GENERAL ELECTIONS COMING SOON IN 2010 !

The Prime Minister drops a bombshell in Chaguaramas. The Opposition forces in Chaguanas were unaware of it.
General elections this year.

This was the clear indication given by Prime Minister Patrick Manning when he addressed the People’s National Movement’s (PNM) special convention this afternoon at the Chaguaramas Convention Centre.

The Prime Minister, the party’s political leader, told thousands of cheering delegates that the opposition had been calling for a general election and he wanted to ask the party to get ready for a general election.

Screening of candidates will begin on April 7 and it will start in his constituency, San Fernando East.

The Prime Minister did not give a date for the election but warned as he has been doing for the past couple of elections that the party will beat the Opposition in all the country’s cardinal points.

The Prime Minister also revealed that the party would be applying to the Commissioner of Police next month for an application to hold a demonstration in Port of Spain on the date when the motion of no confidence would come up in Parliament.

Mr Manning’s election announcement came around 3:15 p.m, towards the end of his address to delegates at the convention called to celebrate the life of Dr Eric Williams, the party’s founder, who died exactly 29 years ago.

He dealt with the Government’s achievements, pointing out that there has been a reduction in cocaine coming to the country with the country’s new radar system and interceptor boats. In a few months, this marked reduction would case a flare up among gangs, he warned.

He said that kidnapping was a thing of the past and claimed that the murder count had dropped.

Meanwhile, the Opposition forces berated the Government at a rally at Saith Park, Chaguanas, unaware of the Prime Minister’s bombshell.

Rowley not likely to contest

While the party swings into full election mode yesterday speculation was rife as to who will or will not get the party’s nod to contest a seat. Party sources said Diego Martin West MP Keith Rowley was not likely to contest his seat. “This is because he will have to appear before the screening committee on which Manning is the chairman. He is out long time and he knows it,” the source added. Brigid Annisette-George, meanwhile, has been asked to consider contesting Diego Martin West by some constituents. They are also looking at Minister of Culture Marlene Mc Donald, MP for Port-of-Spain South. Rowley could not be reached for comment. It is unclear whether Port-of-Spain North/St Ann’s West MP Gary Hunt will be selected following his poor handling of the controversy surrounding the purchase of a $2 million national flag.

Prime Minister Patrick Manning put the country in election mode yesterday, when he announced that April 7 would be the start of screening of 41 new candidates. The screening will begin in Manning’s San Fernando East constituency, with the other 40 electoral districts following. Though he did not announce the general election date, Manning said screening would begin two days before Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is expected to file a motion of no confidence against him in Parliament. Manning was delivering the feature address during the People’s National Movement’s special convention at Chaguaramas Convention Centre, causing a packed hall to erupt and chant: “Long live Manning.” Manning said the same day the Opposition intended to file the motion, the PNM would make an application to the acting Commissioner of Police, James Philbert, to have a demonstration against their move.

Kamla: I'm ready for any election
Anna Ramdass
Source: http://www.trinidadexpress.com/index.pl/nart?id=161616473

Prime Minister Patrick Manning’s days are numbered, said United National Congress (UNC) Political Leader and Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar, assuring she was ready for any election.

Manning, also political leader of the ruling People’s National Movement (PNM), speaking at the party’s Chaguaramas convention yesterday, sent a message to Persad-Bissessar that elections were around the corner, and the PNM would start screening candidates from April 8.

Persad-Bissessar, speaking at the Voice of the People rally at Saith Park, Chaguanas, responded to Manning’s announcement, saying: ’So let me answer you, Mr Manning, don’t back back on that promise, you know, Mr Manning. Don’t back back at all because Mr Manning knows he cannot stop the wave.’

On April 7, Persad-Bissessar would be piloting a motion of no-confidence in Manning in the Parliament.

Yesterday, she said: ’Mr Manning, you could screen who you want, I want to ask the people, the thousands here today do you have confidence in Mr Manning as your prime minister?’

’No!’ shouted the crowd.

Persad-Bissessar said T&T was ready for change
’A carnival of corruption and excessiveness is parading through our bloodied streets, showing off its self-glorification of a leader’s ego. But understand this his power is derived through you. Vox populi, vox dei; the voice of the people is the voice of God. The people determine what becomes of him. Each day, he grows weaker before an increasingly agitated and angry population. He must know his political days are numbered,’ she said.

’Surely, he doesn’t need his prophetess to see the end is in sight. People are fed up. If anything has brought us together, it is the outrage at what the Manning administration has done to our country,’ said Persad-Bissessar.

The UNC political leader said the entire nation was reeling from scandal after scandal as people struggle to survive.

’And so, across all boundaries, we are brought together by a common intention to defend our rights and freedoms, to take back our country. Poverty has united us. Fear has held us close. Thirst and hunger have huddled us together,’ she said.

Who to vote for ???

In one corner PNM led by Patrick Manning and a seer woman

In the next corner UNC with an alliance of COP led by Kamla a woman, that has on going difficulties with 2 party members (Panday, Ramnath) who main agenda is to make sure she doesn't win elections....even if to have side  with Patrick Manning.

In this corner ME who ain't know what the fack too do and knows for a fact that many people feel the same way, which would eventually lead to PNM getting another term.

Voice of the People rally a success
Saturday 27th March, 2010
Source: http://ctntworld.com/LocalArticles.aspx?id=19428

The passion of the people was felt at the UNC's Voice of the People Rally today.

Speakers voiced their frustrations at the current PNM administration, calling for change.

But two speakers cried out for petty differences to be put aside calling for real unity in the country.

Once again, an assembly of leaders is calling for the removal of the current administration.

Some even took a humorous approach.

Two speakers chose to rise above the political differences and called for unity among the people of Trinidad and Tobago.

NJAC chief servant Makandal Daaga asked if we had learned anything from the 1970s revolution. He recalled the march to Caroni where he said people opened their doors to total strangers because they saw beyond race or creed. They saw only human beings.

The rally was a strong show of unity of opposition forces. Rubadiri Victor, Stephen Cadiz, and David Abdullah were also feature speakers.

PNM Secretary General says convention’s attendees “significant”
Saturday 27th March, 2010
Source: http://www.ctntworld.com/LocalArticles.aspx?id=19426

PNM Secretary General Martin Joseph said the party's convention was meant to show the national community that it is not down for the count.

The main hall at the Chaguaramas Convention Centre was packed to capacity and two other large rooms were set up for supporters to view the proceedings on large screens while others listened to speakers outside.

Asked for an estimate of the amount of supporters who attended the convention, Mr. Joseph said the numbers were significant

Rowley to Manning
Ria Taitt Political Editor
Monday, March 29th 2010

Responding to the Prime Minister’s call to the party to submit nominations for a general election, controversial Diego Martin West MP Dr Keith Rowley has signaled that he intends to submit his name as a candidate.

Rowley, who was in Barbados and missed the party’s special convention on Saturday, spoke with the Express via phone from Barbados yesterday, one day after Prime Minister Patrick Manning, his political leader, called for nominations for candidates for the general election. Screening of candidates begins on April 7.

Many feel that a general election signals the political end of Rowley’s career as a PNM MP... more... http://www.trinidadexpress.com/index.pl/nart?id=161616970

PM blanks Gray-Burke
Kristy Ramnarine
Monday, March 29th 2010
Source: http://www.trinidadexpress.com/index.pl/nart?id=161617082

Prime Minister Patrick Manning has turned down an invitation by Archbishop Barbara Gray-Burke to attend this year’s Spiritual Shouter Baptist Liberation Day celebrations.

Gray-Burke, a former UNC senator, said she sent an invitation to Manning sometime in January but was informed that he would be unable to attend.

She has also had no success in meeting with the Prime Minister to discuss the proposed primary school in Maloney.

’Last year when we met with him he said he have no money because of the recession,’ she said on Saturday.

’I feel deeply hurt when I see a Pentecostal church being built ( at the Heights of Guanapo) and there are no approvals. We have all the approvals and we can’t get the funding. I feel he should have appreciated us but he has sidelined us.

’I wrote him in January about this year’s holiday and asked him to attend and his secretary said he is unable to attend. I’ve been trying to get an audience with him to discuss the school as well, but have not gotten any feedback on that. I never did him anything and I don’t know why he treating me so.’
