If it gets backed up, then it all blows away. Its early season, so nuff opportunity to confirm.

In any case, still a very fast run even if you chop off one tenth of a second.

The chatter is one thing, but if the IAAF refuses to put the time on their website, then unfortunately it doesn't count.

They put on their website today!

I see. So it is now officially recognized, now time for her the silence the critics.

More doubters than critics. We al know she is talented, thoough I dont like her form, while Ato think she has the best DF of all the females. He is the expert there, so...but I still thinks she looks ragged.

I like the end of her race ...I remember years ago when she burst on the scene ...may even be responsible for the premature end of fana Ashby ...what pass dey ???  ha ha ha ...Maybe Michelle might get there but for now Kelly ann is our brightest hope in the sprints.

Someone said it I think on another thread. There is a raggedness to her form since college that I think is not good and hampering her.

This 200 today did not help me in determining if this 10.84 is legit, but I can say this - 100m 10.01 PR for Bledman says that FL race might JUST be legit!

Sorry, but Sorrillo and Bledman are the 2 biggest stories for me for the day - this is our sprint future blossoming before our very eyes! Imagine that - new ones on the horizon for TNT - while the established stars are still under 25 (Richard et al)

Remember Bledman ran 9.93 in the same 10.84 KAB meet with a 2.8wind? !

So one person has backed up that Claremont race in my eyes...BLEDMAN

BTW Ashmeade was on his way to 9.9 something and pulled up he was pulling away and injured himself!!!!!

Realistically on the men side of things Torpedo, Bledman, Sorillo, Burns, Callendar, Armstrong ... "Brown - To be honest I think he may be done"
Finally we have a legit contender in the 200m in Sorillo and I still think Torpedo need to run more of these seriously I'm not convinced that he can stop these men when they're coming home  ... he needs to get stronger
Quow in the 400 and I think he may need to get stronger as well... he's around but he hasnt moved himself to the next level seems stuck somehow.
Baptiste and Semoy in the women side of things but baptiste needs to get a smoother more relaxed still else VC and these girls are gonna keep beating her .... she is so stiff jeez

The men are looking strong and i really happy that Sorillo pulled out the win in unfavorable conditions. To be honest the men always prove themselves to be strong contenders its just the women bar Josanne lol. KAB should have made the final in the 100m last year had she been in the right semi heat. Watching the race her start was explosive and I was hoping that she could at least get 3rd behind both top girls... then she just faded. She has that rocking motion still! She has had that since her injury in 2007 and i don't know... I still think the time was legit though but it remains to be seen if she can support herself with a solid 100m run. I believe in her!

T&T’s Baptiste gets top world ranking

Kelly Ann Baptiste is listed as the top woman sprinter in the world in the 100m in the latest International Association of Athletic Fedearation (IAAF) world rankings. Baptiste sped to the top spot with her 10.84 seconds clocking which she achieved in winning the 100m dash at Clearmont, Florida on June 5. The 23-year-old is now the first local female to top the world ranking in any event. In a release from the IAAF yesterday, Baptiste took the number one spot from American Carmelita Jeter who was ahead with a 10.94 clocking at the Jamaica Invitational on May 1. Jeter is now third behind Shalonda Solomon who ran 10.90 seconds to finish second behind Baptiste. Semoy Hackett is at 33rd with 11.27 seconds set in the semifinals of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division Two Championships on May 27 in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA. Semoy Hackett went to win finals (11.33) for the second straight year.

In the 200m listing, Hackett is at number 12 with 22.75 seconds. The former Bishop High School Tobago sprinter achieved the time in competing the sprint double at the NCAA Division two championships. The time is a new championship record and personal best for her. Baptiste in at number 14 with 22.82 which she ran at the Diamond League Adidas Grand Prix in New York, US on June 12th. Baptiste was 4th in that race behind 2002/2004 Olympic 200m champion Veronica Campbell Browne (Jamaica) who won in a world leading 21.98 seconds. Among the men Keston Bledman sprinted his way to number 6 on the 100m chart following his impressive 10.01 seconds second place finish in the “B” race in New York on Saturday.

The time is a new personal best for the Olympic and World 4 x 100m relay silver medallist. At number 13th is Richard Thompson who won the “A” 100m race in New York. Thompson’s best time for 2010 is 10.08 seconds which was set in winning his heat at the Diamond League Olso Bislett Games on June 4. Thompson went on to finish second in the finals in a wind assisted 9.90 seconds behind Jamaica Asafa Powell. In New York, Thompson, the 2008 double Olympic silver medallist, was the winner in 9.89 seconds, which was again wind assisted.

Marc Burns in at 22nd on the world list with 10.11 seconds which he set in finishing third behind Bledman. Several other TT athletes feature in the 100m. At 30th is Aaron Armstrong (10.17), 35th—Rondell Sorillo (10.19), 40th—Emmanuel Callander (10.21) and 86th- Marcus Duncan (10.29). Sorillo is also at eighth in the 200m with 20.29 seconds. Sorillo, a final year student at Kentucky University, won the NCAA Division one 200m title on Saturday in 20.36(wind assisted) to become the second TT athlete to win the title behind Ato Boldon in 1995.

In the men’s 400m hurdles, Jehue Gordon is at seventh with 48.47 seconds set in Puerto Rico on May 8th. 18 year old Gordon competed in New York on Saturday and was eighth in the one lap hurdles race in 49.96 seconds. Emmanuel Mayers is at 33rd on 49.65 seconds. World Championships bronze medallist is at eighth in the women’s event clocking 54.89 in Rome Italy on June 10th where she was fourth. Newly crowned NCAA 100m hurdles bronze medallist, Aleesha Barber is at 19th in the shorter hurdles race with her national record run of 12.85 seconds. Barber, who attends Penn State set the mark on May 29th. Many of these athletes are expected to compete at the NAAA/Sagicor National Junior and Senior Track and Field Championships set for June 25-27 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.

I heard he far from calling it quits. With him is a conditioning thing and a whole set of minor injuries. Nothing too serious from what I heard. Despite all the injuries he does always come back and run a 10.0s. So i think we  seeing him this year.

Focus on Athletes - Kelly-Ann Baptiste
(Updated 01 September 2010)

Kelly-Ann BAPTISTE, Trinidad and Tobago (100/200/4x100m)

Born: 14 October 1986, Scarborough, Tobago
Lives: Florida, USA
Height/Weight: 1.67m/58kg
Coach: Lance Brauman
Manager: Cubie Seegobin

What started off as an effort to be good at something – anything – has turned into a passionate pursuit of excellence. Sprinter Kelly-Ann Baptiste wants to be remembered as an all-time great.

“I played netball. It just wasn’t for me. I couldn’t handle jumping around on a court for an hour plus. And then tennis, I always had problems with my swings and the coach always cursed me out, so I quit that.”

Encouraged by a friend to try track and field, Baptiste joined Zenith athletics club. It was the start of a journey that has already taken her to two World Championships in Athletics and the last two editions of the Olympic Games. But Baptiste is not satisfied with mere participation.

“I’ve always told my friends, everybody around me, that I don’t want to run track and field just to get by and pay the bills. I want to be in track and field to be great, I want to be known as one of the greatest athletes to ever run the female hundred. I don’t want to be average. That’s the main thing that drives me on a daily basis. It’s okay to run 11.0-something, but why can’t I run 10.8. It’s that desire to be great that keeps me going.”

Baptiste took a giant stride towards greatness on 5 June this year when she got to the line in 10.84 seconds in the women’s 100 metres, at the National Training Centre (NTC) Stars Invitational meet, in Clermont, Florida. The winning time, a new Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) record, puts Baptiste in 25th spot on the All-time women’s 100 metres performance list. It was also the fastest time in the world this year for close to one month.

Baptiste produced two more legal sub-11 clockings, 10.98 on 26 June and 10.93 on10 July, proving that her 10.84 bolt was no fluke.

In June last year, Baptiste made a major breakthrough at the T&T Championships. In the women’s 100 metres final, she stopped the clock at 10.94 seconds to retain her title and become the country’s first-ever sub-11 woman.

“It was important for my confidence. It was important as a motivating factor. And I think, most of all, it was important for the sport and female athletics in T&T. It was just a huge, huge deal for me.”

T&T has a strong tradition in sprinting. Hasely Crawford grabbed 100 metres gold at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, and Ato Boldon captured the 200 metres world title in 1997. Boldon is also a quadruple Olympic medallist, while Darrel Brown earned World Championship 100 metres silver in 2003 and Richard Thompson seized silver in the 2008 Olympic Games 100 metres before anchoring T&T to the runner-up spot in the sprint relay final.

But for all the country’s success on the track, only one T&T woman has climbed the rostrum at a senior global meet, Josanne Lucas making history with 400m hurdles bronze at the 2009 World Championships, in Berlin, Germany. Baptiste wants to change that statistic.

“I’m kind of tired of us going through life and just being average, because we’re more than average. We’ve had so many talented female athletes pass through the track and field system in our country, and if I could tell you where any of them are today ... I can’t. It’s just sad. I feel we deserve more respect than we get, and it’s not anybody else’s fault but ours. We just need to rise to a certain level and accept the responsibility that comes with being a great athlete, whether it is training hard or just doing the things that you know you’re supposed to be doing to get to a certain level.”

Baptiste is no stranger to global success. In 2003, at the World Youth (under-18) Championships, in Sherbrooke, Canada, she bagged bronze in the 100 metres final in 11.58 seconds.

In 2004, at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Junior (under-20) Championships, in Mexico, Baptiste earned gold in the 200 metres and silver in the 100.

And less than three weeks later, the T&T sprinter appeared in another global final. At the World Junior Championships, in Grosseto, Italy, she finished fourth in the half-lap event, missing out on bronze by one-thousandth of a second.

Baptiste made her Olympic debut at the Athens Games, but it was not a memorable experience. Just 17 at the time, Baptiste held her own running the lead-off leg in the 4x100 metres relay. However, she was unable to complete the baton exchange with Fana Ashby, and T&T exited the event.

In 2005, Baptiste represented the country at the Carifta Games, in Tobago, the island of her birth. First, she crushed her rivals in the under-20 100 metres final ... among the vanquished was Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser, the sprinter who would go on to become Olympic champion at the 2008 Beijing Games and 2009 World champion. Baptiste then completed the sprint double with victory in the 200 metres. In the championship race, she got the better of another Jamaican, Anneisha McLaughlin, by three-hundredths of a second.

Baptiste says double gold at Carifta 2005 is her biggest achievement to date.

“It was at home, and everything was just perfect. I didn’t think I was going to win the 200 ... I won that. That came off of me going to LSU (Louisiana State University) in January, and making such big improvements, coming back and PRing. That was just amazing for me.”

The best young athletes in the Caribbean battle for supremacy annually, at the Carifta Games. The standard of sprinting is very high at the regional junior meet.

“Seeing the Jamaicans run at Carifta, then moving on to Pan American Juniors and World Juniors and seeing how they did, I realised that if I compete at Carifta, if I could beat them or be with them, I could make something of myself.”

In 2008, Baptiste emerged as the fastest woman on the American collegiate circuit, copping top spot in the NCAA Championship 100 metres final. Earlier in the year, she had claimed the NCAA Indoor Championship 60 metres title.

Baptiste seemed set to make her mark at the Beijing Olympics. But it was not to be. In the 100 metres dash, she finished sixth in her quarter-final heat in 11.42 seconds. She had been eliminated in identical fashion at the 2005 World Championships in Athletics, in Helsinki, Finland.

“It was so ironic that the same time I ran in Helsinki in ’05 and got kicked out of the quarter-finals, the same time I ran in Beijing and got kicked out, so that got me even more upset.

“It (the Olympics) was a disappointment, but at the same time I kind of put things into perspective. I got there late, and I think that took a mental toll on me. Mentally, I told myself I was tired because of the long collegiate season, and then coming there and losing my bags and just the whole bunch of stuff just made me psychologically take myself out of it. Even though consciously I didn’t realise it, that’s what was happening.”

There was more disappointment for Baptiste in the 4 x 100 metres relay. A baton bungle on the final handover curtailed T&T’s bid for a championship race berth.
“I just had to regroup and realise the world doesn’t end there.”

At the 2009 World Championships, in Berlin, Germany, Baptiste bowed out in the semi-final round of the 100 metres, the T&T sprinter finishing fifth in heat one in 11.07 seconds. Baptiste also exited in the semis in the 200 metres. She was fourth in heat three in 22.96. And in the 4x100 metres relay, the T&T combination of Reyare Thomas, Baptiste, Ayanna Hutchinson and Semoy Hackett finished seventh in the final in 43.43 seconds.

Baptiste grew up in Plymouth, Tobago. She describes the village as quiet and close-knit.

“Everybody’s really close, everybody knows that I run track, everybody supports me.”

But like every community, Plymouth has its negatives as well.

“Another thing that motivated me to really do well was to get out of the status quo of what my village was. There used to be a lot of young girls – some of them don’t graduate from high school and they just get out of school and get pregnant and there’s nothing going on for them. That kind of motivated me a lot to do as well as I wanted to in track. And also, my mother kept on telling me about what the lifestyle was there and she didn’t want me to eventually grow up being that way.”

Baptiste has worked hard at her craft, and is reaping the rewards. She is now a professional athlete and contracted to adidas until 2012. On the pro circuit, she gets the opportunity to travel extensively. But the Plymouth sprinter does not do much sight-seeing.

“I haven’t had as much fun as I should when I come to these meets ... I guess (it’s) because I’m kind of reserved. I’m not the kind of person to go out on the streets and walk by myself to see a place. I don’t really do that stuff, but I actually think that it’s beneficial. You have to find a balance. Sometimes you have to realise that you’re not in the sport just to make money. It’s about having fun at the same time because that’s the only reason you started it in the first place. When you have fun, you’re more relaxed, and the better chance you have of running a better time or a better race.”

So, what are her interests outside of athletics?

“I’m a really boring person,” says a laughing Baptiste. “My interests? I’m not even going to lie to you, I don’t really do much. Music, I love music. That’s my thing. And play games, like my video games.”

If you spot Baptiste wearing headphones, ahead of a race, she’s likely to be listening to gospel music. Her spiritual focus keeps her motivated.

“I have a dream of being greater than I even expect myself to be. I know it’s going to take a lot. It’s not going to happen overnight. It’s going to take a lot of hard work, dedication and belief in myself. I don’t think God put us here to just be average people. I think he put us here to fulfil the potential that we have. If I were to die and not bring that forth, I would be very disappointed.”

Baptiste has attained a high level this season, and should be among the top finishers in the women’s 100 metres, at the IAAF/VTB Bank Continental Cup, in Split, Croatia.

Yes wills that 10.76 was a shocker to me- I know she was fully capable but I didn't think she was that Sharp yet. Plus!!!!!!! She didn't get a great start! So hmmm scary stuff. I dare say given some hard training over the next few months, the perfect start, perfect conditions and the form she held in that last 50 I'm sure she can do 10.5's-58/59.

Jeets better be ready! She has it in her to go there she just needs to execute esp with her start. I think its a matter of her being relaxed prior to her race. She looked nervous as hell in Berlin at the start whereas the lovely Mrs SAFP was all smiles. Of course everyone nervous but NOW she knows she is capable of 10.6 at least so it's time to step up.

Kelly just needs to get the start together I'm sure she is fully capable of 10.7's when she is ready. I've seen the improvements in technique from the bouncing thing last couple years to just pure beauty at the Kingston invitational. It appeared to me she was kinda gaining on jeets- a better start and avoiding the lane deviation it would have ensured an early season 10.89/90. After the w200m race DFM (i think)  mentioned they hadn't started speed training yet... So great stuff ahead.

I've got question marks on KS and SS-not so much KS but more SS BUT I KNOW that they know when to peak. So I'm looking forward to seeing what they produce.

MISSION MOSCOW
Baptiste looks a genuine double threat for Worlds
By Kwame Laurence kwame.laurence@trinidadexpress.com
Story Created: Jun 25, 2013 at 10:41 PM ECT

Kelly-Ann Baptiste established herself as a genuine World Championship medal contender in both sprints with two sizzling runs at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, on the weekend.

On Saturday, Baptiste established a new Trinidad and Tobago record—10.83 seconds—in winning her seventh women’s 100 metres national title. The clocking was the fastest time in the world this year.

And on Sunday, the final day of the NAAA Sagicor General/NGC National Open Track and Field Championships, Baptiste captured the 200m title in 22.36 seconds—also a new T&T standard. She is joint-fifth on the 2013 women’s 200m world performance list.

But while Baptiste is certain to bid for precious metal in the 100m dash at the August 10-18 IAAF World Championships, in Moscow, Russia, the 26-year-old track star told the Express she has not yet made a decision on her participation in the longer sprint.

“I really don’t know. I actually told my coach if I don’t run a certain time by the World Championships, I’m not going to double. It (the time) was within this ball park, so that’s a good sign.

“I’ll see how I do on the Diamond League circuit against other competitors, and depending on those performances, I will make a judgment then.”

But even if Baptiste decides to chase one individual title in Moscow, her half-lap outings this season will not be in vain.

“I need to work on my speed maintenance towards the end of my 100, and also in the 200. Running the 200 is going to help me gather that in the 100 metres.”

Baptiste said that since she was nursing a quadriceps injury, recently, Saturday’s 10.83 run was particularly gratifying.

“After May I picked up a slight cramp on my quad, so I was out for a while, so it was just about coming out here and getting back some confidence in my execution of my race and just being excited to compete again. The time just came along with my excitement to be able to compete. I wasn’t expecting a 10.83, but it happened and I’m grateful for that.”

The closest challenger for Baptiste in Saturday’s century final was Michelle-Lee Ahye, the 21-year-old sprinter seizing silver in a personal best 11.06 seconds. The competition will be stiffer when Baptiste competes at the July 6 Meeting Areva IAAF Diamond League meet, in Paris, France.

The 2011 World Championship 100m bronze medallist is hoping her times in Europe, in the build-up to the 2013 Worlds, will be similar to what she produced at the Crawford Stadium on the weekend.

“I have to go out there and try to replicate my performance, and replicating it means executing it the same way that I did—whether it’s against Michelle and this type of competition, or whether it’s against Carmelita Jeter and Shelly-Ann Fraser, I have to be able to duplicate the same technical things that I did in this race. It gives me a gauge as to what I need to do when I go on the circuit.”
