Malaysian court rules non-Muslims may call God Allah
Muslims take part in Friday prayer at the National Mosque in Kuala Lumpur
Most of Malaysia's population is Muslim

A court in Malaysia has ruled that Christians have a constitutional right to use the word Allah when referring to God.

The High Court said a government ban on non-Muslims using the word was unconstitutional.

The court was ruling on a lawsuit filed by the Herald, a publication of the Catholic Church in Malaysia, in 2007.

The authorities had insisted that Allah was an Islamic word which could only be used by Muslims.

The BBC's Jennifer Pak in Kuala Lumpur said some Muslim groups suspect the Catholic Church is seeking to encourage Muslims to convert to Christianity - a move which is illegal in Malaysia.

'Glorious new year'

The issue had become a symbol of a growing number of religious grievances among minority groups, in a political environment often divided along racial and religious lines, our correspondent adds.

The Herald filed for a judicial review after it was temporarily ordered to stop publishing in 2007 for referring to "Allah".

The publication said it had been been using the word for decades, and had a constitutional right to do so.

The Herald welcomed Thursday's ruling, saying it would be a "glorious new year for some 850,000 Catholics in Malaysia".

More than half of Malaysia's population is Muslim but the large Chinese and Indian communities are mainly Christian, Buddhist or Hindu.

I was wondering since when Allah is a Islamic word?  Allah was used before Mohammad was even born and was representative of a god...among many by the polytheistic peoples of the area.  Mohammad just came and stated that the head god was Allah and he was the only God.

Interestingly, many Evangelical Christians do NOT think or BELIEVE that Muslims worship the same God.

The Muslims agree it is the same God apart from the Jesus and Holy Ghost part of the God head.

When I was in Bahrain our group visited the Grand Mosque and had an hour long conversation with the Imam there. When the man break it down it really is the same God. I never really made the connection until that meeting. I had to go check my Bible and sure enough it there.

The Evangelicals could deny all they want, it in the same Bible they like to quote. The Jews (including Jesus) followed along the line of Abraham's son Isaac and the Muslims along the line of his son by Hagar, Ishmael (Abraham first born son). Ishmael may have been illegitimate, but that doh make him any less his blood. In Genesis 16, when Hagar run away an angel of God found her and told her that her descendants will be too numerous to count and her son will be against everyone and will live in hostility to all his brothers (Christianity vs Islam?).

Dem men killing each other in the Middle East over rituals and legality aimed at the same God steups...

Christianity (some) argue that Allah is a pre-Islamic name coming from the compound Arabic word Al-ilah which means the God, which is derived from al (the) ilah (deity).   The Arabic name for “God” is the word “Al-ilah.” It is a generic title for whatever god was considered the highest god.

Different Arab tribes used “Allah” to refer to its personal high god. “Allah” was being worshipped at the Kaa’ba in Mecca by Arabs prior to the time of Mohammed.

It was formerly the name of the chief god among the numerous idols (360) in the Kaaba in Mecca before Mohammed made them into monotheists. Historians have shown that the moon god called “Hubal” was the god to whom Arabs prayed at the Kaa’ba and they used the name “Allah” when they prayed.

What does this mean to Islam?  It is anyone's guess, but According to the Encyclopedia of Religion, Allah corresponded to the Babylonian god Baal, and Arabs knew of him long before Mohammed worshipped him as the supreme God.

Before Islam the Arabs recognized many gods and goddesses, each tribe had their own deity. There were also nature deities. Allah was the god of the local Quarish tribe, which was Mohammed's tribe before he said he received his revelation Islam to lead his people out of their polytheism.

Allah was then known as the Moon God, who had 3 daughters who were viewed as intercessors for the people into Allah. Their names were Al-at, Al-uzza, and Al-Manat, which were three goddesses; the first two daughters of Allah had names which were feminine forms of Allah.

Hubal was the chief God of the Kaaba among the other 360 deities. Hubal was the chief God of the Kaaba among the other 360 deities. Hubal was a statue likeness of a man whose body was made of red precious stones whose arms were made of gold. (Reference Islam George Braswell Jr.)

So the above is the argument of some Christians and they say that is proof that Muslims worship a different God to theirs...I don't see the exact correlation.  Because Mohammad destroyed all the idols himself and stated that  Allah was the God of Abraham!

Some Christian scholars have suggested that Muhammad used the term Allah in addressing both pagan Arabs and Jews or Christians in order to establish a common ground for the understanding of the name for God, a claim Gerhard Böwering says is doubtful.[11] According to Böwering, in contrast with Pre-Islamic Arabian polytheism, God in Islam does not have associates and companions nor is there any kinship between God and jinn.[11] Pre-Islamic pagan Arabs believed in a blind, powerful, inexorable and insensible fate over which man had no control. This was replaced with the Islamic notion of a powerful but provident and merciful God.[30]

According to Francis Edwards Peters, "The Qur'an insists, Muslims believe, and historians affirm that Muhammad and his followers worship the same God as the Jews (29:46). The Quran's Allah is the same Creator God who covenanted with Abraham". Peters states that the Qur'an portrays Allah as both more powerful and more remote than Yahweh, and as a universal deity, unlike Yahweh who closely follows Israelites.

Same here; I thought Allah was more an Arabic than Islamic word. Christians in Egypt does call their God "Allah".

PESHAWAR, Pakistan - A suicide bomber blew himself up in an SUV at an outdoor volleyball tournament in northwest Pakistan on Friday, killing 88 people in a village that opposes Taliban insurgents, police said.

The bomber struck as young men played volleyball in front of a crowd of spectators, including elderly residents and children, near the town of Lakki Marwat, officials said.

The bloodshed will put President Asif Ali Zardari's efforts to fight the Taliban under greater scrutiny, pressure he does not need at a time when corruption cases against his allies could be revived.

"It's just a disaster. I can see flesh, bodies and wounded all around," Fazl-e-Akbar, a witness, told Reuters by telephone. "It's dark. Vehicles' headlights are being used to search for victims."

Local police chief Ayub Khan said the bomber blew himself up in his sport utility vehicle in the middle of the field. A second vehicle was believed to have fled the scene.

"We have removed all bodies and wounded from the rubble," Khan said, adding that 88 people were killed.

Express 24/7, a Pakistani TV channel, said 65 people were wounded and more than 20 homes destroyed in the surrounding neighborhood.

The blast occurred near Pakistan's tribal belt, and was the latest bloodshed to rattle the country since the army launched a military offensive against Taliban fighters in the South Waziristan tribal region. The operation has scattered insurgents but provoked apparent reprisal attacks that have killed more than 500 people since October.

Khan said the town had earlier "set up a militia and expelled the militants from this area. This attack seems to be reaction to their expulsion."

Police: Elders' meeting was target
Khan said an anti-Taliban meeting of local tribal elders in a mosque close to where the tournament was being held was the real target of the attack, but the driver failed to reach it.

Nightly News
The bomber set off some 550 pounds of explosives loaded in the car at the field, which lies in a congested neighborhood, Khan said.

Police official Tajammal Shah said eight children, six paramilitary troops and two police were among the dead.

Omar Gull, 35, a paramilitary soldier who was wounded, said the attacker drove the vehicle recklessly into the crowd. "People were just trying to understand what's happening when the bomb went off," he said. "It was then chaos. It was smoke, dust and cries."

Another police official, Habib Khan, said some 300 people were on the field when the incident took place.

"We had security there. We had it for the meeting, and for the tournament," Ayub Khan told The Associated Press by phone.

Khan said a second vehicle fled the scene. "We believe it may be used to attack some other place," he told Reuters.

Suspected U.S. missile kills 3
Also Friday, a suspected U.S. missile struck a car carrying alleged militants in North Waziristan tribal region, killing three men, two intelligence officials said. It was the second such strike in less than a day.

The strikes are part of the U.S. campaign to eliminate high-value militant targets that use Pakistan as a safe haven to plan attacks in neighboring Afghanistan and on the West.

The one Friday happened near Mir Ali, a major town in the region, two intelligence officials said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record. Shortly afterward, Taliban fighters arrived at the scene of the attack in the village of Ghundi and moved the bodies to an undisclosed location, the officials said.

U.S. officials rarely discuss the strikes, and Pakistan publicly condemns them, though it is widely believed to aid them secretly.

Karachi, the country's largest city, came to a virtual standstill Friday after religious and political leaders called for a general strike to protest a bombing that killed 44 people and subsequent riots.

The city's major markets, stores and business centers were closed, along with financial institutions that had already planned to shut because of New Year's Day. Public transportation was halted and gas stations were shut down.

Religious procession hit
Monday's bombing occurred in the midst of a procession of minority Shiite Muslims during the Islamic holy month of Muharram. Afterward, angry protesters went on a rampage, setting fires to about 2,000 stores that took three days to completely put out.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik, on a visit to Karachi, said investigators were still determining if the attack was a suicide bombing.

He also questioned the claim of a purported Taliban spokesman, Asmatullah Shaheen, that the militant group was behind the attack. Local news reports on Friday quoted a more prominent Taliban spokesman, Azam Tariq, as denying that the Pakistani Taliban's central leadership had approved the attack, though he did not rule out the possibility that Shaheen's group had carried it out without approval.

Elsewhere in the northwest, a roadside bomb exploded near a car in the Bajur tribal region, killing an anti-Taliban tribal elder and five of his family members, said Nasib Shah, a local government official.

Bajur was the focus of a 2008-09 army offensive but still suffers some militant violence. Tribal leaders who support the government against the Taliban are frequent targets of attacks.

why?  Tha was what he was souting as he drove in according to the television news reports.

Besides they always claim that God is great when killing in his name.

If he is so great why do they need to kill for Him,?  Let him kill for himself...not so?
