TAMPA, FL -- The Puerto Rico Islanders announced that the core of the 2008 squad will be back for the upcoming season.
"We believe that the key to success to our successful 2008 season was the quality and unity that our players had on and off the field. This is what we are looking for in 2009 with all these returning players" said Islanders Vice-President Jorge Pierluisi.
"Most of these players have already reported to training camp under Head Coach Colin Clarke. Kendall Jageosingh is in international duty with the Trinidad and Tobago National team. Osei Telesford is recovering from an injury but should be back to training within the next couple of weeks. In addition, there are several players on trial trying to earn a spot in the Islanders roster" said Islanders President Andres Guillemard.
Among the players returning are league award winners Bill Gaudette (Goalkeeper of the Year), Cristian Arrieta (Defender of the Year) and Jonathan Steele, the USL First Division Most Valuable Player.
The Islanders are currently in Tampa, Florida in preparations for one of the most important matches (CONCACAF Champions League Quarterfinals) in the franchise history. The team will play Honduras' Marathon at Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium on February 26, 2009. In preparation for this match they will play DC United of the MLS on February 21st at 8pm at the Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium.
