Torbaygo are tormented by hat-trick hero ElmsTuesday, October 20, 2009, 09:33
DIVISION Two contained the only surprises in the Torbay Sunday League at the weekend, with the top two sides dropping points for the first time this season.
In fact, Trinidad and Torbaygo surrendered all three after a
10-0 hiding away to Kingsteignton Athletic 3rds, while leaders The Dolphin Inn were held to a 2-2 draw by Torbay Wanderers.
Striker Jake Elms was tormentor-in-chief for Kingsteignton, opening the scoring at Broadpark before completing his hat-trick with further strikes in the 30th and 71st minutes.
It was 4-0 at half-time, the other goals coming from Mike Turner (36 and 58 minutes), Justin Lashley (41 and 56), Ollie Booth (78), Aaron Cowell (79) and Lee Pascoe, who marked his debut with Kingsteignton's seventh 18 minutes after the break.
There were no excuses from Trinidad & Torbaygo other than most of their squad were at a wedding in Northampton. "There was still enough left behind to put out a side rather than call off the fixture, but, rest assured, Kingsteignton will find it a lot tougher in the return," promised team spokesman Connor Breen.
The Dolphin Inn were likewise short of regular starters and, indeed, played throughout with left-back Adam Shobbrook in goal.
They were grateful for a point, therefore, with new signing Craig Duff poaching both Dolphin's goals during the first half.
Also in Division Two, striker Gary Aldous scored all four in Nova's 4-1 victory over new club Nelson Birdwatchers at Stoodley Knowle. It would have been more had Mark Butler not struck the woodwork on two occasions in an effective partnership alongside Aldous.
In Division One, defending champions AFC Paignton (formerly Half Moon) returned to form after the previous week's 2-0 defeat against Royal Standard with a 10-2 win over The George Inn.
Ollie Critchlow and Chris Sridinko led the spree with four and three goals respectively, while James Horrocks, Alex Bayliss and manager Steve Breed were the other marksmen.
"It proves how short of players we were that I should have to come off the substitutes' bench and score," said Breed.
Applebys were another side to regain their goal-scoring touch, beating Jackz 7-1 at Windmill Hill after Russ Williams and Dave Chalk both recorded hat-tricks. Karl Dooley notched the seventh, with Richard Frost replying for Jackz during the first half.
Sunday's other Division One game saw Royal Standard finally overcome Newton Orient 3-1 after a goal-less first 45 minutes at Decoy.
Shane Shobbrook broke the deadlock for Royal Standard 10 minutes into the second half, while Paul Harrison's two goals sealed it, both following assists by Dan Broadway. It was the first time Broadway has failed to score for Standard this season, though he could count himself unlucky after four efforts came back of the posts.
Paul Dodson kept a belligerent Orient in the game at 2-1 before Harrison struck with his second of the match.
