Basketball teams ready for Centro.
By WALTER ALIBEY (T&T Newsday).

May - 30 - 2010 - Trinidad and Tobago’s Women basketball team has earned an automatic qualification for the Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC) carded to be held in August.

General Secretary of the National Basketball Federation of Trinidad and Tobago (NBFTT) Kelvin Roberts said the local women earned a qualifying berth by virtue of being one of only eight teams in the Centro Basket Tournament to be held the first week of July in Puerto Rico.

Only eight teams will contest for CAC Games honours.

However there has been some surprising omissions on the TT women’s team named for the upcoming Centro Basket play-offs.

Newsday was reliably informed that some of the top female players has been left out of a shortlist of 24 players.

The players not making the grade include the professional standout Pietra Gay, Chezelle Griffith and Rachel Thompson-King, all of whom represent Courts Horizon in the domestic basketball league.

The shortlist of players, it is said, is being circulated via e-mail by a top official who was recently appointed to an executive position in the basketball federation.

It was also stated that the bulk of the players on the women’s shortlist are currently plying their trade in the United States. They include Fanta Patterson, Sue Lin Tang, Afeisha Noel, Sharmion Selman and Rhea Cordio.

Roberts said the shortlist of players will be revealed this week, soon after a coach for the team has been chosen.

The basketball federation, headed by Brian Manning, son of former Prime Minister Patrick Manning, held a recent meeting to decide on a date to select a coach for the women’s team, as well as the men’s team.

The federation has taken out newspaper advertisements inviting applications for national team coaches.

“As soon as the coaches are chosen the players, both men and women will be selected,” he said.

Roberts told Newsday that the TT men will be required to finish among the top eight teams if they are to qualify for the CAC Games.
The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Belize name former NBA star as Head Coach

BELIZE - Marques Johnson was announced as the new head coach for the Belizean national team that will compete in the 2010 Centrobasket Championship for Men. This tournament will be played in the Dominican Republic from July 5-11.

Johnson was a NBA star that averaged 20.1 points for his career with Milwaukee, Los Angeles Clippers and Golden State Warriors. He played college in UCLA along with David Greenwood who was the coach that guided this team in the 1998 Caricom Championship where they won Gold.

In the 2010 Centrobasket Championship Belize will have players like Milt Palacio, Alex Carcamo, Keenan Jourdon, among other who helped them win Silver in the 2009 COCABA Championship.

The 2010 Centrobasket Championship qualifies the top four teams for the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship (Pre-Olympic), the top eight for the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico and the top three for the 2011 Pan-American Games scheduled for Guadalajara, Mexico.

Puerto Rico looking at Centro

GUAYNABO - The Puerto Rican national team has a busy schedule ahead and with that in mind the stars are showing up early for practice. The last ones to show up were Nathan Peavy, Angel Daniel Vasallo and David Huertas.

The trio of forwards joins NBA guards Carlos Arroyo and Jose Juan Barea, who will be key in the events this summer, especially the Centrobasket Championship and FIBA World Championship.

Other players practicing are Filiberto Rivera, Ricky Sanchez, Miguel Ali Berdiel, Manuel Narvaez and Luis Villafañe who had a good season in BSN. Joel Jones Camacho will join this week and center Peter John Ramos asked for a couple of weeks off after a hard season in China and Puerto Rico.

Another NBA player, Renaldo Balkman, will join the team later this month and will add strength in the paint.

Larry Ayuso, Daniel Santiago, Guillermo Diaz, David Cortes, Angelo Reyes, Christian Dalmau, Carmelo Lee and Javier Mojica are currently playing in the BSN finals and might not be available until early July.

The first tournament will be the 2010 Centrobasket Championship to be played from July 5-11 and most of the players in the BSN finals might not make it. Then is the Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico from July 24-31 and then the FIBA World Championship from August 28 until September 12 in Turkey.

Despite the conflict with the BSN finals and the Centrobasket Tournament, all the players will have almost two months to prepare for the FIBA World Championship where the Puerto Rican team comes with a Silver medal from the 2009 FIBA-Americas Championship and with a deep talent pool in all positions for the first time in many years.
