football in England?

Fuss of all, dat claim is a LIE!

That title belongs to one Arthur Wharton.

Quote
Although it is claimed he was the first non-white player to appear in the English Football League First Division,he was actually predated by several other non-white players, including Arthur Wharton, who played a First Division match for Sheffield United as far back as 1894-95.

FALSE CLAIMS

He was the first Jamaican footballer to play top flight football in England.  But again...when yuh biased yuh will say and do anyting to make yuh case look good.

If dat award is based on dat claim....it worthless jes like de claim.

If that was the criteria fuh giving the man the award....it is seriously embarrassing, like these people never heard of researchers, 'yuh have to validate before yuh congratulate'. If not, then they shouldn't have called this a "Caribbean" award as the man shouldn't have won (no offense to the gentleman in question).

The whole thing just demonstrates how Jamaica views the achievements of the Sportsmen of other Caribbean nations. As soon as they hear a Jamaican... might have achieved something, it must obviously be true as they are Jamaican after all.

This would be the same as saying that Hasley Crawford is greater than Usain Bolt.

You try selling any rational thinking person that, using the same arguments put forth for why Delapena is more deserving than Yorke.

The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today are Christians who acknowledge Jesus ;with their lips and walk out the door and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.

De Caribbean divided because a LIES like those.

I'll say it again, Delapenha's achievement back then was special, matters not if he was the first or the second none-white, fact remain that the man was one of the most feared strikers in the England top flight back in the days when whites dominated the sport.

Actually, Lindy was the first black player to play for Portsmouth and Middlesboro, and only the second "none white" to play in the English top flight back then.

"Lindy Delaphena (winger): Signed for Boro from Portsmouth in 1950 and remained until 1958. Scored ninety-three goals in 270 games. Had probably the hardest shot in the game with either foot and in my view was even better at this than Peter Lorimer. His most famous moment was when he broke the net after taking a penalty against Sunderland in a friendly game to open the floodlighting at Ayresome Park. The referee thought he had missed and awarded a goal kick.

He was the first black player ever to represent the Boro and one of the first and very few to grace the First Division in those days. Johnny tells a lovely story that would not be allowed today in this PC World. Boro had a tall black supporter called Aster whose distinctive voice could always be heard above any crowd. When Lindy got the ball Aster usually shouted, "You Black trash!" Everybody laughed, none more so than Lindy himself who always claimed that this made him play better. More importantly, no one took offence because there was no obvious racism involved.

The fact that Walsh get nominated when they could only pick 5 cricketers tell u how biased it is...I not even going and start to list cricketers who ahead of Walsh for accolades. Just because he is a nice fella doh mean he is a great cricketer.

Steups...make sure and qualify for the hex so we could give allyuh a nice cutarse next year when it matters.

No scene, We  know that Dwight is the most successful footballer in the caribbean but other folks in the caribbean need some recognition too. Plus, Dwight is still playing. These awards usually go to people who are already retired long time.  Its good to see a rich history of quality soccer players coming from the caribbean though.
Anyway look some goodtimes from Yorke back in the day with aston villa....before he win the trebble with Man-U, before he win the aussie league with sydney FC, befere he captained T&T to their first world cup and before he win the english championship division with sunderland to gain promotion to EPL again.

I see they interview the duttiest men in the room first: Dwight and Bosnich.
Dwight talking about partying the night away, and Bosnich scoping out all the bad ting in the room while he woman getting interviewed.

I wonder if that was the night them men buss out the video recorder.
