T&T WNT U-17 finishes 3rd after 1-1 draw with Canada.
By: canadasoccer.com.

Canada's women's U-17 team closed out the Women's Under-17 Four Nation Tournament with a 1:1 draw against host Trinidad and Tobago.

The match was played in front of a spirited crowd at Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago. The host scored in the opening half and Canada's Haisha Cantave returned with the equaliser in the second half.

"It was a very well played match by Canada against a hard-working and direct opponent," said Canadian national coach Bryan Rosenfeld. "We created many chances, but not enough to win."

Tonight's match was Canada's third international match in six days. Rosenfeld's starting XI featured Sabrina D'Angelo in goal, Ally Courtnall at right back, Shannen Jainudeen and Nicole Setterlund at centre back, Katherine Caverley at left back, Chantale Campbell, Kylie Davis and Sabrina Hémond from right to left in the midfield, and Haisha Cantave, Nour Ghoneim and Diamond Simpson from right to left up front.

Both teams came out to a flying start. Less than two minutes from the whistle, right back Ally Courtnall was driving into the offensive zone and winning Canada's first corner of the match.

Just three minutes later, Trinidad and Tobago had a wonderful chance after a cross got past Canadian goalkeeper D'Angelo. Fortunately, Setterlund got back just in time and dove to knock the shot wide of the net.

Then in the eighth minute, Campbell stepped up and fired a 30-yard blast that hit the crossbar.

The play continued both ways, but then Canada thought it had a worthy opportunity after Simpson broke in past the defence. Simpson was tackled on the play by goalkeeper Keri Myers, but there was no call on the play.

Four minutes later, Trinidad and Tobago opened the scoring with the first goal of the game in the 19th minute. Canadian goalkeeper D'Angelo was knocked in the air when several players went up to connect with a Trinidad and Tobago free kick. The ball came down and scrambled its way over the line for a 1-0 Trinidad and Tobago lead.

"Trinidad and Tobago's players fought like crazy, but our Canadian players never quit," said Rosenfeld.

Canada quickly returned to action looking for the equaliser. While Canada would have to wait until the second half, it did get close with several more chances before the half-time whistle.

In the 32nd minute, Campbell produced a great shot along the ground that was nearly redirected on target by Cantave. Five minutes later, Cantave had a chance on a breakaway, but her shot was stopped by Myers.

Then in the 40th minute, Courtnall had another one of her great runs, but was pulled down right on the edge of the penalty area. Again, there was no call on the play.

Before the second half, coach Rosenfeld made his first of five changes, replacing Hémond with Abigail Raymer. Within five minutes of her entry, Raymer had a good chance off a Cantave cross, but Raymer was just wide with her shot.

A few minutes later, it was Cantave on the receiving end of a Setterlund pass. Cantave did not miss, firing the equalising goal into the top corner of the net.

From there, Canada maintained most of the possession, but could not score the winning goal. There was a great strike from Cantave in the 63rd minute, a well-taken free kick by Campbell in the 81st minute, and a good run by substitute Zakiya McIntosh in the 85th minute.

During the second half, coach Rosenfeld made four more changes. He replaced Raymer with Caroline Beaulne in the 75th minute, Cantave and Ghoneim for McIntosh and Haillie Price in the 77th minute, and Davis for Kinley McNicoll in the 83rd minute.

The Canada 1:1 draw closed out a week-long camp in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago. Following the match, Canada will have a few more days of training before heading to Costa Rica for the 2010 CONCACAF Women's Under-17 Championship which runs 10-20 March.

South Africa get final women's U-17 W/Cup ticket
T&T Express

World Cup hosts, the ’Bafana Bafana’ of South Africa exited the competition at the Group Stage, but South Africa’s Under-17 women will have a chance to go further than that at Trinidad and Tobago 2010.

South Africa will debut at the T&T Under-17 Women’s World Cup in September after qualifying for the tournament in a play-off against Tunisia. The South Africans bounced back from a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Nigeria in qualifying to stop Tunisia 1-0 and 2-1 in their home and away legs to book their spot.

They will join Ghana in the 16-team tournament, along with the Nigerians, who are pooled with Chile, North Korea and T&T in Group A. South Africa are in Group B with Mexico and South Korea.

’We succeeded because the girls were extremely focused, and they played with passion and pride,’ said South African coach Solly Luvhengo on fifa.com. ’We set the tempo and we didn’t allow Tunisia to dictate the game, especially since we were playing them in their own backyard. Tunisia are hard to beat and I am proud of my players: they fought like real champions.’

Europe’s representatives have also been decided, with European champions Spain finishing atop UEFA, with the Republic of Ireland, who will make their tournament debut, and Germany (second and third respectively) grabbing the other spots.

Chile
Nigeria
Korea DPR

Group B
Germany

Group C

No dengue threat to U-17 Women’s World Cup in TT.

No dengue threat to U-17 Women’s World Cup in TT.
By Clint Chan Tack (T&T Newsday).

One month before the kickoff of the FIFA Under-17 Women’s Cup in Trinidad and Tobago, Health Minister Therese Baptiste-Cornelis has given the assurance that the tournament will not be cancelled because of the dengue outbreak.

Works and Transport Minister Jack Warner is also FIFA vice-president and the driving force behind the staging of two World Cups in Trinidad and Tobago.

The first was the Under-17 Men’s World Cup in 2001 which featured future stars including Fernando Torres, Carlos Tevez, Javier Mascherano, Nico Kranjcar, Deigo and Andres Iniesta.

Speaking at the post-Cabinet news conference yesterday, Baptiste-Cornelis said : “Works have already started in terms of our preparation to deal with them (teams, officials and other persons coming to TT for the tournament) hospital wise.

“We do not foresee that this will cause a problem. Dengue as you know is going on throughout the Caribbean and as far as Miami. It has not shutdown operations any activities throughout and we do not anticipate that it should in our country either.”

Baptiste-Cornelis said additional measures are being taken by the Health Ministry and local government corporations are coming on board with dengue control operations.

“We should be able to handle the next swing of dengue that comes through the country,” she said yesterday. The Health Minister added that the ministry expected that this would happen within the next three weeks.

Last year the Caribbean Games, which were to be held for the first time and hosted by Trinidad and Tobago were cancelled because of the threat of A-H1N1 virus commonly known as “swine flu.”

On July 30, Sport and Youth Affairs Minister Anil Roberts said $55 million in contracts were signed to stage the Caribbean Games.

Baptiste-Cornelis also said separate panels are investigating the reported dengue deaths of 19-year old Shiraz Khan and 12-year-old Vernissa Doon.

These panels will report their findings to Attorney General Anand Ramlogan by August 20.

She added that dengue protocols at all Regional Health Authorities are being strengthened and by Monday a customer complaints committee will be receiving reports from persons who feel aggrieved about the treatment they receive at public health institutions with respect to dengue.

Baptiste-Cornelis said within six months, this committee will submit a report on its findings to Cabinet.
Corporate TT backs Women’s Under-17 Football World Cup.
T&T Newsday Reports.

The FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup is exactly one month away and Corporate Trinidad and Tobago is throwing its full support behind the event.

The Local Organising Committee for the Tournament launched their first wave of corporate ticket distribution at its office located at St Vincent Street, Port-of-Spain yesterday.

Representatives from Neal and Massy Automotive Limited became the first corporate sponsors to collect tickets and LOC Officials say over the next week dozens of companies will follow suit.

Deputy CEO of the Local Organising Committee Nataki Kerr has described the response as “unparalleled”.

“Corporate Trinidad and Tobago plays an integral and essential role in the success of this tournament. The response from corporate citizens has been nothing less than phenomenal.

“The fact that companies are willing to give back to this nation is not only another true demonstration of the spirit of the beautiful game but it is a representation of the essence of this competition. I would like to express our profound gratitude to corporate TT for going well beyond the call of duty”

The tickets purchased by corporate Trinidad and Tobago will be distributed to various schools throughout the country.

Commenting on the initiative Kerr said: “The FIFA U-17 WWC is about giving back, sharing and improving the lives of our citizens. We needed to ensure that this competition is accessible to all, but most importantly to our children.

“This corporate initiative is yet another example of how we intend to partner with our various stakeholders to give back to the nation.”

Ticket distributions continue around the country. For further information please call 800-FANS (3267).

T&T wins inaugural CFU Women's U-17 Championship
cfufootball.org

Trinidad & Tobago captured the 2013 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Under 17 title, with a hard fought 1-0 victory over host team Haiti at the Sylvio Cator Stadium. The much anticipated Final was played in front of 6,800 spectators who braved the inclement weather to witness Tournament history as a Champion was crowned for the first time.

Haiti took the attack to the “Soca Princesses” from the opening whistle, much to the delight of the boisterous crowd which was ready to burst with excitement at the expectation of a Haitian goal. Trinidad & Tobago, on the other hand, started cautiously and paid special attention to Haitian playmaker Isnada Lebrun and the Tournament’s leading goal-scorer Batcheba Louis. The Soca Princesses managed to completely mark them out in the first half.

The game’s only goal came in the 40th minute on a play started by midfielder Chevonne John, who maintained her balance after bypassing her marker and passed the ball to Zoe Swift, who then found an open Shanelle Arjoon in the penalty area.  Arjoon hit past goalkeeper Jonie Gabriel to give Trinidad & Tobago the advantage.

Well done to the young women of the U17 team. Enjoy the moment and go on the bigger and better things. I am afraid however, as previously mentioned ,that they will not be kept together and made into a great squad than can qualify for a senior world cup. Here's hoping I'm wrong.

Parents rally behind U-17 women’s team.
By  Shaun Fuentes

Alex Alamandoz, father of national women’s Under-17 team goalkeeper Rebecca Alamandoz, believes that the local women’s programme can provide an excellent avenue for young females to improve their wellness and education status.

Alex was among the several parents who turned up at the Piarco International Airport on Tuesday to welcome the team members on their return from Haiti where they captured the Caribbean U-17 championships and qualified for the Concacaf Final round towards the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

“Football for girls and women is an excellent way for them to maintain a healthy lifestyle and make us of opportunities through the game for further education,” Alamandoz said.

He acknowledged the support of Sports Minister Anil Roberts and the Sports Ministry to the T&T team but feels that more can be done.

“We are thankful for every bit of support but of course there is always room for more to be done. We would like to see these girls comfortable and provided with a fair chance when they have to compete against the rest of the Concacaf region,” he said.

“They’ve sacrificed a lot and their hearts are in it and we the group of parents are behind them one hundred percent.”

The TTFA has received ongoing support from Roberts and his Ministry and the Sportt Company which covered the expenses for the U-17 team dating back to their opening qualifier in St Croix two months ago. Sportt also provided a sports psychologist Kamasha Robertson to accompany the team in Haiti and the players also underwent supervised classroom sessions relating to their school assignments.

Their next football assignment is in Jamaica from October 30 where they will compete with seven other teams including Mexico, United States and Canada among others for two spots at the U-17 World Cup in Costa Rica.

U-17 MVP says loss to Bermuda pushed T&T

National U-17 women’s team player Shenelle Arjoon, who was adjudged the Most Valuable Player of the just concluded Caribbean U-17 Women’s Championship in Haiti, says that the team got stronger after their 1-0 loss to Bermuda last month.

T&T kicked off the final CFU round in fine style with a 10-0 hammering of Grenada but they suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Bermuda.

“The game taught us some lessons and we decided that there was no way anyone else was going to beat us in the tournament,” Arjoon said on Tuesday on her return home with the rest of the team which is led by head coach Marlon Charles.

“We believed in our ability and we stuck together as a team. We were doing a lot of talking in the hotel and we were prepared to go the distance. Now we will try to improve our game and become even better for the next stage in Jamaica,” Arjoon added.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

T&T Under-17 Women grouped with USA for CONCACAF tournament.
T&T Express Reports.

Host country Jamaica has been drawn to open their account in the fourth edition of the CONCACAF Under-17 Women’s Football Championship with a tough assignment against Central American side El Salvador on October 30.

The junior Reggae Girls will also go up against Mexico and Haiti in Group A at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.

Defending champions the United States of America will play in Group B alongside Canada, Guatemala and Trinidad and Tobago.

The groupings were announced at a news conference at the Hilton Hotel on Monday.

“This tournament, the Under-17 FIFA Women’s Championship, is a very important tournament for our confederation,” said CONCACAF president Jeffrey Webb. “And I want to congratulate the host country Jamaica and the other seven countries to have qualified.”

Mexico, Canada, and the United States made the list as automatic qualifiers, with Jamaica doing so by virtue of being the host nation.

T&T and Haiti, winners and runners-up of the Caribbean U-17 Championship, qualified from the Caribbean Football Union (CFU), while El Salvador and Guatemala represent the Central America Football Union.

“This tournament will no doubt help to further highlight the city of Montego Bay and place the country in the minds of the decision-makers in FIFA that we are capable of hosting big competitions,” Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) boss Horace Burrell said.

The finalists will gain the two automatic qualification spots to the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup to be staged in Costa Rica next year.
