New Caribbean league created for clubs
« on: March 26, 2010, 06:17:08 PM »
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP)—A new Caribbean league involving clubs across the region will be launched next year, the Puerto Rico football federation said on Friday.

Clubs from Trinidad, Jamaica, St. Kitts, Haiti, Bermuda, Antigua, Guyana, Dominica and others will participate, though it is too early to say what the format will look like or how many games will be played each year.

Joe Serralta, president of Puerto Rico’s Football Federation, said he has been pushing for the league’s creation since 2004.

“With a population of more than 40 million people, this Caribbean league can and should be developed as one of the most important of the CONCACAF,” Serralta said.

Caribbean officials needed the United Soccer Leagues—the largest organization of elite-level soccer in North America, but which also oversees leagues in Canada and the Caribbean—to agree to the creation of the new competition.

The agreement between the USL and the Puerto Rico Soccer League will give the island’s eight club teams—plus the USL-level Puerto Rico Islanders—an opportunity for more games and exposure.

Maybe this Caribbean league will fare better than its predecessors.  Good idea though.

Can anyone explain why there is a need for the USL to approve such a venture? What if they see it as a threat to their US leagues, then what?

I'm more interested in seeing if Jack's CFU sees it as a threat to their Club Championship.

There have been efforts in the past e.g. CPFL

and the CMLF

in particular
CMFL, CFU at loggerheads

I agree that transportation may be an issue but i still think it is a good idea if properly executed.

Gonna be very hard to do though. Crowd support lacking, transportation is paper. Where they gonna get all that revenue?

if people will not come out to see macoya (Joe Public) play San Juan (Jabloteh) why would they come out to see Macoya versus Bayamon.

everybody does want to think big.

Maybe we need to think small.

when big big mexican and Mls side come to Tnt stadium still empty so standard of play is not the draw. The issue is pips

if Barca and Man u show up stadium will ram.

nobody in TnT not rating no team from Puerto Rico to say well they going to show up to see a game and no body in Puerto Rico rushing to see a side name Joe Public from Trinidad Y Tobago.

the hype factor will not be there.

This will be a hard sell.
