All eyes on Baptiste
Countdown to NAAA/Sagicor Championships
Kwame Laurence kwame.
Wednesday, June 23rd 2010

Kelly-Ann Baptiste will be the focus of much attention at the NAAA/Sagicor Track and Field Championships, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, in Port of Spain, on the weekend.

The Plymouth, Tobago sprinter clocked an impressive 10.84 seconds, in Florida on June 5, to jump to the top of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) 2010 women’s 100 metres performance list. One week later, she was back in action at the adidas Grand Prix IAAF Diamond League meet, in New York, where she finished fourth in the 200m in 22.82.

Baptiste told the Express she was disappointed with her performance in the New York meet.

"From the way I’ve been training, I know things could be way much better, so I guess I just have to go back to the drawing board and see what could be done to make it a better performance.

"Didn’t really have a time in mine," she continued, "but I know in terms of my fitness and the way training has been going I should have been able to run at least 22.5/22.4."

Baptiste said that while her 10.84 seconds national record bolt one week earlier might have been a factor in her slower-than-expected half-lap run at the adidas Grand Prix, it’s not a plausible excuse.

"When you come to compete it doesn’t matter what you have run the week before. It’s just about stepping up and competing, and I guess that wasn’t done..."

The 23-year-old sprinter said she is targetting consistently fast times.

Thompson, Baptiste repeat
NAAA/Sagicor Track and Field Championships
Kwame Laurence kwame.
Sunday, June 27th 2010

Richard "Torpedo" Thompson repeated as NAAA/Sagicor Track and Field Championship men’s 100 metres gold medallist when he held off a fast-finishing Keston Bledman, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, in Port of Spain, late yesterday.

Like Hasely Crawford, at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, Thompson was drawn in lane one. And like Crawford, Thompson got home first, the Louisiana-based sprinter stopping the clock at 10.01 seconds.

Bledman closed in on Thompson late in the race, but ran out of track and had to settle for silver in 10.03. Emmanuel Callender (10.14) finished third, and Marc Burns (10.25) fourth.

Aaron Armstrong was disqualified for a false start.

In the qualifying round, Bledman clocked 10.18 seconds to lead all qualifiers into the final. Bledman topped heat three, beating Armstrong (10.27) into second spot. In heat one, Callender (10.45) was first and Burns (10.64) second. And in heat two, Marcus Duncan was first home in a personal best 10.26, while second spot was copped by Thompson (10.27). Kelly-Ann in 10.98

she is in the best form of her life right now..from 10.84 to 10.98 in two 100m races is good form

Lets hope she can keep on improving and as she says run sub 11s consistently and do it against the top girls. Im really proud of her!!! And of course Semoy proud of her too wish i could have seen the race- Ayanna who always runs well in Trinidad. Im esp. proud of Michelle- Lee ahye who brought her PB down to 11.32s, now she is a medal contender for the world juniors 100m. She just has to maintain and improve form. Her other challengers are jodie williams(UK- 11.24s) and ashton purvis(US-11.17s!!!!) who are running mad times right now. Kai has benefited from Auburn and she is in impressive form i hope she continues to improve- im so happy she ran that 11.41s. Had she come back for carifta things could have been different for Michelle. almost forgot about Octavious freeman who has run 11.16!

Congrats to Richard Thompson on winning the 100m national championship , well done , but one worrrying sign for me is after such good starts he seems to fade after 70meters , allowing the competition to close on him , It was the same thing as the race with Blake , Something that need to be looked at. I am totally impressed by keston bledman who in the last two natonal championship has been one of the quickest out of the blocks, it seems that he stayed longer in his blocks than normal but his ability to chase down thompson is what is making me smile , I believe that bledman will be ducking under 9.90 seconds this season.

Expected a faster time from Richard considering the times he ran in the past few weeks and the amount of tailwind, but I will take the win nonetheless. Very pleased to see Keston consistently in the 10.0's, normally a sign that sub-10 run is on the horizon. Added to that with his consistency he will bode well to get himself into "A" list races this summer.

Good to see Kelly-Ann running under 11s again. Will like to see her line-up next week at Pre. where the top female brass will be contesting the 100m.

I will put Sorrillo's time down to fatigue. Quow will need to come better than that if he really wants to be a consistent medal threat over 400m. Rather pedestrian run from Callender.

Richard was def the most in form sprinter in the men's sprint now,  bledman got out but came up early during his drive phase did well to come back but I felt RT won it comfortably. I would like to see him run some 200's though that killed Marc and Darrel he'll do well not to make the same mistake.
I was actually impressed with RT coming home in the 200m.
HE ain't there yet but he's def working towards it 20.37 aint bad but Mr Powell ran a 19.97 and well we all know what Mr Bolt does!
