PNM, UNC Both Corrupt !

Corruption continues to be an issue that generates angst in the bosoms of many Trinidadians who however seem resigned to the fact that both the PNM and the UNC are corrupt outfits, with little separating them, notwithstanding the rhetoric.

It is to be noted that Trinidad has slipped seven places down in the 2009 International Corruption Perception rankings. It is now placed 79th of 180 countries, and is seen as one of the most corrupt states in the Caribbean, exceeded only by Guyana and Jamaica. Read the rest here

i was listening to a radio show the other day when some UNC leader was going on and on about how Mr Panday is destroying the party and what the membership should do about it.

I'm not going to argue the merits or deficiencies of the parties, but the UNC is the house that Panday built. What are these guys fighting over? Is it that they want to make a real change, or is it that they perceive that the UNC is the best place to start on a quest for power?

Dookeran et al tried to make a change in the UNC, decided it wasn't possible to work in that environment and left.

I think that is the more honorable path, perhaps not the best political move, but certainly the infighting over the soul of the UNC can't be good. Panday, if he cared about his legacy should have faded back, allowed the party to decide and collected his kudos, now, instead of Mandela, he's Mugabe.

A viable alternative only requires that enough people relocate their thinking away from the 2 camp mentality. The current arrangement suits both the PNM and the UNC. Us vs Them works best when there is an actual "them" to demonize.
