Apparently walcott failed to follow the game plan against mehico and japan-capello wanted him to take the play to the outside and cross but he kept taking the ball in and losing it. capello called him out in a meeting. I guess capello realized he is a one trick pony who lacks football sense.

Kinda harsh. Listening to BBC earlier the view presented was that Wenger failed him re: playing time and meshing that with injury and U-21 appearances ... under Capello he started to thrive but has had insufficient time to 'get back on track' ... his issue is decison-making (agreed) but one-trick pony? Less sure of that.

A lil bit of luck in his execution and he could have found success versus Mexico ... however he was tentative.

This is not an Arsenal v United thing. I say he is a one trick pony because all he looks to do is push ball and run by the defender. if a defender size him positionally he is easily nullified becasue he will push the ball and run out of room or the ball will run out of play.  He seem tuh feel that having speed was all he needed, the man has yet to try and find another way to be affective on the pitch. He also seems to lack a football brain- he keeps trying to do the same thing over and over again expecting the same results even when the defender adjust to his attempts. I don't even know if he knows how to play a 1-2. But watch somebody post a vid with him playing a 1-2. Compare him to a player like Lennon who has speed but can also dribble-even though he little erratic he is more effective that Walcott.

I agree with this, Walcott one move is a push past and run and then try a shot from an angle without looking up for options in the box. Thats the one thing i can say i like about Lennon. He was in Walcott boat too up to a couple years ago but of late he's added a different dimension to his game.. Now he cutting inside with his right and even slapping home with his left foot.

This makes him so much more a nightmare for defenders especially with that speed, because if you shepherd Walcott out to the wing he can't hurt you but with Lennon he could go either way.

That said, I think the Arsenal brand not helpin too, because Walcott right now is a true winger in a system that doesn't depend on wingers. Arshavin and Rosicky/Eboue (not wingers) often start there.

Giggsy, ah know what you were referring to ... in fact, I concur that he's reliant on speed as an attribute, but I don't think he's necessarily a one-dimensional player ... despite that being disproportionately on display. He's been introduced into games precisely to employ his speed tactically and to create unbalancing moments ... his issue is that he's often tempted to overelaborate when the prospect of combination play is obvious to onlookers. I think your observation plays into the constructive criticism mentioned beforehand.

Improved decision-making begets more playing time, but also playing time improves decision-making? Critics were merely alluding to the fact that his comprehensive development has been impeded. The period between now and 2014 will be critical for him ... actually, let me narrow that ... his goal/challenge should be to make the Euro 2012 squad.

Definitely not an Arsenal v Man United thing.

Ferdinand out of world cup.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/jun/04/rio-ferdinand-injury-world-cup
Rio Ferdinand has been ruled out of the World Cup after injuring his left knee in training.

The England captain broke down after a tackle in the final few minutes of his team's first training session since landing in South Africa, and was taken to hospital for a scan.

The scan revealed knee ligament damage and the 31-year-old will take no part in the World Cup.

"Rio has been ruled out for four to six weeks and will therefore unfortunately miss the World Cup," said the FA in a statement. "Tottenham Hotspur's Michael Dawson has been contacted today and will fly to South Africa on Friday evening."

Are pre-WC injuries on the rise ... or does the incidence of injury seem magnified just because it's the WC?

Since that injury comment above iz Ferdinand, Robben, Drogba and Mikel Obi injured ... to answer my question: this injury situation seems exceptional, especially given the players involved.

...and not just the pervasiveness of the injuries, but that they're happening to a lot of high profile players.  Add Ballack to that list you posted, along with:

Gareth Barry (although he's still making the trip)
Mourad Meghni (Algeria)
Carlos Bocanegra (not a big name, but big impact on the US chances... surgery for a sports hernia)
Humberto Suazo (Chile- hamstring)
Michael Essien, of course
Robert Enke (not exactly in the same vein, but his suicide was a huge loss for Germany)
Rene Adler (slated to be Enke's successor; out with a rib injury)
Salvador Cabanas (Paraguay- gunshot... again not exactly an 'injury' but...)
Fernando Torres (Spain- recuperating from knee surgery.  Supposedly healed.)
Cesc Fabregas (Spain- recuperating from a broken foot.  Also said to be healed.)

Can't recall any specifics off the top of my head but my impression is that every world cup has one (or maybe two) big name injuries- this one is on a different level.

I think that's a fair assessment.

Lula defends Brazil World Cup squad
(AP) – 2 hours ago.http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jkdThb5UX_hUzM0JRuN91G9np19gD9G78HNG0

BRASILIA, Brazil — Brazil President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva defended the World Cup squad picked by coach Dunga. However, he singled out one player who might have been included: Ronaldinho.
Silva said Tuesday in a radio interview that Ronaldinho "deserved another chance."

A free-kick specialist and slick dribbler, Ronaldinho was not called up for the 2007 Copa America roster after saying he was tired. His trajectory with the national team plummeted from that moment.

Silva said Ronaldinho is aware that if he was playing to his full potential with club team AC Milan, he would not have been left off the final 23-man Brazil squad.

"Looking at the Brazil squad, Dunga didn't leave anyone off," Silva said on Radio Jangadeira. "There's only one player who deserved another chance, Ronaldinho Gaucho.

"Someone at his level, the star that he is, knows that if he were playing as well as he can, nobody would leave him off the team. We know he went a time without playing, was a reserve with Barcelona and AC Milan and did not play in the Copa America."

Dunga has been criticized for selecting a team of "workers" rather than players with flair such as Ronaldinho. The presence of those creative types did not help Brazil in 2006, when it was knocked out in the quarterfinals by eventual finalist France.
