Trinidad and Torbay-gone? League calls for answers

THE Torbay Sunday League has slapped a two-week suspension on Division Two club Trinidad & Torbaygo.

It follows concerns last weekend when neither the league or their opponents, Torbay Wanderers, were able to make contact with the club ahead of a tie in the Torbay Supplementary Cup.

The immediate impact is that next Sunday's rearranged game against Torbay Wanderers has been postponed.

And the Trinidad & Torbaygo secretary has been invited to appear in front of the next management committee meeting on December 15 to discuss the future of the club.

"We need to know if there's anything we can do to help, if indeed the club has any problems," said league chairman John Hockin.

"Unfortunately, we don't know for the simple reason no-one's been able to make contact with anyone from the club.

"On Sunday, for instance, they were due to play Torbay Wanderers in the Supplementary Cup.

"It was called off because of the (waterlogged) pitch, but Torbay Wanderers, as the home team, were unable to contact anyone to explain the situation.

"Even before that, Torbay's manager Barry Goldthorpe tried contacting them to confirm the fixture, but was still unable to get through."

Hockin revealed that the league has also been concerned with lack of communication, having not heard from Trinidad & Tarbago since first contacting them on November 22 over certain issues. Thus the decision to suspend them.

"What we need to know is: Are they still in existence? Have they gone under? And do they appreciate the implications both for club and their players if they withdraw?

"The league is especially worried about the club's financial situation, bearing in mind we're led to believe there are some club and individual fines outstanding with Devon County FA.

"Debts are accruing with every week they fail to make contact with the league," added Hockin.

Trinidad & Torbaygo entered the TSL for the first time this season and lie third in the table behind The Dolphin Inn and Kingsteignton Athletic 3rds after five wins in eight starts.

A worst case scenario — the club withdrawing — would leave only nine teams in Division Two.

The Herald Express also tried contacting the club yesterday, without success.

Torbaygo are tormented by hat-trick hero Elms

Tuesday, October 20, 2009, 09:33

DIVISION Two contained the only surprises in the Torbay Sunday League at the weekend, with the top two sides dropping points for the first time this season.

In fact, Trinidad and Torbaygo surrendered all three after a 10-0 hiding away to Kingsteignton Athletic 3rds, while leaders The Dolphin Inn were held to a 2-2 draw by Torbay Wanderers.

Striker Jake Elms was tormentor-in-chief for Kingsteignton, opening the scoring at Broadpark before completing his hat-trick with further strikes in the 30th and 71st minutes.

It was 4-0 at half-time, the other goals coming from Mike Turner (36 and 58 minutes), Justin Lashley (41 and 56), Ollie Booth (78), Aaron Cowell (79) and Lee Pascoe, who marked his debut with Kingsteignton's seventh 18 minutes after the break.

There were no excuses from Trinidad & Torbaygo other than most of their squad were at a wedding in Northampton.

"There was still enough left behind to put out a side rather than call off the fixture, but, rest assured, Kingsteignton will find it a lot tougher in the return," promised team spokesman Connor Breen.

The Dolphin Inn were likewise short of regular starters and, indeed, played throughout with left-back Adam Shobbrook in goal.

They were grateful for a point, therefore, with new signing Craig Duff poaching both Dolphin's goals during the first half.

Also in Division Two, striker Gary Aldous scored all four in Nova's 4-1 victory over new club Nelson Birdwatchers at Stoodley Knowle. It would have been more had Mark Butler not struck the woodwork on two occasions in an effective partnership alongside Aldous.

In Division One, defending champions AFC Paignton (formerly Half Moon) returned to form after the previous week's 2-0 defeat against Royal Standard with a 10-2 win over The George Inn.

Ollie Critchlow and Chris Sridinko led the spree with four and three goals respectively, while James Horrocks, Alex Bayliss and manager Steve Breed were the other marksmen.

"It proves how short of players we were that I should have to come off the substitutes' bench and score," said Breed.

Applebys were another side to regain their goal-scoring touch, beating Jackz 7-1 at Windmill Hill after Russ Williams and Dave Chalk both recorded hat-tricks. Karl Dooley notched the seventh, with Richard Frost replying for Jackz during the first half.

Sunday's other Division One game saw Royal Standard finally overcome Newton Orient 3-1 after a goal-less first 45 minutes at Decoy.

Shane Shobbrook broke the deadlock for Royal Standard 10 minutes into the second half, while Paul Harrison's two goals sealed it, both following assists by Dan Broadway. It was the first time Broadway has failed to score for Standard this season, though he could count himself unlucky after four efforts came back of the posts.

Paul Dodson kept a belligerent Orient in the game at 2-1 before Harrison struck with his second of the match.

RESULTS

Division One: Applebys 7 Jackz 1, The George Inn 1 AFC Paignton 10, Newton Orient 1 Royal Standard 3.

Division Two: Kingsteignton Athletic 3rds 10 Trinidad & Torbaygo 0, Nova 4 Nelson Birdwatchers 1, Torbay Wanderers 1 The Dolphin Inn 2.

Anonymous Torbaygo facing league charge

Tuesday, December 22, 2009, 09:35

THE Torbay Sunday League has charged Torquay-based Division Two club Trinidad & Torbaygo with bringing the league into disrepute.

The competition newcomers were already suspended from playing fixtures by both the TSL and Devon County FA.

And the latest development could lead to expulsion by the league unless someone from Trinidad & Torbaygo FC makes contact to explain the lack of communication, and their reasons for not paying outstanding fines to Devon County FA.

"It's all very sad," said league chairman John Hockin.

"We hadn't realised when we suspended them three weeks ago that the county FA had done likewise for non-payment of fines.

"However, they've now been charged with bringing the league into disrepute, so hopefully this will prompt someone from the club to make contact.

"They've been given 14 days to respond, but I'm afraid there may no alternative other than expel them unless someone turns up at a committee meeting in January 18 to explain their actions."

Trinidad & Torbaygo were one of three new teams to join the Torbay Sunday League this season along with pub sides The Jolly Judge FC and the Totnes-based Lord Nelson Birdwatchers.

Made up mostly of players who had left youth football with Chelston Juniors FC to move into senior football, they opened with four successive wins, only to lose the next four after key players joined other clubs.

They now lie third from bottom of Division Two, propped up only by Birdwatchers and Jolly Judge.

Added Hockin: "The league has written another letter to the club that carries the charge of bringing the league into disrepute, and this time I really do hope there's a reply."

Meanwhile, only one game survived Sunday's pitch inspections following heavy overnight frost.

Brixham's Furzeham Green was the exception, a decision which Jackz took full advantage of by beating fellow Division One strugglers Newton Orient 4-1.

It also proved a highly satisfactory debut for striker Jordan Hopkins, who grabbed a hat-trick, including two to help provide Jackz with a 3-0 interval cushion.

Sam Simcox was the other goal-scorer from a free kick, though Jackz were guilty of missing a penalty after Matt Shepherd had been upended. Shepherd was also responsible for missing the spot kick.

Afterwards, Jackz spokesman Scott Dandy praised Karl Whitefoot for the way he refereed the game.

"The temperature was freezing, but there was no wind and enough moisture in the pitch for sliding tackles.

"As a result, it was an enjoyable game which Mr Whitefoot allowed to flow with the occasional word in the ear of the players. He was superb."

Nine man Newton Orient's goal came from Jason Kinsman.
