T&T U-17 women hold Brazil
T&T Express Reports.

Trinidad and Tobago's National Under-17 women footballers sent a signal that they intend to be no pushovers in the upcoming FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup when they gave a creditable showing in a 1-1 draw with Brazil's Under-17 team in Teresopolis yesterday.

In the first of two friendlies against the "Samba Girls" at the Brazil Football Federation National Training Centre, T&T got a late equaliser from substitute Anique Walker to earn a well-deserved draw and gain much-needed confidence ahead of the World Championship in Trinidad and Tobago in September.

According to head coach Even Pellerud, his team started the match well, applying relentless pressure which appeared to have surprised the Brazilians.

"Our team started in aggressive fashion by applying high and relentless pressure on the home team  and this seemed to surprise them a bit.

They made  judgement errors and technical mistakes that gave us a range of corner kicks and free kicks from dangerous zones and there were a number of chances to capitalise," Pellerud told Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) media officer Shaun Fuentes after the match.

Brazil stole the lead before half-time though after an error by goalkeeper Kerri Myers but T&T battled back and were rewarded for their persistence when substitute Brianna Ryce hustled into the penalty box and Walker was in the right place to hit the ball past the Brazilian goalkeeper for the equaliser.

"The ball possession was rather even, but we kept producing the clearer goal-scoring opportunities," Pellerud added.

"Playing against the wind in the second half helped the home team possess the ball for longer spells, and the match did not change until Brianna Ryce came in and gave our team much needed energy and attacking power.

"We certainly earned the tie, as we overall were the somewhat better team...in an otherwise well and even-played game.

"We have already identified some defensive issues that need to be addressed in the practice sessions leading up to the next game. We are not defending with superior confidence yet, so we know what we need to do to rectify this from here on," Pellerud concluded.

The teams will meet again at the same venue on Friday.

Trinidad and Tobago open the U-17 Women's World Cup against Chile on September 5 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, while Brazil face Republic of Ireland in their first match on September 6.

T&T line-up - 1.Keri Myers; 2.Camille Borneo (capt); 3.Lauren Schmidt; 4.Khadisha Debesette (Anique Walker 70th); 5.Jonelle Warrick; 6.Victoria Swift (Jasmine Sampson 65th); 7.Emma Abdul; 10.Liana Hinds; 8.Khadidra Debesette; 9.Kayla Taylor (Brianna Ryce 60th); 10.Nykosi Simmons.

T&T U-17s go down 7-1 in second friendly to Brazil
Published: 31 Jul 2010

T&T’s National Under-17 Women’s footballers will resume preparations for the Fifa Under 17 Women’s World Cup in Trinidad next week after falling in their second and final warm up with Brazil 7-1 in Teresopolis yesterday. The Even Pellerud coached team could not maintain the kind of form which saw them produce a creditable showing in last Sunday’s 1-1 draw with the Brazilians. Instead, the hosts also preparing for the upcoming Women’s World Cup were not prepared to let the visiting Caribbean girls get the better of them this time around. The host was rampant from the onset, rushing to a 3-0 lead before Brianna Ryce pulled a goal back for T&T going into the half time break.

The “Samba Girls” who were crowned champions of South America earlier this year, went on to score four unanswered goals in the second half. Pellerud, though disappointed with the scoreline, said that there was sufficient evidence from the tour to suggest that T&T were making progress ahead of their September 5, opener against Chile at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. “We know it was never going to be an easy second match and Brazil came at us from the word go. They made it difficult for our players especially in the first half but then we settled down and go a goal before the half time,” Pellerud said. Pellerud was not in charge of the team for Friday's game though, as he was out of town on a scouting assignment of the Chile National U-17 team which is T&T's opening match opponent.

Assistant coach Richard Hood was at the helm for the encounter. “But this type of challenge is exactly what we needed because it makes the players and the team on a whole realise that we are not quite there yet in terms of our readiness for the tournament and that we still have to keep on working hard as a team and ensure we never let our guards down. Overall I must admit I was pleased with the performance in the first game and while I would have preferred better scoreline in the second half, we will not leave Brazil feeling disgusted or disenchanted. There are a lot we can take away on a positive note from Brazil and now we will look forward to continuing our build up for September,” Pellerud added. Meantime, the 2010 Local Organising Committee in their continued efforts to bring the Women’s World Cup to local fans, will be present at the Gulf City Shopping Mall with the tournament’s Mascot “Trinity” and promotional giveaways from 11am this morning.

everyone keeps thinking Braqzil saved their best for the second game, did it ever occur to anyone that we did not  put our best out there the second game.

True. And our coach wasnt even there so maybe the assistant was experimenting , they can only get better. I still think we have a pretty good team

I believe we were an unknown entity to both the Koreans and the Brazillians and so surprised them both in the first games .Having seen us though , both teams were able to expose our weaknesses in both speed of play and tactical awareness . I have seen tapes of the korean tour and also witnessed our girls against local opposition, namely , our senior women . They play with a lot of heart , energy and aggression but can be a bit wild at times . I am sure they gave their best in the second game against the Brazillians but sometimes your best is not good enough if the opposition is better than you . The draw against Brazil was good for their confidence just as the 7-1 thrashing was important in showing up some of their weaknesses . Hopefully Pellerud and his assistant Richard Hood , will have them ready for Chile in September .
