GOLDEN BOVELL
By Kern De Freitas
By Mark Pouchet

Trinidad and Tobago made up for Tuesday's slow day at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games, as George Bovell III secured gold in the 50 metre freestyle final, before helping the men's 4x100m freestyle team to silver.

T&T are also assured of at least a silver medal in squash, after the mixed doubles duo of Colin Ramasra and Kerrie Sample beat their Jamaican opponents 11-8, 8-11, 11-5 in the semi-finals to book a spot in the gold medal match.

Bovell, T&T's only swimming Olympic medallist, touched the wall in 22.23 seconds at the Complejo Acuático pool in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico to shatter the previous CAC Games mark of 22.55 posted by Puerto Rican Ricardo Busquets in El Salvador in 2002.

Venezuela's duo of Albert Subirates (22.78) and Roberto Gomez (23.09) had to settle for silver and bronze respectively. Bovell's teammate Caryle Blondell, who also made the 50 free final, was eighth and last in 23.63. Bovell earlier won heat four of the 50 free preliminaries in 23.11, while Blondell was fourth in that heat in 23.72 to qualify last for the final. T&T's 4x100m relay men qualified for the final with the fastest overall time of three minutes, 29.38 seconds to win heat one.

Speaking after the races, Bovell said the 50 free swim could have been better.

"It's good, it gives me confidence for the Commonwealth Games in October in India," Bovell told the Express last night. "But Although I swam great my start was poor. I was still taking marks when the starter fired and as you know, my start is my biggest asset and I had a terrible dive and I scrambled my stroke and only got into my cadence and rhythm and speed at about 20 metres. so there is room for improvement."

Bovell was still grateful for the time however. He said: "22.2, yeah it' feels good to improve on my time from the last CAC and to break the record. This is my fastest this year, 22.23. I am not tapered nor shaved so 22.23 is okay but I would have liked to have had a better dive. I feel I could have been faster."

Speaking about the relay, he said he was also very pleased.

"I knew we had a chance to get a medal. I gave the fellows a pep talk and they were very focused and swam for each other and the country . I was hoping to get a bronze but they swam so well that we got the silver so I am happy.

Today, Bovell swims the 50m backstroke where he has a chance of medalling again.

Elsewhere Kimberlee John-Williams failed to qualify for the women's 100m backstroke (heat four; 1:07.75) and women's 200m (heat two; 2:12.88) freestyle finals. Samantha Rahael was third in the latter heat, but finished one spot away from qualifying for the final.

Badminton action saw both Rahul Rampersad and Kerwyn Pantin fall at the round of 16 in men's singles play. Rampersad lost to Lino Munoz of Mexico, while Pantin managed to stretch his match against Pedro Yang to three sets before the Guatemalan prevailed 21-13, 18-21, 21-12.

T&T's basketball women ended the preliminary round on a good note with their first win of Group A, thrashing St Vincent and the Grenadines 75-24. Tiffany Williams led the way with 19 points, while Jowan Ortega (18), Chrisan Petrovanie (12) and Sharmion Selman (10) also got into double figures.

The win puts both T&T and the Vincentians into the playoffs for fifth to eighth places, after losses to the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Cyclist Phillip pedals to CAC gold

Nigel Simon

Njisane Phillip pedalled his way to T&T’s third gold of the 21st Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, yesterday. The T&T rider, however had to come from behind to win the Match Sprint final at the Ramey Cecader Velodrome. After losing out to Venezuela’s Hersony Canelon (10.865 seconds) in a very keenly contested first ride, Phillips of Siparia, who enjoyed a training stint at the UCI Training Centre, in Swizterland earlier this year, won the next two rides (11.650 and 11.835) to snatch gold, his first ever at this level.

The medal for Phillip, a triple gold medal winner at last year’s Pan Am Junior Championship in Mexico, was his second in two nights after he partnered with Christopher Sellier and Azikiwe Kellar for a Sprint Team bronze on Friday. His gold medal was also the third gold for T&T to add to swimmer George Bovell III (50 metres freestyle) and shooter, Roger Daniel’s (men’s 25m Standard Pistol) performances. Earlier on in the round-of-16, Phillip defeated El Salvador’s Eduarod Averlar in 11.630 seconds followed by a win over Dominican Republic’s Estanislao Lantigua in two straight rides, 11.614 seconds and 11.087 in. He then swept Colombian Cristian Tamayo in two straight rides (11.023 bsecs and 11.071) while Venezuela’s Hersony Canelon beat Barbadian, Barry Forde in similar fashion after the latter had ousted Kellar..Continue..http://guardian.co.tt/sports/other-sports/2010/07/25/cyclist-phillip-pedals-cac-gold-sport-lead

I surprise the rugby team did not medal. Hopefully the men and women hockey could sweep like last time. And maybe the women's football team may get a bronze. That will be fantastic!> And it still have the relays. But I am not too sure about our track. The men have not won a gold medal. we will see tomorrow.
