Jones turns back on Germany to play for USA

Schalke midfielder Jermaine Jones will not play for the German national team and will in future represent the United States.

The 27-year-old has made three appearances for Germany but since all three of his caps came in friendly matches, he is still permitted to represent another nation.

As well as holding German citizenship, Jones also has a US passport and has therefore decided to switch allegiances.

Jones played against Austria on February 6, 2008, Belarus on May 27, 2008 and England on November 19, 2008, but according to the new constitution agreed by football's world governing body FIFA recently, this does not preclude him from a change.

So they really change the rule... my apologies to triniman and others...

It look like Findley could play..

No timetable on Jones switch

The agent for Schalke midfielder Jermaine Jones says the paperwork is already be filled out for his client's request to change international  allegiance from Germany to the United States, but does not know how long it will take before world governing body of soccer returns with a ruling.

The 27-year old Bundesliga standout, who is Frankfurt-born of an American father, played three friendlies for Die Mannschaft before missing the Euro 2008 squad cut.

Jones Door Opens August 2nd
By: Greg Seltzer (Soccer365)

Soccer365 has confirmed that Schalke midfielder Jermaine Jones will be eligible to suit up for the U.S. National Team after August 2nd, provided his international switch has been approved by the FIFA's Player Status Committee.

U.S. Soccer was actually told by a FIFA employee that Jones could not be eligible until October 1st, but a spokesman for the world governing body surmised that the particular messenger might have momentarily confused the international association rule with a club transfer change regarding youth players approved the same day that does not go into effect until that autumn day.

"I can confirm that the decision to lift the age limit in Article 18 of the Regulations Governing the Application of the FIFA Statutes will come into effect 60 days after it was taken at the 59th FIFA Congress," he told Soccer365 on Tuesday afternoon.

The 27-year old Jones, who took his decision to trade his Germany shirt for U.S. colors after Article 18 was stripped of the 21-year old age limit for international switches was ratified with 58% of the vote on June 3rd, is waiting to learn when his Player Status Committee case hearing will occur.

If the central midfielder's swap is given the green light, he would first be available for coach Bob Bradley's selection when the USMNT visits arch nemesis Mexico at Azteca on August 12th.

The stars are aligning. Good for the game, good for him. Now it's left to be seen whether he receives a few token caps only to return to the international wilderness, or whether he pulls a Dooley (btw, also played for Schalke).

A few "token caps" is out of the question. Jones was rated by Kicker magazine as the 4th best midfielder in the entire Bundesliga last season:

More like "instant starter".

Tom Dooley was not a great player but he fitted into the US team perfectly at that time. He played a defensive mid-filed and was good in the air. He was a tall guy. He play quite a few games for the US. He even scored against TT in VA in the WC. Jones ain't no token player. He is a damn good player. I think that is a lost for Germany.

Not really a loss fuh Germany as they always have quality players coming up and a very strong Midfield that will still be anchored for a few more years by Ballack.  He wasn't in prime position to steal starters minutes from any of the incumbents so as good as he is the US is his best chance to get some international sweat.

Hmmm.

First, lehme state ... there is a difference between token player and token caps. Clear!

Second, his introduction could originate from the bench. Won't be an indictment of the player if that occurs. The player's ability is well-known.

Ultimately, however, the quantum of caps he ends up with will depend on much more than his ability. Token wasn't used as a gratuity ...
