Korea name preliminary squad

Huh to whittle down 30 names to 23 after Ecuador friendly
Last updated: 30th April 2010

..
Huh: Named preliminary squad
.South Korea coach Huh Jung-moo has selected a preliminary squad of 30 players for the World Cup finals in South Africa.

Huh has picked 13 players who ply their trade abroad, including Manchester United midfielder Park Ji-sung and Bolton Wanderers winger Lee Chung-yong.

2002 World Cup hero Ahn Jung-hwan is also included as he bids for a third consecutive appearance on the global stage, while Celtic's Ki Sung-yong is picked along with former Premier League players Lee Young-pyo and Lee Dong-guk.

There are no uncapped players in the preliminary squad which will be whittled down to 23 names after the friendly with Ecuador on 16th May.

Last opportunity
"The Ecuador game is the last opportunity for the domestic players," said Huh.

"We will also be checking the condition of the foreign-based stars."

There is no place for former Fulham and Reading star Seol Ki-hyeon who is still recovering from a knee operation.

"Seol hasn't been included because he hasn't played as he is still recovering and hasn't trained.

"Of course, it is regrettable for the players who haven't made the squad, but those 30 players have the opportunity to play a big part for the national team."

England name provisional WC squad
« Reply #10 on: May 11, 2010, 11:03:56 AM »
Jamie Carragher, Joe Cole and Adam Johnson have been included in Fabio Capello's provisional 30-man squad for this summer's World Cup in South Africa.

Liverpool stalwart Carragher, who announced his retirement from international football in 2007, returns to the fold to provide cover in defence with Gary Neville overlooked entirely.

Chelsea midfielder Cole has been plagued by injury for large parts of this season but his goal in the Premier League title decider against Manchester United helped convince Capello he is worth another look.

Young Manchester City midfielder Johnson is rewarded for his good form this season with a place on the list while his club-mate Gareth Barry is also included, despite currently being out injured.

Barry's inclusion means there is no place for Manchester United's Owen Hargreaves, who had been touted as a replacement for the City man despite having played just one minute of football in 18 months.

Shaun Wright-Phillips, Aaron Lennon and Theo Walcott will compete for a wide slot in Capello's final squad while Tom Huddlestone makes the initial cut in central midfield.

Michael Carrick's indifferent form this season has not deterred Capello from picking him and the Manchester United man completes the midfield line-up along with Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, James Milner and Scott Parker.

Tottenham central defensive pairing Michael Dawson and Ledley King both get the nod alongside Matthew Upson, with Leighton Baines, Stephen Warnock, Glen Johnson and Ashley Cole joining Rio Ferdinand and John Terry at the back.

Capello named five strikers with Sunderland's Darren Bent edging out Bobby Zamora of Fulham and West Ham's Carlton Cole.

Bent, who scored 25 goals this season, joins Tottenham pair Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe, Aston Villa's Emile Heskey and Wayne Rooney of Manchester United.

Just three goalkeepers were named - Joe Hart, David James and Rob Green.

Capello will trim his squad to a final 23 on June 1.

Full squad list:

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart, David James, Robert Green; Defenders: Leighton Baines, Jamie Carragher, Ashley Cole, Michael Dawson, Rio Ferdinand, Glen Johnson, Ledley King, John Terry, Matthew Upson, Stephen Warnock; Midfielders: Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, Tom Huddlestone, Adam Johnson, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon, James Milner, Scott Parker, Theo Walcott, Shaun Wright-Phillips; Forwards: Darren Bent, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney.

Interesting how you hardly ever see ah England player from another league...they whole squad is domisticated  :D

Italy is a close second, with only G Rossi (Villareal) from another league.

Big Up!

He from a whole nother country... although some consider New Jersey to be a separate planet.

Agree with the comments on Domenech... he must have some world class blackmail pics of somebody.  Henry is a reach... but Cisse???  Ah mean, he tear up the Greek league... but is de Greek league we talking about here.

Benzema don't deserve to be around that French side.. all he did was go to real, scrub bench, lose form and play shit all season... But that Domenech is still coach is one of the world's greatest mysteries.. My personal theory is that because of the strength of characters in the French squad there are very few people qualified to coach that team.. In other words, yuh just need ah more arrogant asshole than the rest of arrogant assholes on the french team...

Personally I would have like to see Laurent Blanc or Didier Deschamps take over because Domenech does not know what he is doing.

As for Holland.. Van Nistelrooy is not retired, he had a spat with the previous coach Van Basten but was struggling hard to come back in the fold with Van Marwijk (sp) after coming back from his knee injury with Hamburg. The coach said he respect the effort but he out of it too long to make it back in the side..

Seedorf and all say he was hoping for a bly...

You were saying?

Did you miss it the first time?  Let's try again... when was the last international that he played in?

Attempting a comeback isn't the same as being unretired.

Hope that helps.
