T&T U-17s head for final cut.
« on: April 07, 2009, 10:05:42 PM »
U-17s head into final leg of preparations before Mexico.
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

National Under 17 Football Team head coach Anton Corneal will oversee a final week of preparation on local shores before the final team jets off to Mexico to contest the CONCACAF Final round of qualification for the FIFA Under 17 World Championship in Nigeria.

The T&T Under 17 team will begin its final round campaign against hosts Mexico on April 22 at the 33,000-capacity Estadio Caliente in Tijuana. They then take on Costa Rica on April 24 and Guatemala two days later

The top two teams from each group will advance to the World Championship in Nigeria from October 24 to November 15, 2009. The other group being contested also in Mexico includes USA, Honduras, Canada and Cuba.

The final T&T squad will be named after the upcoming live in training camp at the Dr Joao Havelange Centre of Excellence which runs from April 9-12.

Some 27 players are currently in the squad including striker Jerrel Britto who recently had another training stint in England as well as promising W Connection midfielder Shahdon Winchester who also had a stint in Portugal. Also in the squad is midfielder Ryan McLeod who is attached to MLS club Toronto FC’s Academy and US-based forward Malcolm Manswell of Baltimore Bays.

“Overall we have worked very hard utilizing all the resources available to us so far in the build up to this tournament,” team manager Christo Gouveia told TTFF Media.

“The team has grown tremendously but of course everything will show depending on the results in Mexico. The training camp in Colombia earlier this year oved to be very useful and we expect that the boys will peak in time for the tournament. Coach Anton was able to qualify the previous Under 17 team to South Korea and the same group has since qualified for the Under 20 World Cup in Egypt.

It means that he has the right recipe for working with  these teams and we are hopeful that by the grace of God along with countless hours of hard work and commitment will see us through all the way this time around as well,” added Gouveia who was also manager of the T&T U-17 team which participated at the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Championship in South Korea.

They get Mexico under 18, Brazil-U17, Chelsea U18 and Colombian club teams. But no CONCACAF peer group teams this year. They played most of their matches off Trinidad soil so they are less familiar to us than the previous team. But you COULD make the argument that they have been given better opposition.
