Larry Gomes honoured at Vice Chancellor's match

Saturday, February 27th 2010

Former West Indies and Trinidad and Tobago batsman Larry Gomes was honoured by the University of the West Indies (UWI) yesterday at the start of the match between visiting Zimbabwe and a UWI Vice Chancellor?s XI at Sir Frank Worrell Memorial Field at St Augustine.

He follows a long list of former West Indies cricketers who have been honoured by UWI for their contribution to regional cricket.. Among them are Sir Vivian Richards, Gus Logie, Gordon Greenidge, Jeffrey Dujon, Desmond Haynes, Joel Garner, Michael Holding, Malcolm Marshall, Andy Roberts, Richie Richardson, Curtly Ambrose, Courtney Walsh, Jimmy Adams, Ian Bishop, Ridley Jacobs, Roger Harper and Irving Shillingford.

Gomes played 60 Tests for the West Indies, scoring 3,171 runs with nine centuries and a highest score of 143 and received a plaque honouring him for ’his sterling contribution to West Indies Cricket.’

After receiving his commemorative plaque, Gomes said: ’As a past international cricketer, it is always nice to be remembered on occasion and I was very humbled and appreciative, when I was told that I would be recognised this morning.

’I was honoured and privilege to play 60 Tests for West Indies and though my record may not bear statistical comparison with the likes of Brian Lara or Sachin Tendulkar, I hope that I played the role that was required of me with reasonable success,’ Gomes added.

It's good to know that someone in the family has left a mark behind and is being recognized for his contribution.
The difference between the possible and
the impossible lies in a person determination.
