By: Gregory Trujillo (T&T Guardian).

St Anthony’s, St Benedict’s and San Juan finished second in respective zones when league competition in the BG T&T Secondary Schools Football League concluded yesterday.

St Benedict’s, needing to win against dethroned champion of the South Zone Naparima to finish behind winner Presentation, was victorious as a result of a lone goal in the third minute by Sheldon Alexander. Presentation edged Vessigny 1-0 on a Jvan Pontiflet goal to completed its schedule on 29 points.

Two second half goals earned St Anthony’s a 2-0 win over Fatima in Westmoorings and the runner-up spot in the North Zone behind St Mary’s. St Anthony’s, East Mucurapo and Queen’s Royal College all finished with 23 points, but the “Tigers” had a superior goal difference. In the 54th minute, a through ball from Naseef Carimullah fell to Garvin Samaroo, who rounded goalkeeper John Thomas to slot home.

St Anthony’s had to wait 17 minutes later to increase the lead. With his back facing the goal, Dave Long turned and let loose a cracking grounder past a crowd of players. Newcomer Woodbrook will be campaigning back in the senior division next season, after bowing 0-7 to St Mary’s away from home. Akhail Noel netted a hat-trick for the Saints, which finished on 27 points.

Trinity, the other team facing demotion, only lost 0-2 to East Mucurapo on Fatima ground to stay in the top bracket as a result of a better goal difference than Woodbrook. In the East Zone, San Juan was held goalless by champion St Augustine, while El Dorado blew its chances due to a 1-1 draw with cellar placed Sangre Grande on the Ojoe Road Recreation Ground. San Juan and El Do finished with the same points and same goal difference but the Bourg Mulatresse Boys got the nod having scored more goals.
