The VEN contingent includes U20s and U17s, not merely 17s.

U-17 women get set piece lesson from Venezuela.
By Sean Taylor (Express).

Three set-piece goals prevented the Trinidad and Tobago Under-17 women from capping off a festive day with a winning performance yesterday, as they slumped to a 3-1 defeat to Venezuela after taking an early lead at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella.

A girls' football clinic featuring several schools across the nation was held earlier on in the afternoon, however the match was the main attraction yesterday as it was held to celebrate CONCACAF Women's Day.

The U-17 team are currently preparing for the qualifiers for the Women's U-17 World Cup in Jordan next year, and were eager to entertain the home fans.

The match itself was entertaining and adventurous, with both teams unafraid to take the initiative and press forward. Venezuela threatened the T&T defence in the early stages, almost scoring from a corner in the seventh minute. Their forward Wilykary Camacho, was denied when goalkeeper Malaika Dedier made a brave one-on-one save.

The home team settled quickly however, and scored from a ninth-minute corner after Ranae Ward blew past her Venezuelan opponent on the left wing to win the set-piece. T&T defender Shenieka Paul scored with an imperious header high into the net.

Venezuela lost the plot as T&T found their rhythm, and should have scored again after Laurelle Theodore rounded the Venezeulan keeper, but then fluffed her shot.

Venezuela's main threat in the first half came from their set-pieces, but they lacked the height to truly unsettle the T&T defence. They came close 37 minutes in, with a direct free kick which flashed wide of the upright.

Their best chance came on the stroke of half time, when Dedier's poor handling allowed Michelle Baldallo to play a dangerous ball into the area. The T&T custodian's defence bailed her out however, as they were ever present to mop up the error.

The equaliser however came as a sucker punch; one that the Soca Princesses failed to recover from. Venezuela made good on their threat from free kicks in their first foray forward after the break, equalising with an innocuous header. Hilary Vergara was unmarked in the box when she nodded it in.

Alessia Bianchinni forced Dedier to tip over minutes later as she took a swing at goal from 30 yards. Ten minutes later, Bianchinni made good on her dead ball prowess when she beat the T&T keeper at the near post to send the South American visitors into the lead.

The rest of the match followed the same script; with Venezuela launching attack after attack on a T&T defence that was losing its concentration. When the ball hit the back of the net for the final time two minutes from the stoppage time, it was yet another free kick that bested Dedier. Bianchinni the perpetrator once more.

T&T coach Rajesh Latchoo admitted that his charges have their work cut out for them for the qualifiers.

"The Venezuelan team were well prepared, they had a tough defence," he said. He added: "The girls over committed themselves, they kept going through the player instead of for the ball." The U-17 Women's World Cup qualifiers will commence in July and the Finals themselves will be hosted in Jordan, 2016.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Coach Latchoo confident despite loss of players.
By Sean Taylor (Express).

U-17 women prepare for qualifiers

The Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Under-17 qualifiers have been rescheduled to August 20, according to the national women's coach Rajesh Latchoo.

The competition was originally carded to kick-off on July 15, and had to be postponed altogether as a result of deliberations within the CFU over a venue. Now the girls are preparing for an August 20 kick-off in St Kitts.

The postponement and eventual rescheduling caused the under-17 team no end of trouble, as there were players who were also eligible for the under-20 women's team who were about to start their respective qualifiers in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

As a result, Amarya Ellis, Kelsey Henry, Renae Ward and Raenah Campbell were all called up for national under-20 duty where they excelled in their two matches.

"They got playing experience which helped them," Latchoo told the Express yesterday.

"The experience they received from playing at a higher age group level will help the team in St Kitts."

The four players have already returned to the national under-17 set-up, however, some players may not be available because of school commitments abroad.

According to Latchoo, Alexis Fortune, Arianna Campbell and Ayanna Arneaud will return to Canada, while Amarya Ellis had to return to her club in Germany. Latchoo indicated that they are waiting to see if she would be allowed to return for the qualifiers in a fortnight's time.

Despite the setbacks, Latchoo said the team has had a lot of preparation due to the number of matches they played in the Women's League Football (WoLF).

"The WoLF has helped the team tremendously and helped the fringe players to get into the starting XI," he said. According to him, playing in a league where most of the players are already seniors has helped to prepare the team mentally for the qualifying challenge ahead.

The CFU qualifiers will now be played in St Kitts from August 20-27, and will serve as the initial stage for the U-17 Women's World Cup quest.

The final tournament will take place next year in Jordan.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

TT U-17 women in CFU qualifiers.
T&T Newsday Reports.

AN 18-MEMBER Trinidad and Tobago women’s Under-17 football team left for St Kitts/Nevis yesterday to participate in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) 2015 Women’s Under-17 World Cup First Round Qualifiers.

The squad, under the guidance of coach Rajesh Latchoo, will face Dominica on Saturday in their opening game of a doubleheader at the Elquemedo T Willet Park, formerly Grove Park, in Charleston, Nevis from 5.30 pm. TT will also face British Virgin Islands on Monday and hosts St Kitts/Nevis on Wednesday.

According to the CFU, eight teams will qualify for the CFU Final Round in Puerto Rico from November 13-19. The teams are hosts Puerto Rico, the winners from each of the three First Round groups as well as the three best runners-up.

Four teams will enter the knock-out stage of the semi-finals and the two finalists will join hosts Grenada to compete in the 2016 CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship. Three CONCACAF teams will qualify for the 2016 FIFA Under 17 Women’s World Cup in Jordan.

According to Latchoo, “we are focused on the task and the team is quite positive heading into this tournament. Despite the lack of warm-up games, this squad has been together for 15 months and this has played a big part in our readiness and shape. The players know each other very well.

They have been working together for an extensive period and there is a strong bond.” Latchoo said that participating in the Carapichaima Youth League and the WoLF League has been beneficial to the preparation of the team, which includes players from the Under-15 team which finished third at the 2014 CONCACAF Girls U-15 Girls Championship.

Trinidad and Tobago team: Malaika Dedier, Klil Keshwar, Ayanna Arneaud (goalkeepers); Shalisha King, Natisha John, Raynicia Charles, Brittney Williams, Tsainne Fernandez, Shenieka Paul (defenders); Nia Honore, Kelsey Henry, Ranae Ward, Arianna Campbell, Alexis Fortune (midfielders); Raenah Campbell, Laurelle Theodore, Kedie Johnson, Salina Isaac, Kaydeen Jack (strikers).

Latchoo goes for glory with U-17 women’s team
By Shaun Fuentes (TTFA)

He started his coaching career in the men’s game, leading the likes of Joe Public and Caledonia AIA and serving as a coaching instructor for the T&T Football Association but now Rajesh Latchoo is focused on leading a national women’s team to a Fifa World Cup.

His next quest begins with the national Under-17 women’s team which begins Caribbean qualification in St Kitts/Nevis this weekend.

The Princes Town-born coach is a student of the game and is continuously trying to broaden his knowledge as well as pass it on to other local coaches.

“It is a privilege to be at the helm of a national women’s team but it also holds a bit of bittersweet experience. It is not as ideal as I would like it to be in terms of resources and access to facilities,” Latchoo said.

“But as a coach you learn to adapt and work with what you have. It is always good to represent your country and contribute to the achievements that will improve the country’s image despite the challenges and setbacks. To me it is about proving that the diversity of our nation is a strength that knows no limit to what we can achieve as a people,” he said in response to what has led to his commitment to women’s football.

Latchoo was also the head coach of the Petrotrin Oilers team in the inaugural Women’s Premier League last month.

“The highlights of the job are the achievements of qualifying, seeing players improving and knowing that we are able to over come challenges and setbacks. The challenges all stem from the lack of recognition that women football is given. This causes financial struggles that often lead to preparation problems and most importantly affect that main product, the players.”

He believes there is potential for growth of women’s football in T&T.

“The potential is exponential. There is no limit to what the women’s football can achieve in T&T with the right support. When you look at the senior women’s team and you see how they continue to pave the way for the youths despite not having that support, it gets you upset to see the way they are treated compared to how the men’s team are treated. I personally believe that women’s football has a brighter future that men’s football and they deserve more recognition and support,” Latchoo said boldly.

“The more girls that play football at youth level means the more girls will be able to compete for a spot on the national in the future and we can ideally end up with 8-10 quality players for each position locally.”

Latchoo’s best achievement in women’s football was leading the T&T U-15 team to third place at the Concacaf U-15 Championship last year. From this weekend he leads T&T in qualifiers against host St Kitts/Nevis, British Virgin Islands and Dominica in the first phase of qualification for the 2016 Fifa U-17 Women’s World Cup in Jordan.

TT U-17 women footballers drub Dominica 4-0
T&T Newsday Reports.

TRINIDAD and Tobago’s Under-17 women’s footballers made a winning start to their Caribbean Under- 17 qualifying series with a 4-0 victory over Dominica at the Elquemedo Willett Park, in St Kitts/Nevis on Saturday.

After a goalless opening half in which the Domincans put up a dour struggle, Kaydeen Jack opened the scoring for the young Trinis in the 66th minute And then the floodgates opened up as there were three further goals scored in rapid succession.

Raenah Campbell gave the young Trinis their second goal after 68 minutes, and in the 72nd, Nia Honore made it 3-0 But the young Trinis had to wait until two minutes from the end (88th minute) before Ranae Ward gave them the fourth.

Coach Rajesh Latchoo, though pleased with the opening win, said he didn’t feel his team played to its full potential.

“I was pleased with most aspects of our performance but not our finishing,” Latchoo said.

“We had at least 15 shots on goal and only converted four. I was a little bit disappointed because our performance was not a reflection of the players potential. We are still pleased with the three points and now we’ll be looking ahead to finishing the group with two more wins,” he added.

The TT Under-17s will next play British Virgin Islands at 5.30 pm today and close off their group assignment on Wednesday against hosts St Kitts/ Nevis.

TT are vying for a place in the CFU Final round in Puerto Rico from November 13-19.

Hosts Puerto Rico gets automatic qualification and will be joined by the winners from each of the three first round groups as well as the best runners- up in the four team groups, the second best runners-up in the four group teams and best runners-up in the three team groups.

Four teams will enter the knockout stage of the semi-finals and the two finalists will join hosts Grenada to compete in the 2016 CONCACAF Women’s U-17 Championship.

Three CONCACAF teams will qualify for the 2016 FIFA Under- 17 Women’s World Cup in September next year in Jordan.

T&T U-17 Women defeat BVI 8-0
By Shaun Fuentes (TTFA)

Trinidad and Tobago’s Under 17 Women’s team completed another convincing victory at the Caribbean Football Union preliminary qualifiers with an 8-0 thumping of British Virgin Islands at the Elquemedo Willett Park in St Kitts/Nevis this morning.

The game was rescheduled from the previous evening due to the Tropical Storm watch.

Nia Honore led the way for T&T with a hattrick, scoring her goals in the 29th, 47th and 65th minutes. Kaydeen Jack notched a double in the 19th and 67th minutes while Ranae Ward (44th), Laurelle Theodore (88th) and captain Kelsey Henry (91st) grabbed a goal each to complete the onslaught.

The win left T&T atop the four-team table with six points from two games, ahead of hosts St Kitts/Nevis (3 points) which faces Dominica on Tuesday evening.

“It’s a good feeling to come out on top in the manner we did today,” head coach Rajesh Latchoo told TTFA Media. “Overall I was pleased with the effort. Our finishing was much better today than the previous game against Dominica. We will be looking to finish with a third win tomorrow and top the group in the process,” he added

T&T’s closing group phase game against St Kitts/Nevis remains on schedule for 8pm on Wednesday. The Latchoo coached-team have virtually secured their place in the CFU Final round in Puerto Rico in November. T&T are vying for qualification for the 2016 FIFA Under 17 Women’s World Cup in Jordan.

T&T Women’s U-17 team to stay extra days in St Kitts due to Tropical Storm warning
By Shaun Fuentes (TTFA)

Having secured their berth in the Caribbean Football Union Women’s Under 17 Finals, this country’s National Under 17 Women’s team will have an extended stay in St Kitts/Nevis due to delays caused by a Tropical Storm Warning.

T&T completed a 4-0 victory over the hosts on the island of Nevis on Wednesday night. Following the match, the team was able to arrive in St Kitts via ferry transportation from Nevis and is now based at the Bird Rock Beach Hotel. Currently the RL Bradshaw International Airport is closed until further notice.

This therefore means that the team, comprising of 19 players and six staff members has had to extend its stay at the Bird Rock Beach Hotel. TTFA National Teams operations manager William Wallace has confirmed that with assistance from the Sportt Company of Trinidad and Tobago, all additional expenses for accommodation and meals for the extended days will be taken care of to ensure all members of the T&T contingent are lodged at the hotel.

“We are on top of the situation and at this time, just after 4pm, communication between the FA and the hotel along with Sportt has taken place. The Sportt Company has committed to making the payments and have already requested the wire transfer information from the hotel to ensure the team is accommodated for the extra days,” Wallace stated.

“We have been informed that the CFU will not take care of the additional days and therefore, it is now the responsibility of the member association to ensure its national team is accommodated.”

Team manager Lyndelle Hoyte-Sanchez said the contingent was safe and in good spirits.

“We are safe and being taken good care of by the hotel manager and staff. We wish to thank the FA and the Sportt Company for its assistance in the matter. At this time, our team staff is also ensuring that the players are in good spirits. Our main objective was to come here and do well in the tournament and we have done this. Our focus now will be the CFU Finals in Puerto Rico. Once the airport reopens and we can get on the next available flight, then we should be out of St Kitts by this weekend,” Hoyte Sanchez told TTFA Media.

This is second Tropical storm warning for St Kitts/Nevis within a week after the “Danny” forced a delay in T&T’s second match against British Virgin Islands which T&T won 8-0 on Tuesday morning. The Rajesh Latchoo-coached team completed wins in its three games to top the group with nine points. The CFU Finals will take place in Puerto Rico in November leading up to the CONCACAF Finals and the 2016 FIFA Under 17 Women’s World Cup in Jordan.

T&T advances without conceding a goal

T&T Under-17 women’s Soca Warriors recorded yet another shut-out victory, 4–0 over host St Kitts/Nevis to top their Caribbean Football Union Group Three World Cup preliminary round qualifiers at the Elquemedo T Willet Park, Charlestown, St Kitts, on Wednesday night.

Speaking yesterday, Sheldon Phillips, general secretary of the T&T Football Federation confirmed that the team will not returning home until Saturday, and added that everything was in place to make their extended stay away from home a comfortable one.

Phillips added: “The Caribbean Football Union sent out some information to all the federations involved in which they explained what was happening, and on our end we had discussions with and approached the Sports Company of T&T and Ministry of Sports, for the necessary finances to deal with the team’s unplanned extended stay in St Kitts/Nevis.

“We have been in contact with coach Latchoo and the team, and all is positive within the camp as be expected after having topped their qualifying group.”

Stranded in St Kitts
By STEPHON NICHOLAS (NEWSDAY).

A Tropical Storm Warning yesterday left the Trinidad and Tobago Under-17 women in St Kitts in distress after all flights were cancelled.

The TT Under- 17s, fresh off their CFU 1st round qualifiers where they reeled off three convincing victories including a 4-0 drubbing of their hosts on Wednesday, were expected to return home yesterday. But with flights grounded because of the Tropical Storm Warning, the national team were forced to bunker down in St Kitts.

This caused tremendous concern to team members though as the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) revealed they would not be able to foot the bill for the extra days the team had to stay.

And with the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) scrambling to source funds for their extended stay, yesterday proved somewhat of a nightmare for members of the team.

A local television broadcast last night quoted the brother of one of the TT footballers as saying some players went without food for most of the day as their hotel ceased all services to them past their check-out time.

Sheldon Phillips, General Secretary of the TT FA, expounded on the situation.

“All the teams’ flights were cancelled but there was actually some concern that they would be stuck in Nevis but they were able to get over despite the ferry shutting down service. They are set to leave on Saturday.

“They are staying at a hotel in St Kitts and we are working out something right now. CFU had indicated they weren’t in a position to take care of the extra day so we’re going to have to foot the bill or find a backer to foot the bill. That’s not going to be an issue, it looks like we’re going to secure that,” he said.

He stressed though that the players are comfortable and “as happy as you can imagine them to be after such a dominating performance, scoring 16 goals and didn’t have a goal scored against them. Everyone is comfortable and safe and in good spirits.”

Asked to divulge who the TTFA has approached to assist in the expenses, Phillips revealed: “We’re speaking with the (Sport) Ministry and (it’s set) they’ll be well taken care of. I want to acknowledge the Sport Ministry and the Sport Company for coming in and helping us in this situation.” Minister of Sport Brent Sancho though was not flattered by the compliment paid to his Ministry and the Sport Company who stepped in to provide accommodation and meals for the athletes at the Bird Rock Hotel in St Kitts.

“That’s not good enough for me. I am mortified to know our young women were stranded in St Kitts with the hotel about to kick them out,” he told Newsday yesterday.

The Sports Minister continued, “Why are they operating? What is their existence? What have they done with the money they got from the Gold Cup? We paid travel, accommodation, players, coaching staff. What have they done?” TT U-17 Team manager Lyndelle Hoyte Sanchez, in a TTFA media release said the contingent was safe and in good spirits.

“We are safe and being taken good care of by the hotel manager and staff. We wish to thank the FA and the Sport Company for its assistance in the matter. At this time, our team staff is also ensuring that the players are in good spirits. We are just experiencing some of the after effects like wind and rainfall but nothing too serious.”

What I don't understand is that this competition is under the CFU remit. They should have provided insurance against situations like this - especially in the Caribbean at this time of year.
There is no way that the girls should have been forced out.
In fact, I find that the hotel acted very uncharitably. This is an emergency situation. Even the local Minister of Sport or Govt could have resolved this matter. They are the hosts after all.
I know damn well that Sancho would not have let a group of teenage girls from another country get evicted from a hotel in T&T in these circumstances.

The entire CFU and to an extent Concacaf needs fixing.

I hope if Nakhid don't win in FIFA he strongly consider running for either.

I am really not happy with this response from out Sports Minister. This was an emergency situation that no one could have for scene.

Latchoo pleased with U-17s showing.
T&T Guardian Reports.

…to refocus for next phase

T&T Under-17 women Soca Warriors Rajesh Latchoo says he was very pleased with his team’s performance during their Caribbean Football Union Group Three preliminary qualifiers in St Kitts/Nevis which ended last Wednesday.

Playing in the four-team round-robin tournament, the T&T young women trounced St Kitts/Nevis 4-0, Dominica 4-0 and British Virgin Islands 8-1 to end with maximum nine points at the Elquemedo T Willet Park, Charlestown, Nevis.

However, following their 4-0 victory over St Kitts/Nevis on Wednesday, the T&T contingent was forced to remain in St Kitts for a couple additional nights due to the Tropical Storm Erika warning.

The players and staff members departed St Kitts in two batches on Saturday and Sunday.

And following his return home on Sunday, Latchoo said he was pleased with the showing of the team in their opening group phase.

A former coach at Joe Public, Latchoo said, “I was quite pleased with the way the players handled everything, They adapted well to the conditions and despite some of the challenges with the weather and the delay in matches, they kept it together and really demonstrated that they were the best team in the group.”

“Nia Honore had a fabulous tournament and has a very bright future. The captain Kelsey Henry was solid as usual and deserved her goal.

"Laurel Theodore played her role well as our impact player in the final game, coming on and getting many strikes on goal. Arianna Campbell was most effective in midfield during first half. Our back four and goalkeepers were consistent, they completed our objective on keeping a clean sheet. And I couldn’t have asked for more, " added Latchoo

Latchoo also paid tribute to the work of the technical staff saying: “The support staff has been tremendous in making the girls comfortable off the field. We thank God for keeping us safe during the first storm, Danny, and then being able to come through the second one (Erika) without any problems.”

“Now we’ll settle down again and start to refocus on the next phase which is crucial as we need to remain consistent and take this all the way into the Concacaf finals and then the World Cup in Jordan next year,” he stated.

In the CFU eight-team final round qualifiers, T&T will come up against Haiti, Dominican Republic and Barbados in Group B round-robin play while Cuba, Bermuda, hosts Puerto Rico and Jamaica will compete in Group A from November 13-18 in San Juan.

At the end of the group stages, the top two teams in each group will advance to the semifinals from which the finalist will join host Grenada as qualifiers to the 2016 Concacaf Women’s U-17 Championship from which three Concacaf teams will qualify for the Fifa Under-17 Women’s World Cup.

During the other preliminary groups, Cuba, Haiti and Jamaica topped their respective Groups One, Two and Four, in the same order, in the preliminary round group stage which ran from July 15 to 19 in three countries.

In Group One, Cuba garnered nine points from three games beating Dominican Republic (2-0), Cayman Islands (6-0) and Bahamas (5-1) while Dominican Republic was second after topping Bahamas 2-0 and Cayman Islands 3-2 in their other matches.

Haiti topped Group Two by winning both games and gaining six points, over Curacao (7-1) and Bermuda (4-0) while the latter was second after a 6-1 defeat of Curacao.

And Jamaica racked up maximum nine points from three games in Group Four thanks to victories, against Barbados (2-1), St Lucia (14-0) and Suriname (1-0). The Bajans advanced as group runner-up with wins over Suriname (2-1) and St Lucia (3-0).

Women’s team waiting on documentation for CFU Finals
By Sean Taylor (Express).

Visas put U-17s on hold

Visa problems have hit the Trinidad and Tobago's Women's Under-17 team ahead of the Caribbean Football Union Final Round qualifiers for next year's 2016 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.

At the moment, the team is still waiting for the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) to arrange visas for the players, as well as return tickets for the 25 players and coaching staff, who are carded to travel to Puerto Rico to face the Dominican Republic, Barbados and Haiti in the CFU Final Round from November 12.

T&T Women’s U-17 in the clear as TTFA acquire visas.
By Sean Taylor (Express).

The issues surrounding the acquisition of travelling documents for the Trinidad and Tobago women’s Under-17 football team preparing to head to Puerto Rico next month were settled on Thursday as the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFA) was able to secure funding for the visas and passports for the team members.

According to Tim Kee, the TTFA was able to finalise all expenses regarding the upcoming trip to Puerto Rico for the U-17 team.

“The U-17 Team has been taken care of,” he said. “We have found all $23,000 that it has cost us to acquire the visas for the players, as well as passports, as well as over $200,000 to take care of the other expenses that would have incurred naturally when you have a tournament as this.”

The TTFA president had made a plea of help to the parents of the U-17 charges involved in the national set up.
