I don't live in Chaguanas East and I am not voting for Jack Warner. Neither am I in St. Joseph voting for Volney. If I had that privilege, the choice would be easily made.
It sounds, that by your thinking, a vote for the coalition is a vote for either of these gentlemen. Then I'm sure you can understand why some people think that a vote for any PNM candidate is a vote (and endorsement) for Manning and his herd of sheep.

it's sad that in less than 5 years we'll be in the same situation again, where emphasis will be placed on how straight your hair is and NOT what's really best for the individual and country. It's  also sad that so much is based on hearsay and not real facts when people speak on this forum about why or not they support a party.

Just a question, do you care to share some of your experiences about this suffering you are experiencing?

And I hope you don't think im being facetious, i just think of my own situation. Where i was 10 years ago and where i am now. I was never the recipient of any government handout other than the public utilities that everybody else gets. I went to school, i was able to graduate and acquire employment, i am trying to start my own business on the side. Everything aint perfect but at the same time i think of what i was able to achieve by my own valition and efforts and to ensure that i will not suffer myself in any undue way. If you presensent your case i will accept that. Please don't try to include other persons experiences in your case.

I want to know what are  your own sufferings.

1. Long wait at the hospital & inadequate facilities
2. Getting stressed out having to sit at traffic lights and wait in line while ppl come allong side me and cut in making me miss the light. Where are the police?
3. Not being free to roam the country while feeling safe.
4. Thinking i was earning a good salary only to realise that the high food prices making it smaller and smaller
5. raise in gas prices
6. poor roads causing me to constantly repair the car
7.having to listen to news everyday and ppl getting killed and no-one being put in jail for it
8. The paranoia of knowing that one day the oil will run out and we have no alternatives to bring money into the country
9. the paranoia knowing that we wasting we farm land and cant feed ourselves.
10.having multiple drug blocks around my neighborhood
11.the stress from hearing bout the billions lost from cost overruns on state projects
12.the stress of knowing tat we host summit and only we Project Manger signed the treaty
13.Poor water supply and quality
14.High electricity price
15.the stress from watching the ruling party blatantly  disregard the law on more than one occasions
16.the anger from watching a whole gang of CEPEP ppl come to clean the clean part of the drain in front my house whilst leaving the dirty part.

17. worst of all, having to watch the arrogance of the PM and his croonies when they address us, and when they dont answer questions placed by the ooposition.

I dunno, maybe these things does only happen to me yes......cause the way u talk, these "sufferings"  not applicable to u

Your greviances are your greviances, i will make no attempt to down play or reduce them as you cited them as relative to you, especially when it comes to the safety of yourself and possibly ones in your care.

I can only speak for myself having lived both here and the US for a period of time and it has given me a kind of perspective based on my experience.

I've never been subject to crime here but i've been robbed at gunpoint twice in washington dc
I get my garbage picked up in trini everyday here but in the US it's only done once a week
I've had an accident in the US that i had to go to hospital in an ambulance. Think of me a student facing a 1,500USD medical bill. I got swift healthcare but ask anybody in trini to pay equivalent for that.
We marvel at first world societies but the things we don't like about them are the same exact things that make them first world.

I've learnt in this life that nowhere is perfect, and while its not an excuse on any government's part for not delivering services that a government should. But i find folks seem to complain conveniently, all the things you cite will probably will not change after this election regardless who forms the next government. Hence i believe its a personal responsibility to ensure that you do what you have to do to make your existance in our country and by extension this world as comfortable as possible .

But we have our franchise to vote for who we think will do the best job of government and i will exercise my right, after that i let the chips fall where they may. I have my opinions on how things should be done in the country but who knows if what i think will work. Government is simply a bunch of individuals like you and me who will have their own ideas on how a country should be run and as in most things in life, somethings will work well, others will work not so well, and others won't work at all. Collective assesment will determine whether they get to continue or whether another set of individuals will get a chance.

You say that these sufferings i cited may not applicable to me. Well, i can't say that they don't. I read the news and suffer the same woes of traffic and cost of living etc. I guess i just deal with them in a different way. I not living my life to be unhappy and stressed over things i can't control. If a man decide to use the shoulder while i sit in the traffic, well he may get away once or twice or more. But there is the chance that he may get caught and will have to pay 1,000 dollars when i know for a fact that I won't.

My only criticism of our people is that we sometimes fail to understand that a working government is all of us. We all have our roles to play in our different spheres to shape the society and I think that is where we need to educate and challenge each other. If every father does what a father is supposed to do, we would not have the level of crime that we have now. Is it the government's role to be the father in a home?  We complain about flooding but when we see fellow citizens litter indiscriminantly we turn a blind eye (yes me too). I believe if someone feels strongly enough about how things are being run, or not being run. They will offer themselves up, deliver their ideologies and hope that their message is accepted.

I think that the current government and this prime minister, with the exposure of UDECOTT and the Guanapo church, is on the brink of getting caught red handed in serious acts of corruption.

Calling an early election allows them to quickly strangle the populace another 5 years of power before the political damage is suffered and before the opposition has a chance to organize itself and become a real option.

I agree that both parties have expressed overconfidence.The PNM however has used the words 'if they win then .......' fairly often as part of their scare tactics. Rowley in his second address to Diego Martin even said 'it is possible that we might lose.' He repeated these words at another public meeting at Five Rivers Junction where he along with Fitzgerald Hinds supported Neil Parsanlal.

The presumption of victory or at least the projection of confidence is normal. Take the NNV leader for instance, Fuad Abu Bakr , who said that he was confident that he had 8 seats in the bag, a claim that can only be described as a flamboyant hallucination.

I think that the current government and this prime minister, with the exposure of UDECOTT and the Guanapo church, is on the brink of getting caught red handed in serious acts of corruption.

Calling an early election allows them to quickly strangle the populace another 5 years of power before the political damage is suffered and before the opposition has a chance to organize itself and become a real option.

The aspect about UDECOTT could be the gospel truth but the aspect of the opposition being a unified force is a fallacy. Is a case of been there done that. Lets see if they loose lets see how long hey stay together. The average person is of the opinion that they will not be able to hold it together so lets see if they can stay together for 5 years.

If they can stay together if they loose people may take them serious at present they are a pick up side.

Lefty,  ah know it not easy,  but at the end of the day you have to realize that both parties will have die hard supporters that leave a lot to desire, but you are not voting for the supporters you voting for who you want to represent you in parliament.  Who is going to seek your interest?  Do you believe that is now the PNM because some UNC supporters hurled racial slurs at you?

Which would be people like Jack Warner... and Herbert Volney.

Come Tuesday next week, its a continuation of the same assness - doesn't matter if it's the same people or ah coalition. Same assness will happen. Some of allyuh doing like it will be the dawning of a new beginning. Try and remember is the same set of recycled politicians.

All these policies/promises will come and meet we still pending whenever next elections is called.

Overheard in the Four Roads Hi-Lo supermarket last week: “Boy, yuh make up yuh mind yet? Make sure yuh vote for we or dey go send we back to Africa.” The speaker was an elderly pensioner talking to another.

logoThis election was always about race. Even if scientists say there is no such thing, anecdotes trump research any time. I had intended to repeat the litany of woes about the present Manning administration: lack of governance; the hundreds of millions wasted on grand-charging at summits; empty skyscrapers; kidnappings which the Government thinks is a joke; The failure to stop the 3,000 murders and the unspoken fear that the ruling party was part of it through its dealings with “community leaders;” Cepep; Udecott and the Uff Commission of Enquiry; Calder Hart and his unbelievable closeness to the Prime Minister; perjury allegations that have gone nowhere; Rowley’s accusations and flip flop;

Political interference with the appointments of the Commissioner of Police and the Director of Public Prosecution; the illegal coat-of-arms on the PM’s car; the condition of President’s House; the Integrity Commission debacles; the indecent dependency on foreign consultants and Chinese workers; candalous procurement processes; The hasty attempts to arrest a Chief Justice on a Friday afternoon; discrimination against the Maha Sabha in granting a FM radio broadcasting licence; the emasculation of the EMA; the illegal rally in Woodford Square under police protection whilst a motion against the Government was being debated across the street; the $2 million flag; the abandoned hospitals and health centres; The 30 per cent SEA failures year after year with no one knowing why; the lack of diversification of the economy whilst inviting foreign companies to exploit gas and oil under conditions unknown to most of the population; the squandering of oil and gas money for a second time, $300 billion gone; the deal with Abu Bakr prior to the 2002 election, as outlined by the Privy Council;

The inefficient Licensing Offices, District Revenue Offices, courts, Passport Office and ministries; the traffic; the enormity of corruption within the state-owned special purpose entities; the Tarouba stadium; the scholarship scandal involving the Ministry of Culture; NAPA; the Scarborough Hospital; the state-of-the-art radar that does not work; the three blimps; the fast-speed radar boats and the attack helicopters; the destruction of the Grand Stand and a large part of the Savannah; The crippling of the calypso tents; the ICC Cricket World Cup “brown bag“ fiasco; the desalination plants; the wonderful smelters; the berm at Beetham; a Minister of Finance and author of a book on ethics who did not understand the meaning of “fixed deposit;” Clico; The property tax; the “palace;” the bacchanal surrounding the Guanapo church and the threats to reporters investigating it; the blatant attempts to give the Government control over the judiciary as outlined by the present Chief Justice; The constitutional draft, written by unknowns, that would make the PM an “executive president” with control over everything, a la Burnham; the incom- prehensible security details and blaring sirens that we have had to tolerate in an island the size of a large American city; the surprise visit to the radio station; the insulting entrance into Mr Villafana’s property; the prophetess and the intrusion of religion into what is supposed to be a secular state.

Above all, the “gimme gimme dependency syndrome” the PNM has encouraged amongst its supporters and the pandering to the lowest common denominator, ie, race. Race equals group prejudice equals group politics in T&T. This sense of group functions along two important levels. One level involves the obvious dimension of domination, of hierarchical ordering and positioning as typified by the political cry: “Trinidad is PNM country.” A second critical level, however, involves a dimension of exclusion and inclusion, of socio-emotional embrace and rejection. “We culture.” This exclusion and inclusion dimension, again, invokes an emotional basis to the sense of group. Listen to the radio talk shows and hear the various tribes talk about “those people!” Race prejudice is a protective device. It functions, however shortsightedly, to preserve the integrity and the position of the dominant group, even if there is corruption, incompetence and lack of integrity.

It is race that is behind the commess that is going on in T&T, the tacit understanding that it is all gobar but that it is our gobar so it is all right. The righteous concerns within the PNM apparently have given in. That must change. Politics in T&T is a politics waiting to be broken. Until we recognise this, until we move away from race as the defining feature of our politics, we will struggle. The island is too small. From my reading of the issues, it is the present PNM party, molded in the image of one man, that is holding most to race. They have failed us. It is the coalition of parties that offers the best hope of escape from the politics of race. They may fail again but there is no alternative. I will support the People’s Partnership coalition next Monday.

Candidates: Alicia Hospedales, PNM and Anna Maria Mora, UNC-CoP Coalition.
Tough call. Alicia Hospedales is the incumbent. Anna Maria Mora is a strong contender with serious social intervention credibility. Expect a strong sympathy pull for Hospedales, who was doused in paint by a political dissenter, but Mora is well-known, capable and intelligent. I give her the nod.
Winner: Anna Maria Mora.

Barataria/San Juan
Candidates: Joseph Ross, PNM and Fuad Khan, UNC-CoP Coalition.
Wow. Barataria and San Juan should love Joseph Ross, except that he’s so utterly bland and when he’s not, so reflexively unlikable that Fuad Khan has a real shot at taking this one home. Both men sport likeable public smiles and Joseph Ross has been the public eye a lot as Minister of Tourism, except that may not actually turn out to be an asset if anyone remembers what he’s been saying.
Winner: Joseph Ross.

D’Abadie/O’Meara
Candidates: Karen Nunez-Teshiera, PNM and Anil Roberts, UNC-CoP Coalition.
Here are two people everybody knows. Anil may not be your cup of tea, but Karen’s a strong drink even for the experienced political imbiber.
Winner: Anil Roberts

Diego Martin North/East
Candidates: Colm Imbert, PNM and Garvin Nicholas, UNC-CoP Coalition.
If there’s anyone who’s more universally disliked than the Prime Minister in this election, it’s Colm Imbert, who is widely regarded as his facilitator in matters of public works. Nobody’s denying the value of the overpass and the water taxis executed under Imbert’s transport portfolio, but oh, the man sooo irritating.
Garvin’s largely a political unknown, despite contesting an election or two in the past, but he has one unerring advantage in Diego Martin North/East and that’s not being Colm Imbert.
Winner: Garvin Nicholas

San Fernando East
Candidates: Patrick Manning, PNM and Carol Cuffy-Dowlat, UNC-CoP Coalition.
I’m feeling a big upset here. The sentiments regarding the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Patrick Manning, are sharply polarised and this is where it will play out.
Winner: Carol Cuffy-Dowlat

St Anns East
Candidates: Joanne Thomas, PNM and Verna St Rose Greaves, UNC-CoP Coalition.
This should be a safe bet. St Anns East has been PNM since it was established except for Lincoln Myers’ tenure in the 1986 NAR sweep. I don’t think that will happen this year. Verna’s smart, persuasive and you don’t want her to shake her water bottle at you. No you don’t.
Winner: Verna St Rose Greaves

Yeah..... the exact opposite is going to happen in these seats. Pure rumtalk. I could also add Tobago West to the list.
