Late penalty propels Comunicaciones
concacafchampions.com

Rolando Fonseca scored on an 80th minute penalty kick, lifting Comunicaciones to a 2-1 win over host W Connection in a CONCACAF Champions League Group D game Thursday evening at Manny Ramjohn Stadium.

The win gave the Cremas its first points of the competition, while W Connection suffered its second loss in two games.

Repeating scenes from its 1-0 loss at Real Espana last week, the Caribbean champion created chances, but could not find the back of the net often enough.

Andre Toussaint saw a long-range effort sail over the Comunicaciones crossbar in the 8th minute. Six minutes later, Dominican Republic international Jonathan Frias thought he gave the home side the lead, but his shot was parried out for a corner by goalkeeper David Guerra.

Then, in the 31st minute, the visitors struck against the run of play. Confusion between W Connection defenders Elijah Joseph and Gerard Williams saw a ball break for Transito Montepeque. The 28-year-old forward beat his defender and rounded goalkeeper Marvin Phillip to give his team a shock lead.

The Comunicaciones defense eventually tightened, preventing W Connection from penetrating into the area.

The Savonetta Boys suffered a blow in the 64th minute, when Colombian defender Cristian Viveros was ejected for pulling Manuel Soto to the ground.

Despite being down a man, W Connection equalized 11 minutes later. Clyde Leon executed a give-and-go to perfection with Hughton Hector. Leon took the return pass and did not hesitate as he rocketed a shot past Guerra from 25-yards out.

The 1978 CONCACAF club champion would not settle for a sole away point and was rewarded for its enterprising play with a goal 10 minutes from time. US referee Ricardo Salazar whistled W Connection for a handball infraction inside its own penalty box, giving Fonseca the opportunity to score the game winner.

The victory was only the third for an away team in the tournament after 15 games.

Comunicaciones returns to CONCACAF Champions League action on September 17, when it hosts Real Espana. W Connection welcomes Pumas to Trinidad a day earlier.

That was the worst Refereeing I have seen in a long time, hard to believe he is from USA. Had he referee that game the same way in favour of W Connection in Central or South America they would have surely stoned him...

Can't blame the referee. W-Connection are the ones to blame.

Was it the referee fault that allowed such an easy first goal? That was absolutely poor defending. Primary school mistakes. BTW, almost ALL american referees would have called that penalty. Trust me when I tell you that.

If W-Connection had played well, and created/capitalize on all their opportunities they would have won the game.

It is very good that two PFL teams made it to the group stage. But when W Connection looses to a team like Comunicaciones (with all due respect, but their better days are behind them) then it leaves me thinking a lot of things?

Well I hope both PFL teams don't finish bottom of the table. That will be an embarrassment.

Dias the hurtful thing both Jab and W-Con getting licks from side who not better than them.

Its just they doing shit and not capitalizing on opportunities.

When our teams settle and knock the ball they dangerous...but then like a dotish breeze does pass tru and they hoofing ball looking ameture, sliding in wild etc.

Sometimes it does look like they want to other side to score the way they playing.

Like many have said above, you can't blame the referee.  W.C. made two mistakes and paid for it.  They had many chances to put the game to bed but.... Goals win matches.  And I concur all those teams both PFL teams played are not better than them.  However, W.C. & Jaboleth have been disappointing.
If your heart is not in the game then your not a true footballer!!!

I never blame the Ref for W Connection lost, I was just making an observation about the ref....

What was startling about both WC and SJC, is that they do all that work to get in the box and then there's usually one up there all alone outnumbered three to one.

The final touch is really letting them down. On the upside, Hector looked good. And Toussaint draws fouls well.

It shows that at this level, our club football still has a way to go.

Touches, unfortunately dat doltish breeze that you elude to seems to pass when we national teams play as well...I wonder if dat is a cultural phenomenon dat local coaches need to put more focus on and address more?

We seem to lack concentration, endurance, and focus to play with consistency.....hhmmmmm does not bode well for T&T football.

dais ah real shit penalty

Many of you may remember (years ago) when the T&T senior team narrowly missed out on qualifying for the world cup due to a referee who made a series of bad calls in favor of Haiti. Was there anything the senior team could have done to avoid this outcome? May be not, since I'm guessing that this was our first encounter with that particular referee.

In this case, you can blame this referee (Ricardo Salazar) or blame W-Connection, but football in many ways can be just like boxing. When a boxer is fighting an opponent in his hometown he has to soundly defeat his opponent in order to win. However, in this case we weren't playing Guatemala on their home ground. So, it wasn't a case of a home team or home-referee advantage (although cultural bias could have been involved).

Having said that, this referee (Ricardo Salazar) may have a tendency to quickly hand out cards. Take for example David Beckham recently getting his first red card while playing in the MLS. Guess who issued that red card? None other than Ricardo Salazar himself. In fact he issued two yellow cards and three red cards in this game (two straight red cards to be exact).

I am an assistant coach in Inter-County Soccer (in central New Jersey). My team often has to face a couple of referees who are notorious for handing out cards and issuing frivolous penalties. Whenever we visit those towns, we make a resolution to soundly beat those teams while being careful to avoid making risky tackles or "dangerous plays".

I think the Pro-League teams as well as the national teams should factor certain types of referees into their game strategy. Our coaches shouldn't plan this strategy with the intention of taming our game, but to fine tune our game plan so that the referee's calls do not factor against us.

Never-the-less, Pro-League teams need to tighten up on defense and stop giving up early goals.
