Bon Accord, Montgomery Tobago Primary champs
Published: 1 Nov 2009

Bon Accord Government Boy’s and the Montgomery Government Girls’ were crowned District Champions of the Milo Tobago Primary School Football League at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet on Friday. Montgomery persevered with a 3-1 extra-time victory over Eastern Conference winners, Roxborough Anglican, while Bon Accord Government defeated its Leeward B Zone arch rivals, Bethesda Government, by a 2-1 margin. In the Girls Final, Montgomery, the Western Conference Champions, took an early lead when Aaliyah Charles netted her twelfth goal of the season. Montgomery took the 1-0 lead into half-time but Tsaianne Leander, netted her 19th goal this season for the equalizer, with two minutes remaining, to send the match into extra-time for the second consecutive year.

Montgomery regained the lead in the second minute of extra-time via a Tamara Roberts found the net off an assist by Charles while Roxborough’s Leander miss two good chances for her team before Roberts killed off the contest with her second goal of the game and seventh of the season with about five minutes remaining to land its first title just three years after their boy’s team won the Tobago League. Roberts was voted Player of the final, while Charles won the Golden Ball, for the League MVP and Best Defensive Player, award. Leander won the Golden Boot with a record 19 goals. In the Boy’s decider, Bon Accord, the Leeward B zonal champions, went ahead in the 19th minute when Shakeem Irvine finished off a good build up by Lincoln Duncan and Andel Francis with his seventh of the campaign.

Bethesda, which finished as runner Up in the Leeward B Zone, tied up the score in the 52nd minute when Kareem Phillips with an audacious free-kick, similar to the one scored in the semifinal win over dethroned champions, Whim Anglican. Bon Accord wasted little time reclaiming the lead when Jabari George finished off a well executed one-two play with Irvine for his third league goal as Dwight Yorke’s alma mata held on for its first title in ten years. It was also Bon Accord’s third win over Bethesda this season after having notched a 2-1 Golden Goal win in the semifinals of last month’s Goderick Alfred Tobago Primary School Football Cup and a 3-2 conquest in Leeward B group play this season.

The victory gave Bon Accord the Tobago Cup/League double. Irvine was voted Player of the final, while Carrington became the first goalkeeper to win the “Golden Ball” for the league’s Most Valuable Player, in 12 years. Carrington also won the award for Best Defensive Player, while LaShawn Roberts of Bethesda won the Golden Boot, award for his league high 20 goals. All four teams which participated in the finals have qualified to represent the Tobago Educational District in the Atlantic LNG National Primary School Football League. That competition is set to kick off with the next ten days. Montgomery and Roxborough will attempt to become the first Tobago school to win the National Primary School Girls Football League will Bon Accord and Bethesda will attempt to emulate the former’s triumph from ten years ago, which was Tobago’ s last success in the National Primary School Boys Football League.

Keeping an eye on that Bon Accord team. They have a good squad this year Irvine is turning out to be a deadly marksman. Its a pity that Carrington is playing mostly as GK this season though, he is a very talented Attacking Mid or Winger. Saw him come out and take a free kick from about 35 yds out in that same final and he hit the top of the bar almost had the GK beat. Great job to the Bon Accord Staff , coaches and players also to coach Terry who coaches these boys in the Phoenix youth teams.

Atlantic LNG gives $350,000 to Primary Football League.
Rachael Thompson-King (T&T Guardian).

The Carenage Boys of Port-of-Spain and Environs District, will begin their defence of Atlantic LNG National Primary School’s Football League title on Monday.

They will be looking to cop their third straight crown and fourth overall in Boys’ Division. The league was launched yesterday at the VIP Room of the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo.

This year, Atlantic LNG has invested $350,000 into the league which will see 32 of the top schools (16 each in the Boys and Girls Divisions) in the eight Education Districts battling for supremacy.

Atlantic LNG representative Moonilal Lakhan shared his company’s excitement in being part of making T&T a better place to live by contributing to the youth.

He said, “To solve the problem of crime and to make our country better we must start with the young ones. We must put their young minds in the right place for a better T&T.”

He went on to advise the young footballers to do their best, and they may in the future represent T&T on the international stage.

“Play to win, play fair and have fun. Play well for your school, communities and parents and maybe one day you will be the next Dwight Yorke or Russell Latapy or even Tasha St Louis,” said Lakhan. Girls’ champion Carapichaima RC (Caroni District) was not present at the function but were praised for their performance in the last edition of the league and like Carenage, will be seeking to defend its title.

T&T Football Federation (TTFF) Director of Women’s Football, Jamal Shabazz, delivered the feature address and in it gave kudos to ALNG for recognising the importance of getting involved at the Primary level. “Atlantic LNG has demonstrated that they understand what we need to move forward,” said Shabazz.

He went on to hail the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs, the Education Ministry and the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) for their contributions.

Anthony Creed of the Physical Education Department of the Ministry of Education and the league’s president, Vincent Graham, encouraged the young footballers to strive to be the best at all times.

Carenage, who have also won the title in 2003, 2005 and 2007, will kick off against the second place team in the Victoria District at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella while reigning Girls champion Carapichaima will be on a bye.

Arima Boys boot out 'Primary' champs Carenage
Thursday, November 26th 2009
Trinidad Express

New champions will be crowned in the Atlantic LNG Sponsored National Primary School Football League after Arima Boys RC put out defending national champions Carenage Boys Government yesterday at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.

Still, it took kicks from the penalty mark to separate the teams, who were deadlocked at 1-1 after 80 minutes of football-including 20 minutes extra time. Ten penalty kicks later, Arima emerged winners 3-1 in the shootout, having fought back for a 1-1 half-time scoreline. Nikeann Aaron, it was, who gave Carenage the equaliser after Afton Molino had opened the scoring for the Easterners.

Arima will face Santa Flora Government in next Wednesday’s final at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Santa Flora coming away from Tobago with a hard-fought 3-2 overtime win against Bon Accord Government at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet.

The Tobago champions went ahead after just seven minutes, Jabari George finding the net, but Judah Garcia put Santa Flora level in the 20th. Five minutes later, George hammered one in, only for Diviyo James to cancel the advantage once more in the 47th. Levi Garcia found the winner in extra time, earning Santa Flora their trip to the final.

The Girls final will feature returning champions Carapichaima Girls RC, and Claxton Bay Government, who won semi-finals yesterday against Montgomery Government at the Bacolet Stadium, and Roxborough Anglican at the Marabella venue respectively.

Carapichaima stopped Montgomery in the 12th minute of extra time via the prolific Zoe Swift, her second goal of the match. The teams were locked at 1-1 when full time ended, Swift opening the scoring in the fifth minute, before Aaliyah Charles restored the balance for Montgomery on the half-hour. The Claxton Bay-Roxborough semi was the only match with a regulation time result, Claxton Bay prevailing 2-0 through a brace from Esther Kirk (24th and 37th minutes).

Carapichaima moves into final…
Champ Carenage loses to Arima
Published: 26 Nov 2009 Trinidad Guardian

It took 80 minutes and ten penalty kicks to separate Arima Boy’s RC and defending champion Carenage Boys in a semifinal thriller of the Atlantic LNG Sponsored National Primary School Football League yesterday. The clash between last season’s boys finalists unfolded at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella and in the end it was Arima getting its revenge, 3-1 on penalties. Carenage which battled tenaciously as it did a year ago in the final, battled back through Nikeann Aaron after the Arima Giants went ahead through Afton Molino.

The extra 20 minutes could not separate the teams and it was penalty kicks which decided the outcome. Arima proved stronger in the kicks and earned a spot in the final. In the first match of the double-header, Claxton Bay Anglican marched into the final when it beat Roxborough Anglican, 2-0 in the semifinals of the girls competition. In a close contest, Claxton Bay went ahead through Esther Kirk in the 24th minute. However, despite being pressed by Roxborough in the second half Claxton Bay extended its lead when Esther Kirk notched her double in the 37th minute. Claxton Bay will now meet national Girls champion Carapichaima in the final.

Carapichaima was made to fight by Tobago champion Montgomery in the other Girls semifinal at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago. Carapichaima won 2-1. The match was decided by Zoe Swift whose strike in the 12th minute of overtime gave the champion a chance to defend its championship title. Swift put her team ahead in fifth minute before Montgomery striker Aaliyah Charles put her team level in the 30th minute. In the second match, Santa Flora edged Bon Accord 3-2 in overtime in another closely contested affair. Santa will now meet Arima in the final on Wednesday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain. Following the final in both divisions, the presentation function will be held at 11.45 am.

Arima, Caps girls win 'Primary' knockout
T&T Express

Arima Boys RC cruised past Santa Flora Government 4-2 to lift their sixth Atlantic LNG National Primary Schools Football League title yesterday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

Carapichaima RC were also in winners row at the same venue yesterday, edging Claxton Bay Anglican 2-1 to retain the Girls’ title in 60 minutes regulation time.

Arima had a double from Jean Paul Rochford, and another brace from Renaldo Francois in another impressive performance, after stopping tournament favourites and defending champions Carenage Boys in the semi-finals, in a penalty shootout.

Rochford opened the scoring with just seven minutes on the clock from distance, scoring over the head of Santa Flora custodian Denzil Smith. Their opponents would hit back 11 minutes later, drawing level through David Jones. But Rochford found the net again in the 26th for a 2-1 half-time lead.

In the 39th, Francois added another goal for Arima, and they finished with a fourth after Levi Garcia (40th) cut the advantage to one goal, a mere consolation item.

Francois and Rochford shared the MVP award for the match, as did Carapichaima’s Zoe Swift in her girls fixture.

Swift and Kherdine Cuffy gave Caps’s junior girls a 2-0 half-time lead over Claxton Bay, although Esther Kirk pulled one back for the South team in the 36th.

Yesterday’s results:

Boys
Arima Boys 4 (John Paul Rochford 7th, 26th, Renaldo Francois 39th, 50th) vs Santa Flora 2 (David Jones 18th, Levi Garcia 40th).

Girls
Carapichaima 2 (Zoe Swift 4th, Kherdine Cuffy 17th) vs Claxton Bay 1 (Esther Kirk 36th).

Arima Boys RC School was crowned the new Boy’s champion and Carapichaima RC retained the Girls’ title in the Atlantic LNG National Primary Schools Football League. The finals of both divisions were played yesterday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo. Arima emerged a 4–2 winner over Santa Flora Government, while Carapichaima stopped Claxton Bay Anglican, 2–1. A double from John Paul Rochford and Renaldo Francois earned Arima its sixth overall title. Rochford opened the scoring for the Arima unit with a long range shot that looped over Santa Flora goalkeeper Denzil Smith in the seventh minute.

Santa Flora was able to equalise 11 minutes later with a goal from David Jones. However, through the creative footwork of Rochford, Arima went up 2–1 at the halfway mark. A Carnival-like atmosphere created by the Arima rhythm section that was well-equipped with horns and drums filled the hot, sunshiny day with energy that flowed onto the field. At the start of the second half, goalkeeper Smith was made to work even harder and he did a splendid job saving but Arima kept coming and in the 39th minute got its third goal through Francois. Santa Flora managed to pull one back a minute later thanks to Levi Garcia. For their outstanding performance, both Rochford and Francois shared the boys’ “Most Valuable Player” award.

Zoe Swift received the award for the girls and it was well deserved as she piloted Carapichaima Girls to its second straight crown. Swift lived up to her name, manoeuvring through the Claxton Bay defence with ease, to give her team a 1–0 in the fourth minute from a low shot that rolled past all defenders and the unsuspecting goalkeeper Epiphany Jack. Some 13 minutes later, Carapichaima got its second item from Kherdine Cuffy to lead 2–0. In the second session, Claxton Bay gave a better effort o n defence and managed to keep Carapichaima from adding to its first half score. Claxton Bay was able to get a consolation goal in the final minute from Esther Kirk.

Champion Carapichaima RC are still celebrating its successful defence of the Atlantic LNG National Primary School Football League Girls title. “We are still in high spirits. The girls did a great job. We felt assured of victory having played undefeated all season.” said coach Jim Baptiste yesterday. Carapichaima defeated Claxton Bay Anglican, 2-1 in the final on Wednesday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo. He went on to praise the contributions of his most senior players — captain Zoe Swift, Aaliyah Chow and Kherdine Cuffy — for their leadership. “Swift, Chow and Cuffy were part of the team last year and they did good in helping the team relax and pull off the victory,” said Baptiste. Both Swift and Cuffy were the goalscorers for Carapichaima, which also topped the Caroni District.

Swift, who is the sister of national player Victoria Swift, was named the “Most Valuable Player” (MVP). She also when the award last year. In the Boys’ Division, Arima Boys RC claimed its sixth overall crown, after beating Santa Flora 4-2 at the same venue. Arima also won the St George’s East District title. John Paul Rochford and his teammate Renaldo Francois shared the MVP award in the Boys category. Special awards were also presented at the closing ceremony following the finals to Oswald James, Victor Hunte, Trevor Armstrong, Inskip Carrington, Stanley Gomez, a parent, for their contribution to the league.
