Afridi had been fined three million rupees by the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) for ball tampering during the one-day series against Australia earlier this year.
However, the leg-spinning all-rounder was awarded the highest central contract from the organization last week.
Pakistan selected its 15-player squad earlier this month but had delayed picking the captain.
Pakistan is in Group A with Australia and Bangladesh
