Carlos “The Rolls Royce” Edwards

With the arrival of Sunderland’s summer reinforcements Carlos found himself relegated to the Black Cats bench, more often than not in favour of Steed Malbranque. Though he featured in their season opener against Liverpool, it soon became apparent that he did not have Roy Keane’s confidence and he was loaned out to Mick McCarthy’s Championship division team Wolverhampton Wanderers in October. He would play 6 games with the Wolves, and seemed to regain some confidence and fitness in a period in which he would be directly involved in four goals. His industry was noticed by Keane who recalled him to the Stadium of light in late November. However, his one appearance after his recall would prove to be his last game under Keane as the latter resigned at the end of November after a run of only 15 points gained in 16 games.
Under caretaker, and then full manager Ricky Sbragia, Edwards would play a regular, if not secondary role in the Black Cats team, often entering as a subsitute for Malbranque or Andy Reid, in a team that struggled, partcularly in the last two months of the seaon, and which only avoided relegation on the last day of the season.
While Edwards escaped being transfer listed, with new manager Steve Bruce at the helm, it is still uncertain if he will remain a Sunderland player, amid rumors of interest from McCarthy’s newly promoted Wolves and Keane’s Ipswich town.

Kenwyne Jones

Due to his England friendly knee injury, KJ did not regain the field until mid-October by which time he was already facing competition from new recruit Djibril Cisse for the striker position. However, his place seemed secure as Roy Keane, and then his replacement Ricky Sbragia opted to play both strikers together at most times.
Kenwyne would open his account in a Carling cup loss to Blackburn Rovers and then follow that up with another one three days later against the same opponent in the Premier League. He then scored three goals in back to back games against West Brom and Hull City in December, and opened 2009 with back to back goals – in an FA cup win over Bolton followed by a league draw with Middlesbrough. Three games later, he scored the winner over Fulham, followed by a goal and an assist against Stoke two games after that.
However, as Sunderland went cold in the last two months of the league, KJ’s productivity fell. The team would score only 7 goals of their 13 last games, (and not score in 6) and would pick up only one win during this time. Three of them would come from KJ, in an April loss to champions Manchester United, and back to back end of season losses against Portsmouth and Chelsea. Though not contributing any points to the Sunderland cause, they would be enough to allow him to surpass his previous year’s premiership tally, overtake Cisse in the overall club stats and reignite the interest of Harry Redknapp - now at Tottenham - over the summer.

Out with a fractured cheekbone sustained in a pre season-friendly Yorke would not take the field for the Black Cats until October, where he put in a man of the match performance in a 1-1 draw with Arsenal. He started three of four games in October, but the return of Kenwyne Jones from injury encouraged Roy Keane to sacrifice him to move from a 4-5-1 to a 4-4-2 in November. With Keane’s replacement by Sbragia in late November, the old man was definitively relegated to the bench, despite starting Sbragia’s first match against Manchester United at Old Trafford. The T&T captain would only make two substitute appearances for the rest of the season – an FA cup win over Blackburn and a late appearance against Manchester United. In what appears to be his last season at this level - he was released by Sunderland in June - it is somewhat fitting that his last two league appearances both came at the club where he made his name, Manchester Utd.

2008-2009 MS1Falkirk9/2018320410300200

Despite starting the first two games of the season against Rangers and Hibs, it quickly became apparent that the Little Magician either lacked the legs or the desire to pursue the inevitable relegation battle that would await Falkirk this season. Although he would make a crucial return to the Trinidad and Tobago national team in October, scoring a vital goal in the process, his player-assistant coach role would only be a precursor for a more important responsibility within the national team set up, and he would part ways with Falkirk amiicaby at the end of the year. In April of 2009, he was given full responsibility for the Soca Warriors after the resignation of Francisco Maturana.

Darryl continued his globe trotting ways, signing with Denizlispor in Turkey, after being released from Sparta Rotterdam. He opened his account with a brace in his second match and never looked back, netting another in September, four in three games in November, once in December, and two in back to back games in February, to help Denizlispor just avoid relegation from the Turkish Superliga. Despite this form, he has been conspicuously absent from the national team setup since scoring in Bermuda in June of last year.

2008-2009 GE1/E2Hull/Leicester5/2936044422000200

After signing for newly promoted Hull City during the summer, it was somewhat disheartening to read articles several months later quoting Tony Warner as stating that if he had known he was going to end up being Hull’s third goalkeeper he would not have put pen to paper. In fact, he would feature in one match for Hull up until March – a 2-0 FA cup win over Millwall – before being loaned to Leicester City. He would play three games for the Championship club before being benched for the final four games of the season. Tony ‘Bonus’ next destination is, as of now, still unknown.

Khaleem Hyland
Eight months after Portmouth’s much touted interest in him, Khaleem Hyland finally signed with a professional club overseas, Zulte Waregem of the Belgian Juliper League. The rising star played 8 games for Waregem before the league ended , mainly as a starter, and confirmed his rising stock on the national team with a World Cup qualifying goal against Honduras.

Jamal Gay
The former El Dorado schoolboy signed a three and a half year contract in February with Rot Weiss Oberhausen of the German 2nd division. He would play 2 minutes before a muscle tear sustained in training would put him out off commission. His return in March was then postponed by a second injury that hampers his preparation for the Under 20 world cup.

Chris “Me Mum” Birchall

2008-2009ME2/E3Coventry/Carlisle/Brighton15/47651741133502300

Not in the manager’s plans at Coventry, Birchall still managed to return to the national team set up after his involuntary hiatus. After an uneventful loan spell to League One’s Carlisle in December, he would be transferred to another league one club, Brighton and Hove Albion on a six month contract. Although initially in Brighton’s good books, reported interest by the MLS’ LA Galaxy threw a spanner in the works, and Chris would be relegated to the second team for the remainder of the season. He has since agreed terms with the LA Galaxy and will be an official Galaxy player when the MLS transfer window opens on the 15th of July.

Stern John

2008-2009 FE2Southampton/BristolCity39/4316031753412129321410

By any standards, including his particularly high personal one, Stern John had a poor season. After scoring twice in two games against Bermuda to take the Soca Warriors through, he returned to a Southampton side almost unrecognisable from its previous season’s incarnation. He never really fit into the new young side with its new Dutch coach and philosophy, and only scored one Carling Cup goal in nine games.
He was later loaned out at the end of October to Championship rivals Bristol City, as the financially struggling Saints could not afford to keep him on their books. He started brightly enough with his first goal coming in his third match, and a second 5 games later, in two losses to Reading and Ipswich, but by the New Year, it was clear that he was not performing as expected.
It was hoped that the arrival of his former Coventry City strike partner Dele Adebola in the January transfer window would allow Bristol City to recreate the awesome tandem that they had built within the Sky Blues, but more often than not they would not start together and Stern ended up coming on as a sub for a younger striker. By April, he was no longer even playing, and he has since been released by his parent club, Southampton, now flirting with administration, although he is still training with them pending finalisation of a deal with a new club.
An ill advised decision to take (and atrociously miss) a penalty kick in Trinidad and Tobago’s first final round World Cup qualifier against El Salvador in February has endeared him even less to the usually difficult Soca Warrior fans.
He will need to start the new season on a flyer – and hopefully against El Salvador - if he is to redeem himself and regain his volatile confidence levels.

Colin Samuel

2008-2009 MS2St.Johnstone30/321737199291111 760910

Colin signed his return to Scotland with a bang, scoring a goal in the season opener versus Ross County after coming on after an early injury. 5 games later in September, he was at it again banging in two against the same team to reverse the 1-2 scoreline of July and spark his team on a 21 game unbeaten streak in the league. Barring injuries, he would make regular appearances for the Saints, sometimes as a starter, sometimes from the bench. Two months later in November he popped up again to score against Ross County one minute after coming on as a late substitute. The fourth tie against Ross in January was postponed because of frozen weather until February, when surprisingly Colin would not score despite playing the entire game. Ironically though, he scored in his very next game on Valentine’s day against Livingston, two minutes after entering. He would miss three games through a niggling injury thereafter, but sparked his return with a brace against Airdrie and would start every game until the end of the season, with the exception of the last one when promotion was already gained.
In June, Colin returned to the national team, signing his return with a goal in a World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica. Hopefully, next year, Samuel will be signing his return to the SPL.

Jason “Rocket” Scotland

2008-2009 FE2Swansea47/4834714024492018112351610

Coming off stomach surgery during the summer, Scotland’s lack of pre season training showed and he hardly seemed the same player in the first few months of the season. After only netting once in 10 matches and 8 starts, he was rested by Roberto Martinez for one match. If this move was intended to hurt Jason’s pride, it had the desired effect as he scored a brace against Wolverhampton the very next game. In the first half of November, Scotty scored two in three starts.
From December however, the real Scotty emerged, scoring 15 goals in 20 league games, setting up four others, and generally creating havoc in opposing defences. In three FA Cup matches against Premiership opposition Fulham and Portsmouth, he scored three times and set up a fourth goal.
Although his performances were not enough to grab a play off spot for his team – reputed for playing the most attractive football in the league but a bit naive defensively – it did grab him a Championship Team of the Year place, as well as heavy interest from Fulham, and Wigan, now coached by Roberto Martinez.
Soca Warriors fans are anxiously awaiting a replication of his club form at national team level.

The big Dog made a surprising return to competitive football, joining Raith Rovers for their last nine games of the season. He was slotted immediately back into the Raith’s defence and kept 7 clean sheets in 9 matches, while providing some unexpected offence with 3 assists.and giving them the lift needed to grab promotion to the second tier of the Scottish leagues.
In June he was finally recalled to the Trinidad and Tobago national team where he joined FIFA’s century club of players with a 100 or more caps.
Over the summer he has been linked to a shock move to Hamilton that would see him return to the Scottish Premier League, three years after leaving Glasgow.

In the summer, Dennis Lawrence returned from international retirement to play against England with the Trinidad and Tobago national team and reclaimed his place as a starting central defender. However, With Roberto Martinez strengthening the Swans with a promotion push for the Premier League in mind, Dennis became somewhat surplus to requirements for Swansea and only played one game for them before being loaned out to League one Crewe Alexander, former club of Clayton Ince.
Tallest would become a fixture in the central defence of Crewe, particularly from the month of December: he would go on to play the full 90 minutes of almost every match: he was forced out of one match in mid-January and had to sit out the following one, and then a similar situation occurred at the end of February. The latter incident resulted in a cheekbone fracture that required him wearing a facial mask to see out the rest of the season.
In addition he also chipped in 4 goals, but it was not enough to avoid Crewe's relegation.

Kevin Austin was a fixture in an ordinary Chesterfield back line in the first half of the season. He however had the distinction of being involved in one of the most curious FA Cup ties of all time – a match between Chesterfield and Droylesden that was once abandoned due to fog, replayed to a tie, replayed and then abandoned a second time, replayed with a Droylesden victory, which was later annulled as Droylesden had used an ineligible player. Chesterfield went on to play (and lose to) Roy Keane’s Ipswich.
In the second half of the season, Austin was used more sparingly, although he still racked up 2000 plus minutes of game time.

2008-2009 ME5Kettering40/45335038244121713051050

After being released by Wycombe during the summer Andre Boucaud found himself back in the Blue Square Premier League with Kettering. He was a regular starter with the non-league side, clocking in excess off 3000 minutes, and was interesting enough to earn himself a trial with league 2 MK Dons in March. At present it is not known if any offer from this or any other Football League club has been offered.

2008-2009MW1Rhyl27/401397157251915521100

After leaving Wrexham, Josh was signed by Welsh Premier League team Rhyl FC. Although an important member of the team in the first half of the season, where he played 1000 plus minutes, scored 5 goals and picked up 4 man of the match titles in the process, he faded badly and was marginalised from the first team for most of the second half, barely playing a 100 minutes total. He was released from the championship winning club in June and will therefore not be taking part in the Champions League qualifiers.

2008-2009 ME5Ebbsfleet44/50232327123914618311120

Like Boucaud, Shakes dropped down to non league football after being released from his Football League 2 club.
At Ebbsfleet he was seemingly randomly assigned roles as a starter, a sub and a reserve teamer but still managed in excess of 2000 minuteson the field thanks to a strong second half of the season.

Silvio Spann

2008-2009ME5Wrexham17/45673821474301430

Why Silvio Spann remained with Wrexham in non league football despite being transfer listed is something of a mystery. He would continue to play no part in the Dragon’s campain to return to the Football league until Brian Carey’s firing in October. His new coach lined him upin six successive games until he dislocated his shoulder twice against Weymouth in mid-November. He would not feature in another league match until the end of February when he was used as a substitute again for several matches. He would return to the starting team in April when Wrexham were firmly implanted in the middle of the table of the fifth division of English football.

Depends on if the rumors were ever true in the first place
Maybe he's seen the light.

Might simply be that Keane has already got what most of us here are unwilling to accept - that Carlos, is a good to very good championship player, but not necessarily more than a borderline Premiership player.

Excellent Job Midknight. Thanks for the research and compilation.

But I am unwilling to accept fully your take on Carlos' level just yet simply because Carlos seemed to be obviously still favoring his leg having returned from a potentially career ending injury. Through the course of the season he was able to sort out his mind and grew more comfortable with the leg. I will look to this season to see if your appraisal of his standard is accurate or if he is indeed a solid Prem player.

Cocorite, don't get me wrong on this. I believe that before the injury Carlos had the potential to be at least a decent Prem player. I just think that he hasn't bounced back form it as much as we would have hoped, and with him pushing 30, and getting limited playing time to boot, I don't think he has the possibility of developping that much more as a player.

It doesn't help that the most glaring deficiencies in his game (faulty long range crossing in particular) don't appear to have improved at all since 2005. That has nothing to do with the injury and seems to be just the result of a technical flaw that he has been unable to work at.

The only possible outlet might be if he begins to be used as an out and out defensive player (right back) and excels at that position. Otherwise I don't see him improving (or his stock rising) anymore as a winger.

I would much like to see him prove me wrong though...

Ah appreciate this explanation, thanks. It makes a lot of sense to me and it shows me your reasoning. My gut feeling about the Rolls Royce is that he is powered by the energizer battery (being 30 is only a number for him) and may have the ambition to prove his class in that league. It may very well be my wishful thinking but confidence appeared to be the greatest culprit for his less than stellar resurgance. But your suggestion about a defensive slot is well taken.

Who's spot he taking?  If Glen show all that form in all dem tours and get drop, who is Daryl Roberts?  Look Scotland have a better record for his club, yet he come home and missing sitters.  JC you know how thing does go with frenism in we football.  Frankly, which striker he better than on the team?  Which one? He better than KJ, STERN, Scotland?  Even Glen deserve he pick.  So who spot he taking?

:timeout:!!Shame on you preacher!! glenn eh do nothing for ppl tuh rate him like if he's the 2nd coming, look how much trials he went on and failed to impress, but roberts playing top flight football form the begining of his professional career.

the only striker on our team who derserve tuh start before roberts is stern IMO !!!! and yet still stern in his golden yrs and he eh playing like before!

KJ is the next one who i will say, yes! he could start over roberts , but glenn , scotty , baptiste, wolf, jorsling, etc etc etc should not touch ah ball over that guy!

lemme ask yuh this , when we needed two goals against bermuda tuh advance to the semi's, who we got it from?

i was there in the marvin lee when them bermudans shut down scotty and stern. scotty look like ah man who lost his shirt in ah gamble, he didn't have ah prayer.

the next game pancho start daryl , and he turtured the bermudan defence until they cracked!! they couldn't contain the yute.

as for scottland showing form for his club, the man eh score for us in ah competative match since 2005, so what forkin good is he to our team ,

remember ronaldinho cyar touch ah ball for brazil in 3 yrs, and that's BC he doh produce for country, and that's when he was lighting up la liga.

if we was depending on scotland and KJ tuh pull we through to the semi's , ah swear bermuda or guatemala would've taken our place in the hex!

for the whole hex which is 5 games , we didn't get ah single forkin goal from the front line, so what the devil yuh talking bout who place roberts could take , them men yuh rating bummin!!!!!!!

if them men was playing for another big name country like germany or france, they would've been riding pine! in any sensible football concious fans opinion, roberts could take all of their places!! after all , they are 0 for 5!! it's not like they're lighting up concacaf.  ssttuueepppssssss

PS: roberts had double figurs this past season, and as a midfielder tuh boot! that's how versitle this kid is.

birchall , carlos, hyland , daniel, yorke, theobald, spann, leon, samuels, didn't produce those figurs, or even came close, but they on the roster big and bold. trust meh horse, if the powers that be was tuh take ah deep hard look into our football, they would ashamed of their lack of awareness.

we could be ah force tuh recon with in the region, but we have tuh stop playing silly games!

but since they want tuh play games with the football , let them suck salt!!!

Scoring on Bermuda ain't enough in Latas eye's dude to warrant a man a play.  Now if you check it good Matu. had Roberts on that squad also Matu had Glen on tour.  Glen rip up and Latas drop him.  I not saying Glen is the 2nd coming but the tour was to prepare for the next game in the hex. If a man perform he should play not get drop.  Forget whether Roberts better than Glen our not.  This thing as you say shows you the kind of thinking on that team.   I do want them suck salt though.  I want to see KJ, Scotty and

Added North American Players Stats (See first post)

Atiba Charles
Atiba Charles spent an uneventful two week long loan in May at the Rochester Rhinos before being recalled to the Proleague

Edson Elcock
Despite starting the first game of the season for the Islanders, Edson Elcock was nevertheless, always a fringe player on the squad – He spent most matches on the bench or off the squad altogether - and the highlight of his season was a brace and Team of the Week selection against Seattle in August. However with four Concacaf Champion’s League matches and the playoffs still remaining for the Puerto Rico team, Elcock quit the team on amicable terms to continue his further education.

Leslie “Tiger” Fitzpatrick
Due to financial difficulties, the Rochester Rhinos started their season in the USL 1 a month laterthan the other teams and played a gruelling 7 games in the first three weeks of May. “Tiger” would be an integral part of this effort, starting all of these and the next 11 game, before obtaining his first rest on the substitute’s bench for two matches. He would then go on to start and play virtually every minute of the Rhino’s remaining 17 games before their elimination from the playoffs at the hands of the Islanders, clocking 3000 odd minutes for the season in the process.

Nigel Henry
Although discarded by the Soca Warriors in the run up to the 2006 World Cup, Nigel Henry continued to make a name for himself as a starting defender for the Puerto Rico Islanders keeping 10 clean sheets and playing 29 full games along the way, allowing them to win the USL regular season and earn a bye for the quarterfinals of the playoffs. His importance to them was underlined in the playoff semifinals after he suffered a serious head injury in the dying minutes of the first leg against the Rhinos. Although Puerto Rico would go on to get past the Rhinos without him, they would concede eight goals in their last four outings – losing the USL playoff finals and barely scraping into the knockout round of the Concacaf Champions League with one point from their last three matches.

Kendall “Jaggy” Jagdeosingh
The former Young Warrior joined the Islanders late in mid May, as a replacement for Kerry Noray after the latter’s club failed to agree terms with the Puerto Rico side. His energetic play framesd him mainly as an impact player, although he would score his first goal in a starting role in his fourth match. He would receive seven straight starts from late August and would reward his coach with two sets of back to back goals, including two vital goals in Concacaf Champions League play. However he would be marginalised in the final stretch for the season, missing the semifinal playoff ties with the Rhinos, and all but three minutes of the final, as well as four of the five reaming Champion’s League group stage games.

Julius James
The young defender started off his first season in the MLS firmly planted on the Toronto FC bench. He spent the first two months but then gained an unexpected opportunity, replacing the starting Toronto central defender 15 minutes into the last match of May against the high profile LA Galaxy of David Beckham. Not only did James succeed in shutting out the Galaxy strike force, but he scored one of Toronto’s two goals. From this moment, he was to play a much more pivotal role – starting 10 of the next 16 games. His new found international experience earned him his first call up with the Soca Wariors in September. Nevertheless Toronto struggled all season to win games (and keep goals out), and failed to make the play offs.

Avery “Blade” John
Despite three straight MLS Cup finals with the New England Revolution, Avery John had difficulty finding a club in that division, and joined up with Miami FC a month into the USL 1 season. The veteran quickly claimed his place as a starter and led the team to 14 clean sheets in 22 games played. Incidentally, they would concede 18 goals in the seven games in which Blade did not particiapte, compared to the 16 in which he did! Ultimately though, the former club of Romario would fail to make the playoffs for a lack of offensive punch (28 goals scored in 24 matches)

Randi Patterson
After his surprise debut with the National Team in March, Randi Patterson started off incredibly well with the USL 1’s Charleston Battery scoring six in five straight victories in May and being named to three USL ‘Teams of the Week’ during that period. He would go on to score four more goals intermittently over the summer, including US Open Cup quarterfinal and semifinal strikes to take the Battery into the final of the knockout tournament against DC United. Unfortunately, they would lose this final, as well as their USL playoff against the Rochester Rhinos, against whom he had already scored in their three previous match ups.

Brent Sancho
After his month long stint in Scotland with Ross County in April, Sancho inexplicably turned up in the USL 1 in August, just when the European leagues were starting their new season. One of the worst teams in the USL 1 before his arrival, Atlanta did not win any of the nine games they played after Brent’s arrival and predictably missed the playoffs.

Scott Sealy
After an injury plagued previous season, Sealy began this one on the bench, but opened his account in the second game of the seasonn and promptly reclaimed his starting spot. However Kansas City’s strike force, including Sealy, would draw blanks for most of the season from then on (13 goals in 15 games). The former CIC striker would score a solitary independence day goal before ending four seasons at Kansas City in a player swap that saw him move to the expansion San Jose Earthquakes.
He was slotted into the San Jose starting lineup, but never really found his rhythm, scoring only once in his first ten games for the Earthquakes. However Sealy’s arrival to San Jose did spark an eight game unbeaten streak. However they would not win any of their next 5 games nor the final race for the playoffs despite back to back goals from Sealy, the second of which was against his old club.

Osei Telesford
After being released by the Chicago Fire following his injury ridden season there, Osei found himself down one level in the USL 1. With the large number of matches played by the Islanders, as well as his new role on the national team; Telesford was called upon to play a number of roles – sub, starter, defensive midfielder, defender – for his club. He became quite lethal in the Concacaf Champions League, scoring in three of six group stage games played, and helping the Islanders to the knockout stage. However he would miss the ultimately unsuccessful USL playoff final with the Vancouver Whitecaps while on national duty.

yeah well onto my next observation...one at a time... ;D you know how it is
dang! I did not realise that Daryl Roberts was doing so well! his stats look good ...so the question now is - how come he isn't on our starting 11?? ???
did you think i was rating up ah bum?

This has been my question for 10 months now, but it seems like no one is listening. :'(

I want to see KJ, Scotty and
Eh preacher! if yuh want tuh discredit ah man , @ least yuh should have yuh facts straight. FYI pancho give darryl roberts 4 call ups since qualifying start, the first bermuda game where he rode pine, the 2nd leg of the bermuda game where he played for 70 mins, he got called for the cuba game and he got a 15 mins sub, he was also called for the guatemala first game where he rode pine again, the man never get called back since last august.

pancho never gave roberts ah fair shake IMO, he only played twice under pancho, like i said the 2nd leg against bermuda and a cobo aganst cuba, after that he never got another look. you said one goal against cuba , but that was an all important goal, the goals that kept us in contention.

scotty had 9 starts KJ had 6, how much goals did they score again?
