Pro-League to expand.
« on: January 20, 2009, 11:02:02 PM »
New clubs seek Pro League birth.

The TT Pro League line-up of teams is expected to grow from ten (10) clubs to maybe fourteen (14) clubs in 2009 following interests from South End, Angostura 1976 Phoenix and Marabella Flames among others.

South End, Phoenix and Flames are all in talks with the TT Pro League hoping to meet the requirements of the professional league with the deadline date set as January 30, 2009.

Also in the mix for the 2009 season are Police FC, hoping for a comeback after missing out the 2008 season due to national security reasons. Police FC's debut year in the Pro League was in 2007 which they finished ninth in the League.

TT Pro League CEO Dexter Skeene confirmed interests by the new clubs saying, "This is unprecedented in the League's history. It augurs well for the League. It shows that we are doing something well. It shows that the brand, TT Pro league, is getting alot of interest locally and internationally because some of these owners are foreign based."

"We will be looking at the proposed entrants when the board of directors meet on February 3rd and at that point we will decide who will be added within the Pro League."

CLICO San Juan Jabloteh, W Connection, North East Stars, Neal and Massy Caledonia AIA, Joe Public, United Petrotrin, St Ann's Rangers, Defence Force, Ma Pau SC and Tobago United are all expected to return for the 2009 season however Skeene went on to explain that a demotion process will be discussed in February's Board Meeting.

"Demotion will definitely be discussed. We are also looking forward to working with the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) and the Super League to promote teams into the Pro League," added Skeene.

The Board of Directors of the TT Pro League will meet on February 3 and further to that date, announce the successful applicants ahead of the 2009 season.
Marabella Flames confident of Pro League birth.

South based club Marabella Flames is confident that their application to join the Pro League line-up of clubs for the 2009 will be accepted.

Chairman of the club Anthony Lambert based in the US explained that although his club is very young after only being established in 2007 they can meet the requirements of the Pro League with ease.

"We are confident that our application will be accepted," said the Trinidadian businessman. "Financially and with our proper club structure we are ready for the professional level."

"For the past two years we have been preparing ourselves for the professional environment and we are ready. Our main focus establishing Marabella Flames was doing something for the southern community and we are happy that things are looking great for us."

Marabella Flames participated in their first competitive level football in the Southern Football Association in 2008 and finished 6th under coach Jan Steadman—a former Trinidad and Tobago international.

Lambert explained that there will be a number of additions to the club in 2009 as the club is negotiating with a number of coaches internationally and locally but preferred not to release names. The club is also in the process of scouting for players throughout Trinidad.

Further to that, Lambert boasted that his club will have the 'biggest soccer academy' based in south Trinidad. Their academy will be tied with CHAMPS (children happy and motivated playing soccer) United Incorporated—a soccer academy based in the New York.

Marabella Flames will however have to wait along with the applications of South End—another southern based club and Angostura 1976 Phoenix of Tobago to see whether or not their applications will be accepted by the Pro League. The Board of Directors of the TT Pro League will meet on February 3 and further to that date, announce the successful applicants ahead of the 2009 season.

14 teams is a waste. The league go be watered down.

They should have an 8 team league for now.

Let the two best super League clubs in the country form a Div. two with the other pro clubs.

Then they can have a two team promotion/demotion at the end of the season.

And the Super League teams can fight it up for promotion to the Div. Two.

If the teams show sufficient quality, then they can always expand the number of teams in the pro league.

They can all still compete in the FA and League Cup.

Peace,

watering down is true to an extent but i think tobgo really needs a grass roots team in the pro divison. gives the skill yutes something to aim towards without having to relocate to trini

The league won't be watered down if the new owners bring in foreign  players. Then again these teams might neglect their youth development duties.  An expanded league could see more young players running out too. It all depends on the policies the league puts into place.

Either way the PL and TTFF need to collaborate to make the U-20 team a fixture in the league, at least until more teams start to adopt Jablo philosophy.

My concern is competition for already reluctant business sponsorship.  The Pro League needs to develop itself and its member clubs as business entities before they think about expansion.  They have zero business model, constantly begging for money from the government, but calling the entity a Pro League.  Honestly, they are too far behind in terms of marketing and business development.  They need to go abroad and benchmark some of the more successful leagues, and adapt some of the ideas locally.

I don't know how Skeene could equate more teams wanting to join the PFL as a sign that they doing something well.  The attendances still poor, the league is still (arguably) not run properly in terms of financial growth, the players are arguably still way below international standards, and there is no immediate signs of improving on the above...after how much years now.  I think that people seeing it as though once you could come up with the $500,000 to join up, then no problem.

So putting more teams in the fray, could possibly just add to the PFL expenses and have more shit to go around.  The big teams already complaining about 'burn-out' towards the end of the season.  Perhaps one good thing is that Maturana might discover some other school boy (with potential) to bring unto the national team.  Also if the teams community based, then they might get some support to follow them around until they get blaze out by the veteran teams.

The history of 'new' teams joining the Pro League and doing well does not help the cause either...
Police finished 9th last time around.  Ma Pau...get one setta licks.  Tobago Utd is struggling to keep they head above water.  Now this Marabella Flames (never heard of them) finished 6th in the SFA (under Jan) and the bossman talking about structure, and preparing for the past 2 yrs.  That sound like he just have some big money to throw away.  They have

Fourteen teams will definitely water down the league.

A merger might probably be the best way to go at this time, but I still feel if they cyah manage the thing when it small...no point in expanding at this time.  Instead of watering the thing down...try to make it more exclusive...harder to get in.  People always yearn for what they can't have, and the ones on the inside will want to cherish it all the more.

I sure allyuh know the feeling when yuh in the VIP in the club and watching the plebs in the 'outside'.  Or when yuh standing in the line...in the snow...waiting to get in the club half-block away, and three fellas (not even celebrities) walk pass and the bouncer just lift the rope and let them walk in.

14 teams is too much, way too much.........

HI guys ,

I wanted to add my tupins worth...

As i come from Uk background i honestly think the league needs complete restructuring, the main difference in terms of football mat home and here is a few things; Firstly ,Structure and what i mean by this is the whole club structure each club having its own Ground , which is the only way the club can market there games and eventually provide themselves with an income.
Next The need to have a full compliment of Fully trained staff from Head coach to physio , who all have a role to play.
This will then lead onto each club having youth sides leading up to reserve team and then to pro but there has to be a scale . ie the players in the reserves should be close to pro but just needing a little more experience and help to get there and then this will also help the pro side if they have injury problems or need a player to cover for any reason.
Another thing is Finances from personal experience and from other players telling me there is sometimes problems with payment( and lets be honest it isn't big bucks) , Shortage of supplies when needed water ect and even sometimes shirts.
I honestly think what they should do is have a 12 team and with hearing there may be 3-3 more clubs it might improve the competition as long as they don't scrimp on finances. I also think the leagues should be fully linked so that bottom team is relegated and second bottom plays playoff with second team in super league this would increase competition and also give clubs that think they have the ambition a chance to try there luck.
My final point is the league need full marketing campain , let local school kids come for free, get the people to know the players, here in Trinidad and Tobago being a footballer seems like a nothing, but these are supposedly the best in the country from home. So lets give them a bit of support. Basically let everyone in Trinidad and Tobago come and enjoy the football, treat it like a fet or a party , in my opinion that's the only way the league will improve.
