Ferdinand, Jackson cop MVP awards in T&T Cup

Shaquille Ferdinand and Anselm Jackson of San Juan Jabloteh’s winning Under-15 and Under 17 teams were voted the Most Valuable Players (MVP) in their respective categories in the eighth Edition of the T&T Cup. The Jabloteh juniors are definitely taking a page from their seniors as this marks the third Year that the club has won the Under-15 title.
W Connection placed second and Joe Public third in the U-15 divisions, while St Ann’s Rangers and Joe Public were second and third respectively in the U-17 category. Rodan Lee-Wing, a hearing impaired player from South East Port-of-Spain, received a special award. Speaking at a simple ceremony at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Coordinator Alvin Corneal said this was probably the most fruitful year as some 153 teams from throughout T&T participated.
He added that this tournament serves as the nurturing ground for future T&T players, and hence there was a need for its continuation. Corneal said a number of the present Under 17 and Under 20 national players had passed through the programme and this was testimony that something good was coming out of the tournament.
Meanwhile, Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Gary Hunt said he recognised the importance of development programmes in sport. He added: “Building a critical mass of players who can move on to professional sport while teaching young persons about discipline and fair play is invaluable to our nation’s continued growth as a leader in the sporting world.”
