Digicel Kick Start Clinic arrives in Trinidad and Tobago
CNC reports.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad -- The Digicel Kick Start Clinics, which have been touring the Caribbean, have landed at their penultimate destination - the Twin Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

On Thursday, Head Coach of the Kick Start Clinics John Barnes joined Trinidad and Tobago International stars, Jason Scotland and Denis Lawrence, on a visit to the Caledonia AIA youth teams at the Morvant Recreation ground.

Barnes took the opportunity to capture the children’s attention first with a motivational talk aimed at encouraging them always to aim for excellence followed by a fun game of “King of the Ring”.

He explained: “My objective was simple – to encourage the youngsters to never give up and to show how, through football, they can make a difference in their own lives, their community, country and the world.”

From as early 8 am on this Corpus Christie Holiday in Trinidad, the Morvant Recreation ground was buzzing with excitement as the children – both boys and girls ranging from ages 5 to 16 - began gathering for what was expected to be a day of enjoyable and unforgettable football fun. They were not disappointed.

Caledonia AIA Technical Director, Jamaal Shabazz, commended Digicel for its efforts in bringing football stars to meet and interact with the youth in their own neighborhood.

“It means a lot to this community that Digicel has brought these positive role models to meet their upcoming football stars. The Digicel Kick Start Clinic initiative is one that creates once in a lifetime opportunities for our talent – and I really feel that Digicel was thinking outside the box by bringing these stars to meet these eager young fans.”

He continued: “The presence of an international football legend like John Barnes; alongside our very own Soca Warriors, Jason Scotland and Denis Lawrence, will have a lasting positive impact on these children; it is a day that this community will talk about for years to come.”

The Trinidad leg of the Digicel Kick Start Clinics kicked off on Thursday afternoon at the St Mary’s School ground, St Clair, with the Trinidad and Tobago under-17 team being taken through their paces by Barnes with the assistance of four local coaches.

The young players will be showcasing their skills in the hope of catching the eye of their mentor and being one of the eight players selected to train at Sunderland AFC in England in August.

Barnes said of the tour so far: “The talent in the Caribbean has been really amazing and it is matched by the enthusiasm and genuine love for the game by the players in each and every country so far. I am expecting an impressive display from the youth here, especially as Trinidad & Tobago is known internationally for its football.”

Whatever you do, do it to the purpose; do it thoroughly, not superficially. Go to the bottom of things. Any thing half done, or half known, is in my mind, neither done nor known at all. Nay, worse, for it often misleads.

‘Quality and attitude of players was very good’ – John Barnes

Port of Spain, Trinidad: The penultimate leg of the Digicel Kick Start Clinics in the Caribbean concluded on Friday evening at the St. Mary’s Grounds, Port of Spain, with the Digicel Kick Start Clinics Under 17 team defeating a combined Pro League Under 17 side 3-2 in an exciting match.

Digicel Kick Start Clinics Head Coach, John Barnes, said that the Trinidad leg of the Clinics was very good. “The quality of football was very good and regardless of whether anyone here is selected to go to Sunderland, the boys showed great talent and an excellent attitude.”

It was a very competitive match with some members of the Pro League team having played on the national Under 17 for Trinidad and Tobago which provided great opposition for the Digicel Kick Start team.

Barnes, an energetic and hard working individual said that the philosophy he is trying to instill in these talented young footballers is one of hard work and discipline.

“The boys have learnt a lot of new drills over the last two days – some of which they may take with them back to their clubs, but what I really hope is that from everything they’ve learnt, they will pay particular attention to the mental discipline required for this game. I hope they will take what I have shared with them and that these qualities and attributes stay with them.”

Sponsorship and PR Manager for Digicel Trinidad and Tobago, Marita Laurent, said: “It was a great opportunity for the national Under 17 team to take part in the Digicel Kick Start Clinics. John Barnes also visited several other communities while he was here in Trinidad to speak to our talented young footballers about life as a professional player.”

Next stop for the Digicel Kick Start Clinics is St. Kitts & Nevis, where the excitement for the final leg of the Clinics has been building over the last few weeks. Not only are St. Kitts and Nevis’ Under 16 players bracing themselves for two days packed with excitement under the guidance of John Barnes, but equally so, players from Jamaica, Barbados, Suriname, Haiti and Trinidad will be waiting to see who John Barnes selects to spend one week training at Sunderland AFC in September.

The Digicel Kick Start Clinics will be heading to Central America for the first time in August, where Clinics will be held in Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras and El Salvador. The six best players will be selected to train with Liverpool FC in October for a week
