Cagliari have been fined 25,000 euros (£22,000) over the racist chanting directed at Inter Milan striker Samuel Eto'o during Sunday's Serie A clash.

The match was temporarily stopped after only three minutes because of the level of abuse aimed at Eto'o.

The referee spoke to both captains while a stadium announcer warned fans that the game could be abandoned if the chanting continued.

The Cameroon striker went on to score the only goal in Inter's 1-0 victory.

Former Barcelona star Eto'o no longer takes his family to watch him play in Italy because of the racist chanting.

Meanwhile, AS Roma were fined 10,000 euros (£8,800) after a fan shone a laser into the eyes of an assistant referee during Saturday's 2-1 win over Genoa.

Why penalize the club unnecessarily?  Unless they were able to control the fans and didn't then the club isn't in any way complicit.  The fine reflects the balance between recognizing that the club can't really control the fans, and hoping that the club would still do more to discourage unwelcomed fan behavior.  You also send a message to the fans that they only end up hurting their own club by their behavior.

If we use England as the benchmark for tackling football racism in Europe, there is alot more that clubs can do to quell this behaviour. CCTV, dozens of match stewards annd phone hotlines are all used by English clubs on matchdays. And if you are caught for doing something racist, better believe you will be banned from the club for life. Result: in less than 25 years, racism has been virtually eradicated from Premiership stadiums. Racist supporters now know to keep their views to themselves.

If the fine were £1m, you can bet Italian clubs would be doing alot more than they are now.

While I agree that there is no complicity on the part of the club hitting them where it hurts the most, their pockets, is the first step towards dealing with the problem.
