Kenwyne Jones set to miss Liverpool match
By Stuart Rayner (The Journal)

KENWYNE Jones may have underlined his credentials in the battle for places in Sunderland’s forward line, but his international commitments may hinder the 24-year-old’s chances of facing Liverpool when the Black Cats return to the Stadium of Light.

Jones has been named in Trinidad and Tobago’s squad for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against Costa Rica and Mexico.

As a talismanic figure in the T&T squad, Jones’ call-up is no surprise, but it will cause Steve Bruce problems with an important test of his team’s home form coming so quickly afterwards.

The Soca Warriors take on Mexico in Port of Spain on Wednesday, October 14 local time, or the early hours of Thursday British Summer Time – 62 hours before the Black Cats entertain Liverpool. With Jones unlikely to return before Friday afternoon, it is a match the striker will probably have to watch from the sidelines.

Bottom of their qualifying group after eight games, the Soca Warriors look extremely unlikely to qualify for the next World Cup but still have a mathematical chance, and are anyway entitled to call on their star striker in a scheduled international week.

The fixture clash, though, is bad news for Jones who has been made to sweat on his previously-guaranteed first- team place this season.

Jones was left on the bench when Sunderland played Hull last month, the day after Jones returned from his country’s 1-0 World Cup qualifying defeat to the USA in Port of Spain.

Bruce has made great play recently of his desire to promote competition for places within his squad. At times during his Sunderland career Jones’ work-rate has been called into question and the new manager appears to see the presence of England Under-21 international Fraizer Campbell as a good way of motivating the former Southampton player.

Until last week, Jones had scored in only one game this season – a brace against Blackburn Rovers in August – while Campbell has made the most of his limited opportunities to catch the eye.

But two goals and some good combination play with Darren Bent against Wolves strengthened his case.

Jones will have one more opportunity to leave his mark before heading off on international duty this week. The Black Cats travel to Manchester United, where he went on trial as a boy, in Saturday’s televised 5.30pm kick-off.

Some leading managers have called for all Premier League matches immediately after international breaks to be played on a Sunday to avoid the kind of logistical problems Bruce will encounter, but tradition and television demands are against them.

Liverpool will, of course, have problems of their own in that respect – but Sunderland’s smaller squad and Bruce’s fondness for non-European players will exacerbate the Wearsiders’. Paulo Da Silva is due to captain Paraguay against Colombia in Asuncion on October 14. The South Americans have already qualified for the competition.

The good news for Bruce is that John Mensah’s Ghana play their only match of the international week against Benin on the Sunday, giving him plenty of time to return to Wearside.

Da Silva’s call-up is good news for Anton Ferdinand, who has been reassured of his Sunderland future by Bruce.

The club’s most expensive defender was left on the bench against Wolverhampton Wanderers, as Bruce opted to play three of his summer singings – Mensah, Da Silva and Michael Turner – plus Kieran Richardson, a player more used to featuring in midfield, as his back four.

That revived talk of a swap deal with Tottenham Hotspur for right-back Alan Hutton, but Bruce was keen to stress yesterday that Ferdinand remains an important part of his plans.

"I left Anton out on Sunday, but he will be back at some point, don’t worry about that," the manager said.

"It’s a really good thing to have competition for places and players looking over their shoulders."

Ferdinand’s fellow substitutes on Sunday, left-back George McCartney and striker David Healy, meanwhile, were yesterday named in the Northern Ireland squad for the October 14 World Cup qualifier against the Czech Republic.
The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.

Hmmn so Latas already start call-ups for CR and Mexico...for these games, I'd like to see him ONLY call back the overseas-based from the 2006 squad likely to STILL be in contention for the 2014 qualifiers three years away - Kenwyn Jones, Carlos, and Birchall... and give some playing time to the US-based players like Patterson, Julius,Telesford,Jagdeosingh, Yohance Marshall, Ancil Farrier, along with Gay, Hyland, Thompson, Daryl Roberts and goal-keeper Andre Charles...let the bulk of the team come from the best YOUNG local-based, and get them exposed to the harsh realities of World Cup qualifiers NOW! I'll be VERY disappointed to see him call back Ince, Andrews, Spann etc unless he is using the final two games as Farewell Testimonials for them.

I agree with you completely.

In fact, I ready to retire the whole defence. Leave Bakr and J'lloyd and supplement them with the U-20's. Thompson at RB and Primus in the centre, but Julius and Yohance Marshall deserve the opportunity as well.

Birchie in the middle with Hyland, I guess although I feel Spann still have a part to play (once he leave Wrexham!). Roberts, just behind the one striker - Jones, with Gay as his understudy from now til 2014.

Waste of call.
If we're going to focus now on building for 2014, Kenwyne is still a big part of that.

AGREE

The waste of ah good opportunity to be calling back fellas like Dennis L who done 35 yrs old. If Latas lose the game 3-0 with ah bunch ah first timers he go be excused but to be calling back men like Dennis, Andrews, Spann, and still lose is ah waste ah time and foolish. If he plan on being around as coach for a while he has to think about the future now.

Call Kenwyne let Bruce hull he arse. In the last interview he talking about Bent should be playing for England but when it come to T&T he couldn't care less.

Besides Kenwyne has to now see himself as a leader on the team.

I think Spann still has a part to play for us. In midfield. We were good with him there against CR.

So if we don't call Jones back for FIFA mandated times and T&T ent having any more for a while when exactly we suppose to call him back.  For Friendlies against St Kitts ???

Its hard enough to get foreign players released when they supposed to be ah doh see how this could be called anything but a good move.

Waste of a callup. We have so many strikers, lets give others a chance now. KJ doesnt need to play in these games (Not to mention he cant score for we anyway).

There is no point in calling KJ back now! Call him back for WHAT?!

Let the fella stay in Sunderland and earn his stripes as a sure starter with his boss!

He could not score for T&T earlier in the Hex when it mattered so why would he need to score for us now when it doesn't and its too late for us to qualify?

Time to give some of our other young and upcoming strikers their chance to prove themselves and to get some Hex experience!

Leave both KJ and JS in England to establish themselves as firm starters with their respective EPL clubs.

We need not call them again until 2014 qualifiers start back round and only then depending on how they are looking!

Doesn't have to be until quite then... but calling him back does what exactly?  Other than serving to upset his already tenuous spot in Steve Bruce's starting lineup.  Be mindful that in the whole club vs. country thing there has to be some give and take, Sunderland needs him a whole lot more than TnT does right now so let's save whatever goodwill the TTFF might have left with the club for when we really need it in the future... for a 'meaningful' game.

Ey that sound like a good plan.
Bring him back to warm bench to remind him about his sub-par performances in the hex,
and since he didn't run he will still be able to play vs Liverpool.

Andre Charles is an english-born goal-keeper who last represented T&T in our ill-fated Olympic (Under-23) Team 2 years ago...from what I saw, I rate him well

And as for Marshall...breds we SEEM to have a problem at right-back... to the point where we have our most OFFENSIVE weapon (Carlos) playing that position... so I suggest the man get CALLED up...thais all...see what he's got and let him compete for a spot like ALL the others I named..
