U-15s beat Guyana, edge Jamaica for title

Trinidad and Tobago were crowned West Indies Cricket Board Regional Under-15 champions yesterday after they handed Guyana their first defeat of the tournament in the final round of matches at Inshan Ali Park, Preysal.

T&T were sent in to bat and made 177 for eight off their 50 overs, Man-of-the-Match Jeremy Solozano top-scoring with 79. In reply Guyana were restricted to 109 for nine with Justin Joseph taking four for 26 as the hosts won by 68 runs.

In another key match yesterday, dethroned champions Jamaica defeated the Leeward Islands by 75 runs at Gilbert Park, California to finish level on eight points with T&T and Guyana.

Jamaica batted first and were in serious trouble at 67 for six but Man-of-the-Match Keneil Anniford’s 35-ball 33 and Tristan Coleman’s 69-ball 28, helped the former champions to a respectable 178 all out. In reply, Anniford bowled his team to victory, picking up four for 29 in his nine overs as the Leewards were dismissed for 103 in 32.2 overs.

Regional U-15s praised for 'high quality'

The future of West Indies cricket was on show in Trinidad and Tobago during the past week, in the West Indies Cricket Board Regional Under-15 Championships, and judging by the performances of the six teams involved that future is a bright one.

Those were the general sentiments expressed by the guest speakers during the closing ceremony for the regional U-15 tournament, which was held at the VIP Lounge of the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port of Spain on Sunday night.

T&T, led by their ’MVP’ captain Vikash Mohan, clinched their first regional title in five years in the most competitive tournament in recent history.

The top three teams-hosts Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and former champions Jamaica-all finished level on eight points apiece and the winners had to be decided by net run-rate.
