My question is this: If there is evidence year on year of corruption & bribery in FIFA, which is, I believe, a kind of private company, why doesn't governments demand the Swiss police to investigate, seize assets and imprison the culprits? FIFA is one of the most powerful global money making machines, yet they are a law unto themselves. An oil company couldn't get away with these things. This whole World Cup bidding is rife with bribery and corruption. But its no different really than tendering for a contract. Why doesn't FIFA appoint an independent tendering board to decide on who has the best bid? I know there is still options for corruption, but at least it would be scrutinised more closely.
The World Cup, like the Olympics, bring vast social and financial benefits to host nations, so much so that governments fund the bids. Surely a football body shouldn't be able to effect the future prosperity of democratic nations? Maybe the United Nations should collectively ban all FIFA sanctioned activities and form a new global governing body with each government controlling its local football. Would football be damaged if this was the case? At least these people could be voted out by the public, unlike Mr Blatter et al.
