We leading going into the New Year, so I guess now is a good time to start a thread where allyuh other people/things could come and pay homage to us

Misery for Magpies as Reds run riot

Steven Gerrard bagged a brace as Liverpool laid down the Premier League title gauntlet with a ruthless 5-1 demolition of Newcastle on Sunday.

Rafael Benitez's pacesetters pulled four points clear of second-placed Chelsea, who play Fulham at Craven Cottage, but they could have won by an even more convincing scoreline had Shay Given not pulled off a string of world-class saves in the first half.

The Magpies goalkeeper denied Dirk Kuyt and both Gerrard and Lucas Leiva on two occasions with stunning stops, while Charles N'Zogbia made a goalline clearance as the Reds ran the hosts ragged early doors.

But Given could do nothing to stop Gerrard's clinical opener on 31, when the England star sidefooted in off the inside of the upright after a clever cut-back from the right touchline by Yossi Benayoun.

It was 2-0 five minutes later as Sami Hyypia steered a towering header from a Gerrard corner into the net - but the beleaguered hosts were given a lifeline on the stroke of half-time when David Edgar glanced home from a corner.

Michael Owen had earlier had a goal ruled out for Damien Duff being offside before crossing to him - but he didn't get a sniff after the break and the Reds went two clear again on 50 minutes, when six Newcastle players watched a still ball in their six-yard box, allowing Ryan Babel to poke home from close range.

Joe Kinnear sent Geremi on from the bench and he hit the crossbar with a free-kick on 58, but Gerrard made it a four-star display on 66 when he latched onto Lucas' defence-splitting pass and dinked the ball over Given.

Steven Taylor was lucky not to see red for a frustrated rugby tackle on Pepe Reina 15 minutes from time, but Reds sub Xabi Alonso ensured there were high fives all round for the visitors on 76 after converting a penalty awarded by referee Mark Halsey after Edgar had fouled David Ngog in the box.

Danny Guthrie's late free-kick was tipped over the bar by Reina - but there was little to celebrate for Newcastle fans on the day unpopular owner Mike Ashley confirmed he no longer plans to sell the club.

that could be said for most clubs. Pool have won 17 trophies since 1990. I am sure most of us on the site born before 1990

Funny how that works. Torres could be the best player on the team, yet the team may be better off without him. Not saying that is the case, but it sometimes happens. I think both Aston Villa and Everton will give Arsenal a run for the 4th CL spot, and it will be a 3 horse race between Liverpool, Chelsea and ManU...down to the wire.

From a neutral's perspective, it would be good to have Liverpool win it. Deep down, I hoping Villa and Everton just catch a fire and shake things up. I feel Villa have the legs, not so sure about Everton.

Steven Gerrard charged over bar fracas

The Liverpool and England midfielder ­Steven Gerrard was last night charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray following an incident at a Southport bar which left a man needing hospital treatment for facial injuries.

Gerrard, one of six men arrested following the incident, was charged with two other men after being held by police for nearly 24 hours following his arrest at the Lounge Inn, a venue in a quiet part of the Merseyside town.

He was released in the early hours of this morning.
