Amauri to replace Luis Fabiano in friendly
Updated: January 31, 2009, 2:44 PM EST 8 comments SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) - Brazil coach Dunga has called up Juventus striker Amauri to replace injured Sevilla forward Luis Fabiano for an upcoming friendly against Italy, the Brazilian Football Confederation said Saturday on its Web site.

Internationals on FSC
 Tue., Feb. 10, 2:45 p.m. LIVE -
   Brazil vs. Italy (from London)

All times ET, subject to change.
The two national squads face off Feb.10 at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium in London.

Dunga's decision comes just days after he said he left Amauri off the roster because "he did not perform well in his last two matches and we think that the match against Italy would add too much pressure on him."

On Thursday, Fabiano ruptured two ligaments in his left knee in a quarter final game of Spain's Copa del Rey tournament.

Question is whether Amauri wants to play for Brazil.  His outward attitude seems to be one of indifference.  You often get that Brazilian reaction to players that went to Europe before they were household names in Brazil.  They still don't get the respect in Brazil sometimes, even after they make their name and light up Europe.  Elber is another man who deserved a call-up earlier than he did, but he left Brazil early too.

TURIN, Italy (AP) - Juventus president Giovanni Cobolli Gigli won't allow striker Amauri to play for Brazil in its friendly against Italy on Feb. 10.

The 28-year-old Amauri was a late call up by Brazil coach Dunga to replace Luis Fabiano for the match at Emirates Stadium in London.

"Amauri will not go to the national team. It is the club's decision," Cobolli Gigli said Sunday on the team's Web site. "For a start we haven't yet received notice of his call up and now we are outside the time limit.

"Myself and (chief executive Jean Claude) Blanc spoke about it and in the end decided that we couldn't permit the player to respond to the call. Juventus takes all the responsibility for this decision, but Amauri will stay here with us, at a time when we all need to stick together."

The decision leaves the path open for Amauri to play for Italy. The former Palermo attacker is set to qualify for an Italian passport this year and has been ambiguous over which team he would represent.

Amauri has always said he wants to play for Brazil first. He's never been ambiguous as the article states. He has practically begged Dunga for a call up and was using the Italian citizenship to try to force Dunga's hand. Dunga reacted badly, as can be expected since he is a stubborn goat. He publicly said he would pick Amauri and then ommitted him when the team list came in. Big big diss. He than went further to say that Amauri didn't look good in Juve's last few games. I think the two of them haven't even met, and already don't get on. So when Dunga picked him late as a replacement for L. Fabiano, Amauri probably got offended and now he is pulling an Anelka...refusing a call up because he doesn't think the coach really wants him. If Dunga kept his word and just picked him..Amauri would be there in a heartbeat. The whole Juve story is nonsense..cuz there are Italian players at Juve who are playing in the same game. Amauri just being bad mind...first time his true allegiance in any doubt

Amauri will end up playing for Italy.  Dunga has been dierespectful, if you ask me.  I know Brazil has talent, but there is always a tendency to slight players that left Brazil for Europe before they were household names.  This is another case of that.  Amauri should have been called up long before this.

Following this latest fiasco with Juve bannin d man, Amauri came out and send that he wants to play for Brazil, not Italy.
