Dynamo acquire Julius James from TFC.
Houston Dynamo Media Relations.

The Houston Dynamo have acquired defender Julius James and allocation money from Toronto FC in exchange for Midfielder Dwayne De Rosario, it was announced Friday.

"We would like to thank Dwayne for his leadership, commitment, and contributions during his tenure with the Dynamo," said Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear. "He has been a valuable asset to our team, but it is time for both parties to move on. This move is in the best interest of everybody and now gives the Dynamo real opportunity to address a number of its off-season goals. We are receiving a bright young talent in Julius James, and now have great salary cap flexibility to bring in players that can add to our strong base."

James comes to the Dynamo after his rookie season in Toronto, where he saw action in 13 MLS games. James, 24, is highly regarded as a tough, physical back with size and speed. He is a Trinidad & Tobago native and member of its national team. He earned his first cap against Guyana on September 3, 2008. In his MLS debut, he scored in the 49th minute against the Los Angeles Galaxy.

James was the ninth overall selection in the 2008 SuperDraft out of the University of Connecticut. At UConn, he earned First Team All-Northeast and First Team All-Big East honors. Additionally, he was named to the Big East All-Tournament Team and won Big East Defensive Player of the Year three years in a row. He was also a M.A.C. Herman Trophy semifinalist in 2007

"Julius is an aggressive, fast defender that fits really well in our style of play. I think he has a very bright future, not only in our club, but also in Major League Soccer," added Kinnear.

In his three seasons with the Dynamo, De Rosario scored 24 goals and distributed 11 assists, also netting two goals and four assists in 12 playoff games.

"The organization thanks Dwayne for his very valuable contributions," said Dynamo Chief Operating Officer Chris Canetti. "Over the last few days, it became apparent that this move was necessary. Before the trade, our salary cap limitations precluded us from making any significant moves. We now have plenty of flexibility on how we want to build our roster and field another very competitive squad, both domestically and internationally."

Under new rules, MLS team can now have between 18 and 20 players on its senior roster. The Dynamo currently has 15 players under contract for 2009. The Dynamo will compete in a minimum of 39 games this season between MLS, CONCACAF Champions League and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

"This trade is not a first step in overhauling the current roster or starting a rebuilding process," added Canetti. "We are still in a win-now mindset and believe that this move gives us the best chance to be winners in 2009. The trade addresses both our immediate cap challenges and a need on the back line. Additionally, this move helps us look to the future as we add a more young talent to a team of many proven veterans."

The Houston Dynamo will open their 2009 MLS regular season at home on Saturday, March 21 against the 2008 MLS Cup champion Columbus Crew. Kickoff for this game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. (TV: Fox Soccer Channel). For more information, please call the Houston Dynamo ticket line at 713-276-7500 or log on to the Dynamo Ticket Center.

TFC fans are elated with the trade.  James was a solid young defender, but Derosario is Canadian and one of the MVP's of MLS.  He is a game breaker and Toronto is his home town.  Great deal for TFC, Toronto and all Canadian fans.

TFC will make the play-offs this year and the hottest field in MLS, BMO Field, will be rocking.

CATHAL KELLY

After three years of one-sided romance, the management of Toronto FC has finally shown the team's supporters some real love. The addition of Dwayne De Rosario – local boy, outsized talent – is the transaction equivalent of a big, sloppy kiss.

The native of Scarborough was welcomed home yesterday afternoon, gift-wrapped from Houston. He was swapped for defender Julius James and allocation money, which FC has spent the last two seasons stockpiling like Scrooge.

In most exchanges of talent, there is a period of sober observation that should follow before either side is declared a winner. Let's chuck that out the window and declare this, hands down, the best transaction for a Toronto franchise since Leeman et al for Gilmour and friends, or Carter and Alomar for McGriff and Fernandez. Not that Houston must lose here, but Toronto has already won in every sense.

This is the sort of transaction that can transform a franchise, and a fan base along with it. FC's GM Mo Johnston has taken a great deal of heat in this space for his sit-on-your-hands approach to sports management, but he deserves nothing but congratulations this morning for engineering the I'll-believe-it-when-I-see-it deal nobody really believed they'd ever see. Maybe all those coy, come hithers issued by De Rosario whenever he floated through town on international duty actually worked. Maybe Johnston has finally embraced the idea that a North American team requires North American talent. Whatever did it, it's injected some much needed buzz into a side that was beginning to slide out of the reckoning of sports editors and omnivorous fans across this city.

How does this switch work? Let me count the ways.

One, Toronto FC has been buried under their domestic quota for both years of its existence. On a 28-man roster that must be at least half Canadian, FC has never found more than two domestic regulars. De Rosario's inclusion – in the place of a Trinidadian to boot – eases that pressure enormously.

Two, De Rosario arrives not as a pricey designated player, but as a regularly paid schmo included under the roughly $2.3 million (all figures U.S.) league-financed salary cap. Last year, he earned $325,000, which would make him FC's highest paid player. And it's a bargain, folks.

Three, he is, in a word, really freaking good. Those who remember him streaking in from the left to pot a long-distance screamer in Canada's friendly versus Costa Rica at BMO Field a couple of summers ago will attest to that. He is probably the second best Canadian player, period, this side of Deportivo's Julian de Guzman. He's already won the MLS Cup four times. That's four more than the entire FC roster combined. With apologies to Amado Guevara, he is the first bona fide star Toronto FC has possessed.

Four, and maybe most importantly, he arrives at a key moment for this team.

While ticket sales continue briskly and stadium expansion sits on the lips of MLSE suits, nobody seemed to notice the $12-beer-buying natives getting restless.

Two years of dismal play will do that to you. But De Rosario's arrival promises a sporting rebirth and a new injection of interest from the local public. It's a huge win, easily the biggest in franchise history.

Not too old yet, but there is little to gain for him at this point.  He is making big bucks in MLS ($350,000) and playing at home.  That is tough to beat.  It also means less travel for internationals.

This is a guy who shows hjow far a good work ethic would carry you. If the once mentioned Bleeder had this fella's work ethic the world would have opened up for him. DDR is a quite ordinary, a little on the wild side, hard working footballer who knew what he wanted to do in life. I was never impressed by him except for his hard work on the field. Having said all of that I believe Dynamo got the better deal.

Can't agree with the quite ordinary part but he's definitely hard working and I would agree that he's a little wild.

Hope things work out well for Julius.
