Avery John to DC United?
« on: April 17, 2009, 07:59:45 PM »
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/soccerinsider/2009/04/matchnight_5_united-revolution.html?wprss=soccerinsider

Meanwhile, sources tell the Insider that United has taken an interest in veteran defender Avery John. GM Dave Kasper said he had no comment. John, 33, played for the Revs between 2004 and 2007, and was with USL1 Miami last year. He starred at American University in Washington and has 65 caps for T&T, including a 2006 World Cup appearance that ended with a red card. The Revs hold his MLS rights (they never waived him and did offer him a contract last year) so a trade would have to be consumated. If John joins United, a current player will have to be waived or traded. Hmmm.....[UPDATE: The trade is pending league approval -- for a draft pick, I believe. My guess is that Thabiso Khumalo is gone from the senior roster.]

Monday should also be the day the trade that sends the rights to veteran defender Avery John from New England to United is finalized. We will then await DCU's subsequent roster move. Peters? Khumalo? Doe?

http://news.bostonherald.com/sports/soccer/revolution/view/2009_04_18_Late_goal_costs_Revs/srvc=home&position=also
The Revs are expected to trade the rights to former defender Avery John to United for a conditional draft pick, according to league sources. . . .

Oh, joy, red cards.

WTF kind of stupid ass move is this? Avery John sucks!

Eastern Bear
Well, this is a wasted draft pick whatever it is.

Marco10
Avery John is a much tougher, more instictually defensive minded, and more vesatile defender overall, version of Marc Burch. Why exactly is this a bad thing? Seriously, I understand the angst as John was a bit of a hack in NE. BUt I seem to recall them having a hack named Aunger, who was universally decried when he came here as a stop gap measure, but magically became a fan favorite and extremely useful player.

Not saying the guy is actually as good as the baby faced assasin, nor will he ever skip away from carnage so elegantly, no one could. But, the dude has some serious skills that DC United currently lacks. Most among them is a committment to actually defending with some heavy artillery. It's nice to have slap happy whiners with tremendous skills, but having a guy who lets his shin pads do the talking is very important commodity. Plus, he allows DC to play a 3-5-2or 4-4-2 even if both starting central players are hurt. That's a lot of flexibilitly.

Just sayin' give this guy a chance before hammering him out of hand. The doctor was never going to play much this year anyway now that Pontius is obviously so superior.

URwormfood
MR. John is a hard-ass.....ROCK-EM!

Good choice!

La Barra Blonde
Knowing nothing about Mr. Avery except his age, if he comes in, DCU would have 5 starters on the field over the age of 30.

Is anyone else worried about this?

Fiction.

MLS ain't even at Championship level. Play them 10 times, they might win a couple. But in the end, a shitty Prem team will usually handle a League 1 team comfortably.

DC defender Bryan Namoff talks about Avery:
"He's just kind of being introduced to the whole team and allowing himself to get back into day-to-day training and trying to get his fitness back. He’s an experienced player and is going to be good addition to our team. Just from seeing him with New England, he’s athletic, he’s big, fast, strong. He has all the capabilities of coming in as an addition to the depth in our back."

Forward Francis Doe was not included on the game-day roster, an ominous sign as the club prepares to make room for veteran defender Avery John. Doe's $80,000 contract, considerably higher than most reserves, might become a factor. . . . Midfielder Thabiso Khumalo, another player in danger of being let go, made his first appearance in a month and played all 90 minutes.
