Officials: Delay in women’s league frustrating.
By: Shari John (T&T Guardian).

Azaad Mohammed-Khan, chief executive officer of San Juan Jabloteh Football club, has expressed his frustration at the delay of the beginning of the Women’s League Football (Wolf).

The new name and image of the league was launched last year, with the hopes of developing the women’s game further while creating a “legacy” for the sport in T&T as a mandate of being host to the second Fifa Under-17 Women’s World Cup in T&T.

The 16-team World Cup will be held from September 5 to 25. “The girls have been training since January and it is very frustrating not knowing what is going on,” explained Mohammed-Khan.

According to coaches in the league, they are yet to receive any word as to when the league will start and what is the reason for its delay. “We just keep hearing promises of meetings to be held and it is disturbing and just means that all the efforts put into it has gone to waste,” said Clive Auguste, manager of the Petrotrin women’s team.

Clubs which participate in the league include Tobago FC, San Juan Jabloteh, Real Dimension, Petrotrin, U-17 Women and Joe Public.

Explaining that he feels a bit jaded, Auguste lamented his frustration at the fact that the women’s arm of the T&T Football Federation has not even had the common courtesy to call the coaches to a meeting to let them know what is going on.

The coaches, said they may be forced to look outside the umbrella of the T&TFF in order to get their girls playing some football, or organise a league themselves.

“A lot of the clubs are in agreement that if the league is not calling a meeting, they will have to go ahead and organise a league on their own,” shared Mohammed-Khan. He emphasised the fact however, that they would prefer not to play outside of Wolf.

“We don’t want to play outside the local federation but if they are not calling a meeting, they are putting us in a situation where we will have to put something in place.” The coaches also expressed their dismay with a local league not being organised with T&T hosting a Women’s World Cup this year.

“We are having a women’s World Cup and no women’s league, it looks good at the top, but no local league. That has to be obscene. How can you justify holding a women’s world cup, with no league running,” said Mohammed-Khan.

Also expressing his disappointment, was Corbin Cooper, coach of Tobago FC, which copped all the major titles last year including the League, Knockout and Big Four competitions.

“Since the league last year, they have not kept a meeting to tell us what is going on,” said Cooper. “As a champion team, we are looking forward to playing in the league and this is affecting us greatly, especially in Tobago where are there are no other local leagues running for the girls to play in.

”Contacted yesterday, Sharon O’Brien, President of the Women’s Federation, assured that the league would in fact be run at the end of June, and there are plans to call a meeting with the coaches next week. She also said she has not received any calls from the coaches on the issue.
The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Women’s football league set for July
T&T Guardian

Clubs will learn the status of the league as the T&T Football Federation (TTFF) has mandated a special committee, headed by national senior coach, Jamaal Shabazz, to organise a Women’s League Football (Wolf) Classic. Coaches of the various clubs, last Friday expressed their frustration at the federation’s delay in calling a meeting to organise a league, especially in light of the second Fifa Under-17 Women’s World Cup being held in T&T this year. The 16-team World Cup tournament will be held from September 5-25.

According to Shabazz and Jabloteh Chief Executive Officer, Azaad Mohammed-Khan, there will be a competition which will run for two months beginning in July to compensate for the league.
“The clubs and the girls will be very happy that they have a competition to play in,” explained Mohammed-Khan, who was very vocal on the issue.

Shabazz expressed his pleasure at the initiative, explaining, “The fact that I have been asked by the TTFF to assist in putting together a tournament for the clubs means that we are going to move forward.” The two-month long competition will be open to all local women clubs and a meeting among coaches, is scheduled for next Saturday, during which the league fixtures are expected to be decided.

This is real :bs: for so long women football playing in T&T and they can't get the league going. How the hell a 2 month league can assist the growth of female players? This is stupid. Having the same people doing the same thing over and over again. Is jamal not in charge of Cali Pro team? Where he finding time to effectively impliment this league. You telling me all these female players who back home from scholarship and have degrees in Sport Management, Acounting, Marketing, Business Communication, etc they cannot get these young ladies to run an effective league? Come on we need to do better than that. How are we to compete and beat the US and Mexico when our players don't even know when they will get to play. How can they train?

:bs: at it's best.

Well said Elan ,Shabazz really has no shame , saying that ' it's a pleasure to be given the opportunity to organize a Competition for the women . ' He was part of the organizing commitee last year together with Keith Look loy and about four women .When all the coaches and managers were lambasting the women's executive for the poor state of women's football, they were quick to say ' That was in the past ' Now a year later they are more disorganized than ever.So now after wasting May and June , they plan to have a 'COMPETITION ' in July and August . In July , the national senior team will be at the CAC Games. They will probably be in camp in the weeks leading up to that. That eliminates about 25 or 30 of our best players .In August , the Under 15s will be heading off to Singapore to the Olympics .They will probably be banned from representing their clubs as well .And then there is the under 17 world cup team whose players will not be playing . So almost all the teams that played last year will be fielding second or third string teams, that is if they do decide to play in this ' mickey mouse ' league .Why wasn't the elected /selected committee mandated to run the league ? I have heard that almost the entire committee is involved in the U17 world cup .If this is true , shouldn't a new committee have been elected? Oh! I forgot ...this is Trinidad and Tobago football . :-\ :-\

Successful Tobago women football team needs funding

Successful Tobago women football team needs funding
Tobago News

Competition is scheduled to commence in Trinidad on Saturday. However, up to press time, head coach Corbin Cooper noted that he was still waiting on information on whether the League will have an official opening including march past and other formalities or if they will go straight into games.

The Tobago Women football team which made a clean sweep of the three tournaments, the League Championship, FA knockout and Big Four in the League last year is still waiting on their prize monies.

Corbin stated that they are depending on the prize monies, assistance from the Sports Division and other corporate sponsors to cover their budget to participate in the League.

Cooper told the Tobago News that last year the team was under the management of the Tobago Football Association and they funded the team, but he stressed that since the new administration with Raymond Alleyne as president has been elected they have received no communication from them and he believes that since the team was borne out of their initiative under the last administration they should have contacted him and not the reverse.

He said however, that he had heard rumours that the TFA had spent too much money on the team last year and they might not be interested in funding the team this year. He added that they seem only interested in the prize monies that they won.

Corbin stressed that if they do not fund the team this year, he will change the team's name from the Tobago Women Football team to the Tobago Women Football Club and try to restructure it to make it more self-sufficient.

However, the newly elected TFA president, Raymond 'Finey' Alleyne stressed to the Tobago News when asked to respond to Corbin's claims, that the TFA is very interested in developing women's football but noted that they have received no correspondence from the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation and it was only after the former General Secretary, Arlon James and the present General Secretary Hayden Duke spoke to Cooper that they had some idea about what was going on. He noted that they cannot and will not sanction anything that they know nothing about and added that at present they are financially strapped and unable to assist. Despite their situation, he said that they will contact the Federation for more information on the League.

Women’s league kicks off Sunday

Women’s league kicks off Sunday
By Shari John (T&T Guardian)

Real Dimension will meet Petrotrin Women on Sunday as the Women’s League Football (Wolf) Competition kicks off at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya from 3 pm. Following the opening encounter, Defence Force will do battle with CAL San Juan Jabloteh from 5 pm at the same venue. Matches will be played in two divisions (First and Premier) every Sunday at various venues.

Wolf, which was launched last year as part of the legacy programme for the Fifa Under-17 Women’s World Cup, looked to be in turmoil when club coaches were left in the dark as to whether or not there would be a league this year. On hearing the news of the league however, technical director of women’s football in T&T and Under-17 women’s coach Even Pellerud expressed his pleasure that the league was going to run.

The Norwegian explained that if women’s football in T&T is to go anywhere, there needed to be a functioning league in place. “You cannot develop a consistent programme unless you have a high quality league in your country,” he said. Pellerud also said that he hoped the league could be improved upon within the next couple of years, particularly with the introduction of a longer season spanning eight to nine months.

Women’s football champs in $$ plea.
T&T Newsday Reports.

The 2010 National Women’s League Football (WoLF) season was due to kick-off at the weekend, but Corbin Cooper, coach of champs Tobago Women Football team, recently noted that he was still waiting on information on whether the league will have an official opening including march past and other formalities or if they will go straight into games.

The Tobago Women Football team, which made a clean sweep of the three tournaments— the League Championship, FA knockout and Big Four — in the inaugural season last year, is still waiting on their prize monies.

Corbin stated that they are depending on the prize monies, assistance from the Sports Division of the Tobago House of Assembly, and other corporate sponsors to cover their budget to participate in the League.

Cooper said that, last year, the team was under the management of the Tobago Football Association (TFA) and they funded the team. But he stressed that, since the new administration was elected, with Raymond Alleyne as president, the 2009 WoLF champs have received no communication from the TFA and he believes that, since the team was borne out of the initiative under the last administration, they should have contacted him and not the reverse.

However, he said that he had heard rumours that the TFA had spent too much money on the team last year and they might not be interested in funding the team this year. He added that they (TFA) seem only interested in the prize monies that they won.

Corbin stressed that, if they do not fund the team this year, he will change the team’s name from the Tobago Women Football team to the Tobago Women Football Club and try to restructure it to make it more self-sufficient.

Alleyne, in an interview on the Tobago News, insisted that the TFA is very interested in developing women’s football but noted that they have received no correspondence from the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) and it was only after the former General Secretary, Arlon James and the present General Secretary Hayden Duke spoke to Cooper that they had some idea about what was going on.

Alleyne noted that his executive cannot and will not sanction anything that they know nothing about and added that at present they are financially strapped and unable to assist. Despite their situation, he said that they will contact the TTFF for more information on the Women’s League.

St Louis’ double sinks Petrotrin.
By: Shari John (T&T Guardian).

National striker Natasha St Louis netted twice for Real Dimension which scored a comfortable 3–0 victory over Petrotrin United in the Women’s Football League (WoLF), which kicked off on Sunday at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya.

Dimension and San Juan Jabloteh both kicked off the 2010 season in fine style after both teams secured comfortable victories in their respective matches on Sunday.

Karissa Rooney broke the game open with a 48th minute goal after she sent a pass soaring into the right side of the net, securing the first goal for Dimension. St Louis emerged the star of the evening after she scored two goals in the 74th and 77th minute respectively.

Commenting on his team’s victory Coach Ken Hoyte said the victory was expected, as his players exercised “more patience on the field.” “It was an exceptional game; the standard was extremely high for an opening game in the season. Like us, Petrotrin has a number of national players on their side, but I think the real deciding factor was our ability to remain calm on the field,” said Hoyte.

“We went into the half goalless but coming into the second half we knew we had to make it work and we did. I would like to congratulate the girls on a match well played.” Dimension will face defending champion Tobago Women’s FC on July 4 at the Plymouth Recreational Ground, Tobago.

When asked about his preparations for upcoming challenge against the champions, Hoyte stated “it’s like preparing for any other team.” “Real Dimension is a well balanced machine.

I know Tobago has its key national players but that does not make a difference. Dimension also has six girls who train with the national team. Like any other game we must concentrate on our game and improving our technique. I am sure our results will be no different from yesterday’s match.”

CAL San Juan Jabloteh secured a victory for themselves as well on Sunday, as they managed to edge Defence Force with a 62nd minute lone strike from national player, Jinelle Kissoon.

Sharon O’Brien, WoLF’s President described yesterday’s launch as a success; “We are mindful of the challenges the league faces, but despite all obstacles all stakeholders have come together to promote the beautiful game. I am confident that this season will be even better than the 2009 season.”
The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.
