EPL Transfer Busts 2008/ 2009
« on: April 22, 2009, 06:58:40 AM »
so far the high profile ones come to mind, given the expectations:

Berbatov - Manchester United - 30M
Keane - Liverpool - 20M
Deco - Chelsea - 8M
Robinho - Manchester City - 32M

Berbatov has been described as languid, lazy and disinterested. Man U fans seem to have had enough and are calling for blood.

Keane couldn't even get a pigeon sweat for Liverpool which begs the question, why was he bought in the first place? The IOSS episode is funny but true.

Deco has struggled with injury, and when he's been fit seems out of place amidst Lampard and Ballack. Definitely falls below expectations. Not as expensive as the others, and considered a bargain - but no production means low grade.

Robinho: for the most expensive player, you expect magic on the field. Hot and cold performances all season long, and not able to dominate defences as he was expected to.
throw parties, not grenades.

Robinho is most expensive cuz is ManCity who overpaid cuz they have way too much money to spend. Looked great up until December and had 11 EPL goals through half the season. Suffered from a dip in form in 2009 and pulled a couple AWOL stints. HE played injured for some of that time, but also sometimes acts like he doesn't want to be there. Given that Stephen Ireland is ManCity's best player this season..one can argue they expected more from Robinho..but Ireland's ascension is in part to all the attention the Brazilian gets. All in all 12 EPL goals in 27 appearances, in his first season is a fine return. Robinho has looked better, but he is faaaar from a bust. The top scorers in the EPL is are Anelka and Ronaldo with 15, playing in better sides, and have a lot more experience in the league. Does not belong on that list imo.

Frazier Campbell. Dat kind of rough  :-\ He is a ManU youth product who is still only 21. Been loaned out for all his 'senior' career to get experience and has done pretty well. What expectations did anyone have of this youth to label him a bust already?

Saha is Saha. Injured almost all the time, but brilliant went fit. Everton knew what they were buying and he's scored some crucial goals for them and looked good when on the field....which is almost never. But I really think Everton knew what they were getting into

Deco played well under Scolari before being injured.  Since returning he hasn't really fit in but I wouldn't label him a bust just yet.  And especially at 8M nah not a bust at all.

Robinho is only a bust because of the amount MC paid for him.  Had CFC gotten him I believe he would have been more productive.  But based on the pricetag I'll agree.

Berba isn't any different as a player for ManUre than he always been so the fans are idiots.  I always wondered why MUFC decided to pursue him when they play at such a fast pace.  Berba always looks like he is moving in slow motion.  Bust I wouldn't say that because that would be insinuating that he hasn't been up to billing.

Keane was simply a Jackass move by Liverpuke!  The player can't be blamed for that so I think much like Man U the club failed in that initiative and not the player.

Funny that one of the best striking partnerships (Keane/Berbatov) from last year are busts this year.

In Robbie's defense he was never given a fair chance at Liverpool.

Berba's is a player that will be invisible for 80 mins and then dazzle you for 10.  His main problem is that English fans are @$$holes....they'll crucify you for a languid style of play regardless of what you do on the pitch.  There a similar sentiment among some fans at Spurs as well and he was brilliant last year.  I recall Swansea fans complaining about Scotty when he first got there as well.

We'll be happy to take him back next year if ManU doesn't want him (like we did Keane and Defoe ;D)

BTW Frazier Campbell came over on loan from ManU since we were short strikers after selling them all :-\
