El Salvador players go on strike
by Paul Kennedy (socceramerica.com)

[WORLD CUP 2010 QUALIFYING] Less than two weeks before it hosts the United States in the Hexagonal, El Salvador has been rocked by a player strike. Twenty-three of 24 players -- all but U.S. resident Edwin Miranda -- walked out of training on Tuesday afternoon to protest the non-payment of bonuses for having qualified for the Hexagonal, the final round of qualifying.

The players attended the first of two practices scheduled for Tuesday in San Salvador and then left their hotel to return to their league clubs.

El Salvador's Mexican coach Carlos de los Cobos called the situation "lamentable." El Salvador President Elias Antonio Saca, a big soccer fan, was reportedly ready to see how to resolve the dispute.

The Salvadoran federation had reportedly set aside $800,000 to cover the expenses of World Cup qualifying.

The El Salvador-USA game will take place March 28 in San Salvador. El Salvador opened at home against Trinidad & Tobago and rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to tie the Soca Warriors, 2-2, on two late goals.

Yeah, the problem appears to be with the federation only, and not the presidential 10K incentive. As I type this, a group of players and an administrative body are supposed to be in a meeting to resolve the situation. Apparently, a statement will be issued in about an hour or so.

El Salvador players end holdout
by Paul Kennedy, socceramerica.com

[HEXAGONAL] Members of El Salvador's national team resumed training on Monday in San Salvador for Saturday's critical World Cup 2010 qualifier against the USA at Estadio Cuscatlan (TV: ESPN2, TeleFutura, live, 9 pm ET). Their Mexican coach, Carlos De los Cobos, admitted that valuable training was lost when the players went on strike last week in a dispute over unpaid bonuses, but he added they have a week to get ready for the game against the Americans.

Having opened at home with a 2-2 tie against Trinidad & Tobago, the Salvadorans can't afford to lose to the Americans and open with only one point in two games at home.

The only newcomer to the training squad is former USL-2 (Real Maryland) player Dennis Alas, who returned to El Salvador and plays for Luis Angel Firpo.

The Salvadoran squad includes recent New York Red Bulls signee Alfredo Pacheco. Also selected were former Los Angeles area prep star Ivan Miranda and former D.C. United player Eliseo Quintanilla.

Pacheco is the only player currently affiliated with a foreign club.

After the U.S. game, El Salvador travels to Costa Rica to face the Ticos on April 1.

EL SALVADOR ROSTER:
Goalkeepers: Juan Jose Gomez (Luis Angel Firpo), Luis Castro (FAS), Miguel Montes (Nejapa).
Defenders: Manuel Salazar (Luis Angel Firpo), Marvin Gonzalez (FAS), Alfredo Pacheco (New York Red Bulls), Alexander Escobar (Metapan), Carlos Monteagudo (Luis Angel Firpo), Mardoqueo Enriquez (FAS), Deris Umanzor (Aguila), Luis Hernandez (Aguila).
Midfielders: Dennis Alas (Firpo), Cristian Castillo (Alianza), Ramon Sanchez (Alianza), William Torres (Aguila), Edwin Miranda (free agent), Julio Martinez (Metapan), Oscar Jimenez (Alianza), Osael Romero (Vista Hermosa).
Forwards: Salvador Coreas (Vista Hermosa), Rudis Corrales (Aguila), Eliseo Quintanilla (Aguila), Lester Blanco (Chalatenango), Carlos Ayala (Chalatenango), Rodolfo Zelaya (Alianza).
