Salvador Cabanas, a forward for the Mexican team Club America, was in critical condition. He was conscious when he arrived at a hospital where he was being operated on to remove the bullet, team president Michel Bauer told Televisa network.

AP - Jan 25, 10:06 am EST World Soccer Gallery “He was a bit confused and didn’t know what had happened and he was asking where they were taking him and why they were taking him there,” Bauer said.

Two suspects were detained and details surrounding the shooting are unclear, Mexico City Attorney General Miguel Angel Mancera told Televisa. Mancera said Cabanas had gone to the bar with his wife and was shot before dawn.

Juan Angel Napout, president of Paraguay’s soccer federation, said a doctor would travel to Mexico to accompany Cabanas.

“We are praying for him,” Napout said.

The 29-year-old player is a striker for the Paraguayan team that is grouped with defending champion Italy, New Zealand and Slovakia in the first round of the World Cup.

Cabanas has been playing in Mexico since 2003, when he was with the Jaguars. In 2006 he was sold to Club America. He has 125 goals in 218 games in Mexico and is one of the best strikers in the Mexican soccer league.

Steve Bruce, manager of the English club Sunderland, this month expressed interest in signing Cabanas.

Cabanas was honored as South America’s soccer player of the year for 2007 by Uruguay’s El Pais newspaper, the only time a player in Mexico has won the award. He is a former scoring champion in the Mexican and Chilean leagues.

Cabanas out of surgery; bullet lodged in skull

By STEPHEN WADE, AP Sports Writer

MEXICO CITY (AP)—Paraguay’s top footballer Salvador Cabanas was in critical but stable condition on Monday following surgery in which doctors failed to remove a bullet lodged in his skull.

Dr. Ernesto Martinez, who was part of the surgical team, told reporters he could not say that the Paraguay striker was out of life-threatening danger, but he called his condition stable.

Cabanas, expected to lead Paraguay when the World Cup opens in June, was shot in the head in a pre-dawn attack on Monday at “Bar Bar,” a popular nightspot in a well-off Mexico City neighborhood.

“We cannot guarantee that his life is out of danger,” Martinez said.

“Injuries like this are unpredictable,” he added. “We don’t know what kind after effects he might have—perhaps none, or perhaps there will be many. We don’t know right now.”

Mexico City Attorney General Miguel Angel Mancera, after visiting the bar, said that robbery did not appear to be the motive in the attack on the forward who plays for Mexico City club America.

“At this moment we do not think the motive was robbery because nothing was taken,” Mancera told reporters at the crime scene.

America club president Michel Bauer said Cabanas was conscious when he arrived at the Mexico City hospital and was speaking as he prepared for surgery to remove a bullet lodged in the front part of his skull.

“He was a bit confused and didn’t know what had happened and he was asking where they were taking him and why they were taking him there,” Bauer told Mexico television Televisa.

Bauer said Cabanas’ wife told him the two were preparing to leave the bar when the shooting took place in a bathroom. His wife said she found her husband on the bathroom floor.

Mancera told reporters that four people were being questioned, two security guards and the manager of the bar, and a fourth person he identified as Cabanas’ brother-in-law. He said the brother-in-law volunteered to testify.

Authorities in the city’s leafy Alvaro Obregon borough ordered the bar closed Monday, saying it had failed to provide adequate security for its customers based on the Cabanas shooting.

Borough spokeswoman Georgina Pineda said the bar’s late closing hours—the shooting reportedly took place an hour or two before dawn—were not the reason for the closure. Pineda said it had operated with a permit as a “private club” that exempted it from normal closing hours, though alcohol sales were supposed to stop in the early morning hours.

Pineda said authorities had not received any previous complaints about the bar.

However, the city government said in statement that it will demand borough authorities take more steps to ensure such businesses do not violate licensing rules and closing-time regulations.

Cabanas, 29, has played in the Mexico league since 2003 and is the highest profile player on the Paraguay national team, which will face Italy, New Zealand and Slovakia in the group stage of the World Cup in South Africa in June.

Cabanas has scored 125 goals in 218 matches in Mexico. Earlier this month he attracted the attention of Sunderland manager Steve Bruce, who expressed interest in bringing Cabanas to the Premier League club. Reports suggested the deal may have fizzled because America’s asking price was too high.

“Club America is deeply sorry for what happened to our beloved Salvador Cabanas and shows its total support for his family and loved ones,” the Mexican club said in a statement.

Cabanas played over the weekend in America’s 2-0 loss to Morelia.

Paraguayan Football Association president Juan Angel Napout said a doctor would travel to Mexico to aid Cabanas in his recovery.

“We are praying for him,” Napout said.

Cabanas was named the South American football player of the year in 2007 by Uruguay’s El Pais newspaper, the only time a player in Mexico has won the award.

There is a long history of violence involving Latin American football players.

In probably the most notorious case, Colombia defender Andres Escobar was shot and killed in Colombia only days after his own-goal helped the United States defeat the Colombians 2-1 in a major upset at the 1994 World Cup.

Police identify suspect in Cabanas shooting
By STEPHEN WADE, AP Sports Writer

Buzz up! 39 PrintMEXICO CITY (AP)—Police have identified a suspect in the shooting of Paraguay footballer Salvador Cabanas, who was in critical but stable condition Tuesday after being shot in the head in the bathroom of a bar in a fashionable Mexico City neighborhood.

Mexico City Attorney General Miguel Angel Mancera identified the suspect as Jose J. Balderas Garza—known also as “El JJ” or “El Modelo”—from surveillance videos. Mancera said the videos showed the suspect entering the toilet with his bodyguard just moments before the Paraguayan was shot.

Hours after the shooting on Monday, surgeons attempted to remove a bullet lodged in Cabanas’ skull but decided the operation was too risky.

Mancera said the suspect spoke with an accent from the northern state of Sinaloa—a center of Mexico’s drug trade. But he said “there is no indication of organized crime,” suggesting instead an argument involving a Cuban woman might have set off the violence.

“It could have been an argument between the two (Cabanas and Balderas Garza) given their proximity and the fact she (Cuban woman) told us she had been talking with Cabanas’ brother-in-law,” Mancera said.

Officials said Cabanas was in the bar with his wife and brother-in-law.

Mancera said a bar cleaning employee recalled there had been “an argument, a strong exchange of words” between two men in the bathroom before a shot was fired.

Videos showed that club employees did not attempt to stop the suspects as they hurriedly left the bar and got in a car.

“Nobody did anything to stop them,” Mancera said.

Mancera said investigators were questioning 16 people, including bar employees.

Authorities in the Mexico City borough where the shooting took place ordered the bar closed Monday, saying it had failed to provide adequate security for its customers based on the shooting.

Borough spokeswoman Georgina Pineda said the bar’s late closing hours—the shooting reportedly took place just after 5 a.m.—were not the reason for the closure. Pineda said it had operated with a permit as a “private club” that exempted it from normal closing hours, though alcohol sales were supposed to stop in the early morning hours.

On Tuesday, Hospital officials said an MRI scan indicated Cabanas’ condition had not worsened.

“Salvador is showing favorable signs (of recovery), he’s stable and is starting to have brain responses to pain,” Dr. Ernesto Martinez told reporters. “But we still have to wait.”

Cabanas, 29, is the star player in Paraguay’s national team, which will play at the World Cup in South Africa in June. He is also the top scorer for Mexico City Club America.

Club America president Michel Bauer said the team’s league match against the Indios scheduled for Sunday would go on as planned.

The club started a page on its Web site for fans to leave messages for Cabanas. By Tuesday afternoon, supporters had left more than 2,000 messages.

Cabanas has played in the Mexico league since 2003 and has scored 125 goals in 218 matches. He also scored 10 for the national team.

Earlier this month, he attracted the attention of Sunderland manager Steve Bruce, who expressed interest in bringing Cabanas to the English Premier League club. Reports suggested the deal didn’t go through because Club America’s asking price was too high.

Salvador Cabanas returns after being shot in the head
By Mani Djazmi (BBC Sport)

As Fabrice Muamba continues his recovery from the cardiac arrest he suffered so publicly last month, he may take inspiration from another footballer who came very close to death and is about to complete his comeback.

Paraguay international Salvador Cabanas is set to play his first professional match for more than two years on Saturday, after recovering from being shot in the head.

In January 2010, Cabanas was enjoying a day off from training with Club America in Mexico City.
He became involved in an argument with an alleged drugs lord, "JJ" Balderas, who shot him in the toilets of a bar and was later arrested for attempted murder.

Although the bullet did not kill Cabanas, doctors could not safely remove it without further endangering his life, and it remains lodged in his head to this day.

At the time, Cabanas was not only a key player for his club in the top tier of the Mexican League, but one of the first names on the team sheet for Paraguay who, later that year, enjoyed their best ever World Cup, reaching the quarter-finals before being knocked out by Spain.

Despite their run, many Paraguayans believe they would have done even better had the 2007 South American player of the year been available.

Last August, he returned to the iconic Azteca Stadium, where he played for Club America, to appear for a few minutes for both sides in a friendly between his former team and Paraguay.

Three months ago, Cabanas, who in the meantime had returned to Club 12 de Octubre, the side from his home town of Itaugua where he began his career, was given the all clear to return to competitive football.

It completes what the player described as a miraculous recovery.

"Nobody survives what happened to me," the 31-year-old said. "That's why I always appreciate all the people who prayed for me and also the president of Doce [Club 12 de Octubre] who's let me be with them.

"Having faith was fundamental for me. That's why I'm here right now."

Doce, who won the league in 2002 but will begin the new season in the third tier, are coached by Rolando Chilavert, the brother of the colourful, goalscoring Paraguay keeper Jose Luis.

Talking to World Football about Cabanas's recovery, the 50-year-old former midfielder said: "He's improved a lot compared to the early days.

"We know there are things that are irreversible but his insistence and perseverance makes him better every day. I believe he will help us and he will be starting in the opener.

"Physically, he is fit. On his left side that was a problem in the beginning, I can say he is 90% in his movement."

Cabanas was a pacey, deep-lying forward who enjoyed a stunning Copa America in 2007, coming off the bench to score three times as Paraguay reached the last eight.

At 31, it is uncertain whether he will ever be fit enough to be picked for La Albirroja - as the national side are known - who are now coached by his former international team-mate Francisco Arce.

But as he contemplates competitive action again, Cabanas has this message for Fabrice Muamba, most of whose journey to recovery lies ahead.

"Tell him to be strong. He can get out of this. It depends on him. My best wishes for him and his family."
The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.
