South Korea has no problems with Venezuela Associated Press
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Venezuela has a roster full of big leaguers, South Korea just one.

Nevertheless, the reigning Olympic champions reached the finals of the second World Baseball Classic with ease Saturday night.

Cleveland Indians outfielder Choo Shin-Soo hit a three-run homer to cap a five-run first, Yoon Suk-Min allowed two runs in 6 1-3 innings, and South Korea beat mistake-prone Venezuela 10-2 at Dodger Stadium before an enthusiastic crowd of 43,378 that included Commissioner Bud Selig.

Kim Tae-Kyun added a two-run homer off loser Carlos Silva in the second for South Korea, which meets the winner of Sunday night's semifinal matchup between defending WBC champion Japan and the United States for the title on Monday night. Roy Oswalt is scheduled to pitch for the Americans against Daisuke Matsuzaka.

Oswalt, a member of the Olympic gold medal-winning team in the 2000 Olympics, is 1-0 in two WBC starts, allowing 11 hits and three runs in 7 2-3 innings.

Matsuzaka, who pitched six shutout innings against Cuba last Sunday, is 2-0, having allowed nine hits and two runs in 10 innings. He was 3-0 and selected tournament MVP in leading Japan to the inaugural WBC championship in 2006. The 28-year-old right-hander joined the Boston Red Sox two years ago.

The Japan-U.S. contest is a rematch of the bronze-medal game at last summer's Beijing Olympics, which the Americans won 8-4. Japan hasn't defeated the United States since the 2005 World Cup in the Netherlands. The Americans were eliminated 2-1 by Mexico in the second round of the first Classic after beating Japan 4-3 during pool play in Anaheim.

Yoon (2-0), a 22-year-old right-hander who went 14-5 with a 2.33 ERA for South Korea's KIA Tigers last year, scattered seven hits while walking one and striking out four. He allowed 13 hits and two runs in 16 innings with one walk and 13 strikeouts in four WBC outings.

Led by Miguel Cabrera, Magglio Ordonez, Bobby Abreu, Jose Lopez, Carlos Guillen, Melvin Mora and Ramon Hernandez, the Venezuelans had 12 homers and 36 extra-base hits in their first seven games and outscored the opposition 30-11 while winning their previous five, including two over Team USA.

That meant nothing against Yoon and the South Koreans, who put them away in the opening inning.

Silva (1-1) entered the semifinals having allowed just one run on 10 hits with one walk and six strikeouts in 11 innings over two WBC outings. But he didn't last long against the South Koreans, being chased after giving up six hits and seven runs, six earned, in 1 1-3 innings.

Lee Yongkyu walked to begin the game and Jeong Keunwoo reached base when right fielder Abreu dropped his fly fall for an error - one of five committed by Venezuela after it made five in seven previous games, six of them wins.

Kim Hyun-Soo followed with an RBI single and Kim Tae-Kyun singled to load the bases. After Lee Dae-Ho drove in a run with an RBI groundout, Choo hit an 0-1 pitch over the center field fence for a three-run homer - just his second hit in 11 WBC at-bats. Choo hit .309 with 14 homers and 66 RBIs in 94 games with the Indians last season.

Kim Hyun-Soo hit a one-out double in the second and Kim Tae-Kyum followed with his third homer of the Classic, making it 7-0 and chasing Silva, who went 5-14 with a 6.46 ERA for the Seattle Mariners last year.

Venezuela got a run in the third on one-out singles by Marco Scutaro, Endy Chavez and Mora before Yoon retired Abreu on a grounder and Cabrera on a liner to left to end the inning.

South Korea made it 8-1 with an unearned run off Enrique Gonzalez in the fourth when first baseman Cabrera was unable to handle a pickoff throw from catcher Hernandez for an error, allowing Ko Young Min to score from second. Gonzalez allowed one hit and the unearned run in 3 2-3 innings.

South Korea shortstop Park Ki-Hyuk robbed Hernandez leading off the fifth, diving to snare his grounder up the middle before scrambling to his feet and throwing to first just in time.

South Korea extended its lead to 10-1 off Victor Zambrano in the sixth on an RBI single by Lee Dae-Ho and a sacrifice fly by Choi Jeong. Kim Hyun-Soo went 3-for-3 with a walk before coming out for a pinch runner in the inning.

Guillen opened the seventh by hitting an 0-2 pitch from Yoon into the right-center field pavilion for his third WBC homer to complete the scoring. Guillen, Abreu and Hernandez had two hits each for Venezuela, who had a total of nine off five pitchers. South Korea had 10 hits off six pitchers.

Japan has a date with Korea in final
Backed by five-run fourth, country will defend Classic title Monday

LOS ANGELES -- Japan is headed to the World Baseball Classic final yet again.
Japan used a five-run fourth inning keyed by a critical error by USA second baseman Brian Roberts, and Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched 4 2/3 effective innings to guide Japan to a 9-4 win over the United States in front of 43,630 at Dodger Stadium on Sunday. It was the second-largest crowd in Classic history and the biggest on U.S. soil.

Now, Japan is set to face Korea for the fifth time in the tournament, but this time it's for the championship on Monday night at 9 ET.

Japan actually found itself down, 2-1, entering the bottom of the fourth inning after Roberts led off the game with a home run and David Wright hit an RBI double in the third.

But Japan's Atsunori Inaba led off the fourth with a single just past the glove of Roberts, and Michihiro Ogasawara followed with a single to center field.

And then Kosuke Fukudome hit what appeared to be a double-play ground ball to second base, but Roberts muffed the play and everyone was safe.

Kenji Johjima then hit a sacrifice fly before Akinori Iwamura tripled home a run. Japan's Munenori Kawasaki followed with an RBI single and scored on a double by Hiroyuki Nakajima.

United States starter Roy Oswalt was removed after Nakajima's double, but the damage was already done. Oswalt lasted just 3 2/3 innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits.

Meanwhile, Matsuzaka didn't have his best stuff, but he got the job done for Japan. Dice-K struggled with his control as 41 of his 98 pitches were for balls, but he got himself out of jams and walked just three batters. In all, Matsuzaka allowed two runs on five hits, while allowing five hits and striking out four.

In the U.S.'s eighth, Mark DeRosa hit a double down the left-field line that scored two runs. But that was as close as the Americans would get on Sunday, as Japan scored three runs in its half of the eighth to put it away.

Japan will now defend its 2006 World Baseball Classic title against Korea, which won the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics and is the nation's biggest rival.

Ichiro delivers as Japan wins WBC titleAssociated Press
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Seattle Mariners star Ichiro Suzuki hit a two-out, two-run single in the top of the 10th inning as defending champion Japan beat reigning Olympic champion South Korea 5-3 Monday night to win its second straight World Baseball Classic title.

The Japanese won the inaugural tournament three years ago, beating Cuba 10-6 in the finals at San Diego.

"Well, we represented Japan," manager Tatsunori Hara said through a translator. "Day-by-day, the team evolved.

"I felt like we could have scored more, but it was difficult for us to earn runs with the Korean defense."

Japan, which outhit South Korea 15-5, blew several scoring opportunities and stranded 14 runners.

"We became No. 1 in the world," Hara said. "The fact that two Asian countries were able to play against each other in the finals is something that we and the Koreans can be proud of."

The 35-year-old Suzuki, an eight-time All Star, is a .331 hitter in eight seasons with the Mariners after starring in Japan. He tied Lou Gehrig's major league record with his eighth straight season of at least 100 runs and 200 hits last year.

South Korea had tied the game at 3 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth on Lee Bum-ho's run-scoring single off Japanese closer Yu Darvish (2-1), who got in trouble by issuing one-out walks to Kim Hyun-soo and Kim Tae-kyun, the 3-4 hitters in the lineup.

Darvish struck out Choo Shin-soo before Lee lined a 1-1 pitch into left field, with pinch-runner Lee Jong-wook scoring easily from second.

Seiichi Uchikawa opened the 10th with a single, was sacrificed to second and took third on a single by Akinori Iwamura. After pinch-hitter Munenori Kawasaki popped out, Iwamura took second on defensive indifference.

Suzuki managed to foul off a pitch after it had bounced before lining the eighth pitch of the at-bat from Lim Chang-yong (1-1) to center for his fourth hit. The Mariners' star entered with a .211 average and three RBIs in eight previous games.

Given the lead, Darvish worked around a leadoff walk to retire South Korea in the bottom of the 10th, setting off a wild celebration when he struck out Lee Jin-young to end the four-hour game.

"Although there is regret, we did our best," South Korean manager Kim In-sik said through an interpreter. "I myself have no dissatisfaction. We kept coming back."

Asked about allowing Suzuki to hit with two runners in scoring position instead of walking him intentionally, Kim replied: "I don't know why the pitcher tried to pitch directly to Ichiro. I did not understand. In the end, it did not work out for us. The pitcher and the catcher did not communicate well in terms of their signs. And in the end, that led to the hit by (Suzuki). Of course I have a regret as to what happened."

Suzuki said he wasn't surprised he wasn't walked.

"There was (Hiroyuki) Nakajima (on deck), and he is a batter you wanted to avoid," Suzuki said. "So there was a possibility for the bases to be loaded, and I knew they would want to fight against that, so I wasn't at all surprised."

After the medal presentations, the champions posed with the trophy behind a large Japanese flag that was laid out on the field, and then carried it around the entire stadium. Japanese fans stuck around Dodger Stadium for nearly an hour celebrating.

Japan's Daisuke Matsuzaka won the MVP award for the second straight time after going 3-0 - the same record he had in the first WBC. The Boston Red Sox right-hander had a 2.45 ERA in 14 2-3 innings over three starts.

The game was the latest in an intense rivalry between the Asian powerhouses - a Far East version of a Yankees-Red Sox matchup. They split four previous games in this 16-team tournament, with Japan's 6-2 triumph in San Diego last Thursday giving it the Pool 1 title in the second round.

Two days earlier, South Korea won 4-1, and its players planted the nation's flag on the mound afterward - not the first time that's happened. Suzuki made sure it wouldn't happen again on this night.
South Korea beat Japan twice at the Beijing Olympics en route to the gold medal. The South Koreans also beat Japan twice in the inaugural WBC three years ago before the Japanese won their semifinal matchup. South Korea beat Japan 3-1 to win the bronze medal in the 2000 Olympics after losing to its rival 8-0 earlier in the Games.

Japan took a 3-1 lead Monday with single runs in the seventh and eighth. Yasuyuki Kataoka singled off Jong Hyun-wook to open the seventh, stole second, took third on Suzuki's bunt single and scored on Nakajima's single. Iwamura's sacrifice fly off Ryu Hyun-jin in the eighth gave the Japanese a two-run lead.

South Korea got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Lee doubled, took third on an infield out and scored on pinch hitter Lee Dae-ho's sacrifice fly.

Hisashi Iwakuma worked 7 2-3 innings and allowed just four hits and two runs. He walked two, struck out six and threw 97 pitches - three shy of the maximum.

Japan took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run off Bong Jung-keun in the third on Michihiro Ogasawara's RBI single. Choo tied the game by hitting a 1-1 pitch from Iwakuma over the center field fence to open the fifth for his second homer in two games.

Bong allowed six hits and one run in four-plus innings with three walks and one strikeout while using 94 pitches. A 28-year-old left-hander who pitched in 48 big-league games with Atlanta and Cincinnati from 2002-04, he beat Japan twice earlier in the WBC.

"I believe that we were the two best teams in the world," Bong said. "Asia is best, world best, and Korea and Japan were able to fight until the end. It was a great glory for all of us."

South Korea reached the final by beating Venezuela 10-2 and Japan earned its berth by topping the U.S. 9-4 Sunday night.

the crowd in dodger stadium was great and the koreans had the stadium in seoul full with people just watching it on a big screen.

both countries were really passionate about it. until the US team brings that kind of passion to the tournament, they ent deserve to win it
