Solid prelims start for T&T swimmers
« on: June 29, 2010, 09:44:48 AM »
Defending champions Trinidad and Tobago started their Caribbean Islands Swimming Championships (CISC) campaign with solid preliminary swims that set them up for some gold medal performances last night, the first night of the five-day competition in Havana, Cuba.

In the process, Joshua Mc Leod and Tyla Martin wrote their names into the CISC record books in the 50m butterfly events for the Boys 18 & over and Girls 11-12 respectively.

Mc Leod outpaced his competition to register a 24.90 second clocking that bettered the 25.26 previous mark, a performance that put him in the top-seeded lane four.

Martin, who was also the top qualifier in the Girls 11-12 200m Individual Medley (2:34.80) and the 100m backstroke (1:13.33), splashed to a 30.17 second effort for the one-lap event, improving on the previous 30.42 standard.

Jabari Baptiste, who like Martin was a high point trophy winner at the Carifta Games back in April, has a shot at being the most prolific individual medallist for this country on the night after qualfifying as the fastest seed in four events. Difficult getting results out of Cuba but so far we appear to be comfortably in the lead on medal count. We have had about 4 meet records and 3 national records so far in this meet. The team appears to be dominating.

On the polo side of things, the Under 18's won their opening match over the Netherlands Antilles easily while the U16's for the first time beat the Cubans. That was a huge acheivement. The u16 girls narrowly lost to Cuba in their game.
Success will never take you by surprise.

Max, we always looking at new meets to attend, and yuh boy now get his Canadian Veezay yesterday, so who knows...

We dominatiing the meet after 3 days and looking forward to repeating the victory of two years ago. I told the media last year post Carifta that this is the best all-round team we have had. Some disagreed with me, but with two Caribbean vicotries in a row, two Carfita vicotries in a row and second at CCCAN last year, I'd say this has the makings of a golden generation.

Hoping to keep it all the way through to seniors for a few of them well.
Success will never take you by surprise.

T&T retain CISC title
Story Created: Jul 3, 2010 at 11:31 PM ECT

(Story Updated: Jul 5, 2010 at 2:41 AM ECT )

Trinidad and Tobago's swimmers successfully defended their title Friday evening , the fifth and final night of the Caribbean Islands Swimming Championships (CISC) in Havana, Cuba.

Two gold medal relay swims in the last two events of the swimming competition at the Pan American Water Complex made certain that this country would lift the crown once more despite a sturdy challenge from the hosts.

And in water polo news, the Boys Under-16 squad defeated Cuba 11-9 to win the best of five series 3-1 and take the gold.

The final tally read: T&T 1,301 points to Cuba's 1,276, with Bahamas lagging way behind in third with 576.

The  highlight swim of the night was Joshua Romany's Boys 13-14 100m gold medal victory in the Boys 13-14 100m free (53.03) that not only smashed the CISC record of 54.14 but also eclipsed Nicholas Bovell's 2001 mark of 53.17.

His effort along with the rest of his teammates assured T&T of a fifth day medal haul of five gold, 13 silver and four bronze, which when added up to the previous four days gave a record medal total of 120 (51 gold, 42 silver and 27 bronze),  easily surpassing T&T's 2008 effort of 87 medals.

Romany also won the bronze in the Boys 13-14 100m backstroke (1:04.20).

Jabari Baptiste claimed the second gold for this country when he out-touched Aruba's Tyreke Wernet 26.57 to 26.62 in the Boys 11-12 50m freestyle and after he had claimed the bronze in the Boys 11-12 100m breaststroke (1:17.69).

Samantha Rahael secured the third gold with a 2:46.09 swim in the Girls 15-17 200m breaststroke before she combined with Cherelle Thompson, Kadeja Phillip and Makayla Armstrong in the Girls 15-17 4 x 100m free relay (4:08.39) for the first of two relay golds.

The other came via the Boys 15-17 4 x 100m free relay squad of Christian Homer, Abraham Mc Leod, Jonathan Cabral and Cadell Lyons (3:38.53).

In water polo action at the Ciudad Deportiva Complex, the Under-16 Boys were successful. However the national Under-19 male team , who had dominated the competition throughout the week, went under to the Netherlands Antilles 7-9 in the crucial final encounter to end up with silver. The Girls Under-16s were outplayed by Cuba 3-10 and gained silver by losing their best of five series 1-3
Success will never take you by surprise.

Other teams have individual stars doing it for them and our star didn't have a good 100 free. Expect that to change tomorrow with the men's 50 free, where George is head and shoulders above the competition. The only english speaking nation who doing well outside of having one major star is the Bahamas, whose women have been good since the last Olympic cycle. They just got 3rd in the medley relay and are favourites in the 4 x 100 freestyle. Added to that Alana Dillette, Ariana Vanderpool-Wallace and Alicia Lightbourne have all had great meets so far. Add in a young but promising Ariel Weech and they could be knocking on the door for a medal at Pan Am next year again.
Success will never take you by surprise.

Forgot the men's 4 x 100 was this morning as well. We were seeded second overall going into the meet and have qualified as the top team for the finals. This is the relay for which we have the most potential and continuity for the future. We will have a tough task to beat Venezuela tonight, but 4 solid legs gives us a silver. George qualified second in the 50 and Blondell is 8th. Those are the only finalists we have tonight.
Success will never take you by surprise.

The only person who was not rested was George. Everyone else was peaking for this meet. The only finalists came in the 50's of stroke, besides George who finalled in the 100. Other than Blondell and Thompson who finalled in the 50 frees, no one finalled in an olympic event. Non of the 50 fly, back or breast will be swum at London, nor Pan Am next year. The only swimmer at the meet who newly qualified for Commonwealth was Thompson in the women's 50 free. In short: we have nothing to be excited about after this meet other than the performance of the men's 4 x 100 freestyle relay. Just my opinion.
Success will never take you by surprise.

Correction, Samantha Rahael qualified for several finals in Olympic events and made commonwealth as well in the 200 IM. She was our most consistent swimmer after George.
Success will never take you by surprise.
