Burnley celebrated a night they will never forget as veteran duo Robbie Blake and Brian Jensen emerged the heroes in a sensational 1-0 victory over Manchester United.
Blake's name will go down as the matchwinner, and rightly so for a fine 18th-minute near post volley which flashed past Ben Foster after a sustained period of Clarets pressure.

But Jensen deserved equal billing for a superb penalty save to deny Michael Carrick an equaliser just before half-time.

Jensen then kept his cool during a tense second-half that United dominated, without ever looking likely to deny a team desperately trying to record their first top flight win since 1976.

Thirty-three years is a long time to wait. Yet the explosion of noise that greeted the final whistle at Turf Moor suggested it was all worthwhile as Owen Coyle carved another famous day in Burnley's history, and his own managerial career, coming out on top against fellow countryman Sir Alex Ferguson in such unexpected fashion.

As expected, Ferguson had rung the changes, recalling Carrick, Park Ji-sung and Anderson, as well as handing Michael Owen his first start.

The United boss was buoyed no doubt by Jonny Evans declaring himself fit to partner Wes Brown in central defence, which at least gave the Red Devils back line a more durable look.

Not that it seemed as though they would need it as Burnley rocked badly in the opening stages, struggling to get their bearings on a Turf Moor pitch which has waited so long to host top flight action.

Owen harshly had a goal ruled out for offside when he appeared to have timed his run onto Patrice Evra's through-ball to perfection before beating Jensen at the second attempt.

The former Liverpool star should have done better when Evra's left-wing cross flashed past him at the near-post and with Park, Carrick and Wayne Rooney all finding space, it seemed only a matter of time before United cruised to the front.

Yet the opening goal did not come. And as time ticked by, Burnley visibly gained in confidence.

Martin Paterson and record signing Steven Fletcher were both starting to cause problems when the Clarets launched a concerted raid on the visitors goal.

Paterson thought he was going to score when he sprang the United offside trap, only to find Ben Foster bearing down on him from the opposite direction.

The England goalkeeper made a brave block, then Carrick followed suit as Blake tried to turn home the rebound.

United could not relieve the pressure though and when former Manchester City full-back Stephen Jordan drifted a cross to the far-post, Blake was on hand to let fly with a superbly-struck volley which was past Foster before the United keeper had a chance to react.

A noisy crowd, raised the decibel level to ear-splitting proportions - but Coyle knew the job was not get done.

He knew exactly what to expect from the visitors, who recovered their poise and went after his team.

Yet, in front of Fabio Capello, Owen completely missed his intended header when Brown curled over a near-post cross which found England's fourth-highest goalscorer completely unmarked.

The odds must have been on Owen taking the penalty when Evra was upended by Blake as he nicked the ball towards Burnley's goal.

Instead, Carrick took responsibility - and Jensen emerged the hero, just as he did last season when his spot-kick saves turfed Chelsea out of the Carling Cup.

Jensen must have expected to be kept busy after the interval. But although United dominated possession, they had few clear-cut chances.

A long-range effort from Rooney that sailed harmlessly over was the best they could manage until Park created a bit of space for himself and forced Jensen into a fine full-length save, with Jordan hammering away the rebound.

By that time, Antonio Valencia and Dimitar Berbatov had been introduced; Owen making way after another disappointing contribution.

The pair made a difference. But Burnley were not to be denied, throwing themselves in the way of any United threat.

Jensen was a rock behind a sturdy defence and the final whistle ended a run of 17 straight wins for United against newly-promoted sides. More importantly, it marked Burnley's return to the elite.

Burnley's bolt from the blue floors United as Carrick fluffs spot kick

The season is not even a week old and already it is doubtful whether there will be a more astonishing result over the next nine months. Burnley, out of the top flight since 1976, can reflect on a famous evening whereas this acute embarrassment for Manchester United offers irrefutable evidence that the grieving process for Cristiano Ronaldo has hit them hard.

Sir Alex Ferguson's team were shockingly bad, with Michael Owen's body language saying everything as he was substituted after 63 minutes of personal misery, though it would be unfair to dwell too much on United's shortcomings if it deflects any of the praise away from Burnley. They needed their goalkeeper, Brian Jensen, to make some brilliant saves but this result was no fluke, Robbie Blake's goal bringing Owen Coyle's side a victory that generations of their supporters could once only dream of.

United will look back with anguish about the moment when Jensen saved Michael Carrick's penalty shortly before half-time but Burnley showed everything that will be needed if they are to survive this season: guts, passion and, yes, no shortage of skill.

Ferguson was missing three-quarters of his usual defence and Burnley, not just tipped for relegation but widely backed to collect the wooden spoon as the Premier League's bottom club come next May, must have been pleasantly surprised about the alacrity with which they took advantage of the absence of key players such as Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. United's was a raw and improvisational back four and by the time Blake's unstoppable volley left Turf Moor reverberating with joy Steven Fletcher, the £3m recruit from Hibernian, had squandered a presentable chance to score on his home debut.

Martin Paterson was then denied by Ben Foster after getting behind an increasingly hesitant and uncertain defence but United, playing with an unusual lack of fluency, never cleared their lines and their dithering was punished. Patrice Evra's unconvincing attempt to head away Stephen Jordan's cross dropped invitingly for Blake and if there was one player in claret and blue who the crowd would have wanted to see pulling back his right foot, it was this man. The finish was about as good as it gets, combining equal measures of power and precision, and the ball was still rising as it hit the roof of Foster's net.

The opening 45 minutes made depressing viewing for United's supporters, and those who long for Ferguson to be vindicated in his signing of Owen, not least the watching England manager, Fabio Capello. The striker had two chances in this period but barely got a touch of the ball on either occasion. These might be the embryonic stages of his United career but his confidence is already looking brittle and it was strange that when United were awarded their 43rd-minute penalty he was not assigned the role previously filled by the previous wearer of the No 7 shirt, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Carrick, it could be argued, is a magnificent striker of the ball but not on this occasion. His shot was aimed too close to Jensen, who dived to his right to get the stadium shaking with euphoria once again. Tyrone Mears was first to the rebound to clear any lingering danger.

The penalty had been given for Blake's late, sliding challenge on Evra and, even if Owen did not fancy it, it was peculiar, too, that Wayne Rooney should not have taken the chance to score his 100th United goal. Rooney was too often on the periphery of the game as United found it difficult to spark without Ronaldo. It was startling to see the champions look so laboured, so rudderless. At one point early in the second half Owen could not even make a simple pass to Evra without leaving it short enough for a Burnley player to intercept. Yet again, we saw this once-lethal footballer waving an apologetic hand. For all United's deficiencies, however, it still needed Jensen to be in inspirational form, the Dane keeping out Park Ji-Sung and Ryan Giggs as United realised they were supposed to be the better side.

amazing Fergie eh blame the ref for allowing play to go on when Burnley scored that rocket. 15 minutes before, play should have been held up by the ref because Foster needed to change his tampon.

An upset? Wasn't that the exact same scoreline that they played to last year in London?

True but at times it seems that some fans of the top 4 think that they have some kind of manifest destiny when it comes to winning games.
