UEFA bans vuvuzelas from European competition

Vuvuzelas have been kicked out of European competitions after UEFA said that the controversial plastic trumpets drowned out supporters and detracted from the emotion of the game.

The plastic horns became a hallmark of the World Cup in South Africa, producing a monotonous droning sound, often likened to a swarm of bees, which provided a backdrop for every match.

But they will not be allowed in stadiums in UEFA competitions such as the Champions League, Europa League and Euro 2012 qualifiers after UEFA’s ruling on Wednesday.

Premier League clubs ban vuvuzelas

Fans hoping to bring the distinctive drone of the vuvuzela back to England from the World Cup face disappointment after several Premier League clubs banned the trumpets from their stadiums.

Although the Premier League has not made any ruling on the vuvuzela covering its 20 teams, Tottenham banned the South African instrument late Monday.

Arsenal, Birmingham, Everton, Fulham, Liverpool, West Ham and Sunderland followed Tuesday, with most citing concern that the distinctive blaring of the vuvuzelas could prevent spectators at matches from hearing safety announcements such as evacuation instructions.

War on Vuvuzelas Begins in Europe, Coming to a Stadium Near You

Enough is enough, it seems. On Wednesday, UEFA put its collective foot down and outlawed the vuvuzela at its matches, and American soccer may be close behind.

The European ban won't cover individual leagues (several English Premier League teams have banned them already), but will extend to European Championship and qualifying matches, the Champions League and the Europa League.

"UEFA feels that the instrument's widespread use would not be appropriate in Europe, where a continuous loud background noise would be emphasised," the governing body said.

The horns were  annoying at first, but I got to like them towards the end of the WC.

South Africa could ban vuvuzelas

Vuvuzelas could be banned in South African football grounds unless Kaizer Chiefs fans improve their behaviour. At a recent cup game, supporters of the country's most popular club threw two vuvuzelas and a cabbage onto the pitch.

Chiefs have been handed a suspended fine of US$72,130, while their chairman was ordered to make a public apology. "Should vuvuzelas continue to be used as missiles they could be banned," the Premier Soccer League's prosecutor Zola Majavu said on Thursday.
