Golden Jaguars and Soca Warriors set for September 26 showdown
Starbroek News

The matches between Guyana’s Golden Jaguars and Trinidad’s Soca Warriors and Guyana’s Under-20 and Trinidad’s Junior Warriors will take place at the Guyana National Stadium.

Yesterday, the Directors of the organization, Kashif Muhammad and Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major along with President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Colin Klass held a press briefing to inform the public what steps have been taken so far in putting together the event.

In Muhammad’s brief remarks he said that over the next few weeks their organization will be embarking on an ‘emotional journey’ to let the Guyanese public know who the players are that will be representing them.

“The GFF supports the venture they have come up with and I think this also is a way to see where Guyana is on the international stage. It will be a lot of work to complete in a short space of time in preparation but we will be ready since we are not prepared to lose at home,” said GFF president Colin Klass.

“I believe the way for our football to develop is having international exposure … to compete and derive the best possible team to represent us at a higher level,” he further said.

The competition, he said, was timely since Guyana’s football season has recently resumed and it will better help in the preparation for the upcoming Digicel Cup and other international competitions.

Klass also disclosed that they are working towards turning the September 26 event into a triple header and are awaiting confirmation from a Surinamese National Under-17 squad to oppose another junior Jags team.

The long-standing GFF president also said that a number of overseas-based Guyanese players will be arriving in Guyana to join the local players in the squad to represent their country.

They include Christopher Bourne, Walter Moore, Howard Newton, JP Rodrigues, Alinani Mounter, Shawn `Bubbly’ Beveney, Fabian Brown, Chris Nurse, Sean Cameron, Jake Newton, Ricky Shakes, Jason Lloyd,  Gregory Richardson and Gamaal Breedy.

What more is there for us to gain from these games?

There is absolutely nothing to gain from these games (unless from Guyana)...might as well play an A side vs B side, you will get more competition this way....

30 selected by GFF to train for T&T game
Kaieteur News

The Technical Committee of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) has named a 30-man squad of local players who will be joined by their overseas based counterparts to prepare for this month ends friendly international against Trinidad and Tobago’s Soca Warriors.

A number of the players were part of the ‘Golden Jaguars’ side which defeated hosts Suriname, French Guiana and the Netherlands Antilles last November to win the inaugural Suriname Independence Cup, defeating all three teams by 1-0 margins.

Quite a number of the players are young and will be relishing this opportunity to represent the ‘Golden Jaguars’ in what is anticipated to be an exciting battle.

Competition to make the final squad will be intense given the fact that a number of solid overseas based players will also be in the reckoning. They will begin arriving from September 19.

The local based players called are: Goalkeepers – Ronson Williams, Richie Richardson, Marvin Griffith and O’Neal Carter.

Defenders – Howard Lowe, Justin Collins, Sherman David, Selwyn Issacs, Kester Jacobs, Colin Nelson, Kris Comacho, Trevon Lytcott and Denver Dennis.

Midfielders – Philbert Moffatt, Llyton Ramsey, Glenorvan Edmonds, Delyon Josiah, Pierre Joseph, Dwayne Jacobs, Dwight Peters, Mustapha Haqq, Marlon Benjamin and Norvil Adrian.

Forwards – Devon Millington, Warren Gilkes, Clive Andries, Stephon Hope, Dwayne Ali, Anthony Abrams and Clive Nobrega.

Encampment will commence on Friday September 17.   Head Coach is Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover

Golden Jaguars squad to be trimmed today

Golden Jaguars squad to be trimmed today
By Kizan Brumell (Stabroek News)

Today the squad of over 25 local football players called to trials for the inaugural Kashif and Shanghai organized President’s Cup International Friendly match between the Golden Jaguars and Trinidad and Tobago’s Soca Warriors will be trimmed.

Yesterday, national coach Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover conducted the first day of a two-day trial at the Guyana National Service (GNS) ground.

Dover told Stabroek Sport that the two day trial was to ascertain the level of the local players so as to be able to prepare the correct structured programme when the team is encamped.

Yesterday, Dover conducted a beep test (which is an evaluation test to measure fitness) on the local players and said he felt that a number of the players were not up to the required fitness level.

“I was not entirely satisfied but some players showed a decent level of fitness but not that of an elite athlete,” he said.

With less than two weeks to go before “Judgment Day” at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, the Golden Jaguars seem to have their work cut out.

They are expected to be joined by a number of overseas-based players after Banks DIH Limited yesterday handed over a cheque to the Kashif and Shanghai organization to cover the players’ airfare.

According to Dover the players will have to endure double and triple sessions during their encampment to get as much work in as possible.

“No doubt that this is a pretty short time to prepare the team, but we just have to work with what we have and try our best.

“We are still optimistic for a top result, we’re not going to complain or make excuses, and we’re going to work out best to see what level we can achieve,” he said in response to a question from Stabroek Sport as to whether he felt that the time he had to prepare the team was adequate.

Dover also disclosed that it will be a challenge when the entire team comes together with the overseas-based players.

“Getting these players to work as a unit will definitely take some work during the four days they have to prepare as a unit.

“But we will be working on a lot of plays and will  practice by organization so as to familiarize the players with each other,” he said.
